Clean Cans In The Trash...

Hubby got me doing something a few months back and now I do it all the time. Rinsing out tin cans after emptying them. Say you open a can of soup, then you rinse the can out before throwing it away…even rinsing the lid. Now I do it all the time and it actually bothers me if I forget and I have to pull it back out of the trash and rinse it. I think it’s cleaner and the trash doesn’t smell.
Do you rinse your cans after emptying them? Why do you do it?

I do. I have a cat and a dog in the house and the cat will get in the trash and pull out the cans if I do not rinse them out before I throw them away. My Izzy will get them if they are things she really likes, but she waits until i take the bag out and am waiting on trash day lol

I always wash out cans ,once I even sliced my hand but know I use a scrubber brush. It stops the cats going through the rubbish and also stops the smell as well,we send ours of for recycling,so it makes it more pleasant for the men who collect it as well.xx

This is the first time that I can remember someone washing out tin cnas before throwing them away. I have no problem with doing that. It probably would lessen the smell of the trash in many instances, but when I throw out the old cat litter from the kitty box I do not think that washing the cans is going to help the smell a lot.

When I throw out used kitty litter I tie it really tight in a plastic bag so there is no smell.

Dear Albert,
Why do you throw out tin cans in the first place. Do you not have re-cycling?
I live in a large city in Canada and we have an extensive recycling program. However, over Easter I visited relatives who live in a tiny community where you even have to dispose of your own trash at the dump. I went with them and was totally astonished. The dump is adjacent to the re-cycling yard. There are rows of bins for glass, cans, plastic, paper, batteries and light bulbs. There is also an area where you can deposit re-usable furniture, pots and pans and dishes. I watched lots of people drive up and put the various items in the verious bins and only a tiny bag of actual garbage in the dump. This was so great!

I do rinse them out and it drives me crazy when the kids don't. Even though we take out the trash at least once a day if not more. I do it because there are some smells that I just can't stand. For instance English peas. My husband and girls love them, but just the smell nearly makes me ill. I have to make hubby brush his teeth immediately after eating them.

The only cans we rinse out are the aluminum cans so we can recycle them. The proceeds go to my parents to help them out. It's not much but added to what we give them every month, it all helps. But you are right, if all were rinsed out, the trash wouldn't stink as much. I'm too lazy or busy to do it. lol

hi,
I do not rinse like chickn noodle cans or anything like that BUT pop cans or juice cans anything of the sort I do because if you dont you will have an infestation of piss ants as well as red ants. I live in the middle of an darn ant colony. it sucks
I use grochery bags so that it doesnt take veary l;ong to fill up and it has to be taken out.. I cannot stand a stinky trash can, then it makes my house smell bad and I am really bad when it comes to that. if i smell just the littleisrt odor and know it comes from my trash I will

My husband is in charge of the kitchen now, and I don't know what he does. I just know that he's one heck of a good cook. I, on the other hand, am just not organized enough to do that. LOL I don't even like washing the dishes I'm going to use again, so I don't know why I'd take the time to wash something I'm going to toss in the trash.

Hi twoey,
I am doing that also to avoid some smell in the house. I started doing this when one day, I had bad odor all around the house due to unwashed can of corn beef!

Hello Sweet
jmo but why waste resources to rinse if the can will
go in the smelly trash anyway.
I do rinse mine because they go with the cans to be recycled
along with rinsing jars and bottles to be recycles.
Not meaning to offend anyone just my opinion.

I have always rinsed tins and things out before putting them in the recycling box, dont know why its just something I do. The thought of putting dirty things in the box just does not sit right with me at all and in fact I have often gone and fished things out to wash them when others have put them in dirty!

I only rinse them out if there is a bad smell that needs a bit of attention.

I've always rinsed out all food containers before tossing them into the trash or recycling bin. I have done this even as a child. Just common sense as leaving food etc in the cans can bring about mold etc.
HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

We recycle cans here so I rinse them out before I put them in the recycle bin.
I rinse out the plastic soda bottles as well.

No I don't do that..but it sounds like a good idea, it would keep your trash from getting smelly. I think I'll start doing it now..Thanks.

Hi twoey68. I have always rinsed out cans before throwing them out in the garbage for as long as I can remember. Not only does it cut down on the odours, but it also makes it less tempting for animals like mice or bugs to want to get in there, or even birds picking at the garbage. Sometimes I also swish a little javex around in them too to kill anything from forming because of old food. Also if the bag springs a hole, there will be nothing yucky to run out..
