Sports Minister MS Gill advised Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Harbhajan Singh to learn from their team-mate Sachin Tendulkar how to treat national awards with respect and said the batting maestro is a 'true gentleman'. "Last year I was so delighted to see Tendulkar attending the function to receive his award. What a gentleman he is," Gill said. Dhoni and Harbhajan came under severe criticism from Gill on Thursday for skipping the Padma Shri award function with the Sports Minister saying he would soon issue a circular to ensure that sportspersons treated national awards with utmost respect.

So why make a big issue if they skip the function. Maybe they had something impiortant to do. They were in South Africa preparing for the IPL and you cant expect them to fly to Delhi just for one night. Had the IPL been played in India and they were playing in a match that day, would they still be expected to attend the function?

Hmm, I think national award must be treated with some respect. It doesn't matter where they were atleast they have given a written application that they can't come before hand, which they didn't

If they wanted to make such a big fuss about it they could have asked MS Dhoni and Harbhajan Singh if they could attend. If they said they couldnt, they should have just cancelled their awards. This way everyone would be happy I guess

I am glad that you commented back. Keep commenting on responses as you get more penny for comments than a response. Well, I don't know the entire story but what you have said is correct. They could have asked them but do you think that "Padma Shree" should be given on our choice?

They should have attended those awards, or thee awards should have gone to the Olympic medal winners who have been deprived a lot for such recognitions. I say this because the general practice is that home ministry sends letters to all the recipients if they are willing to accept the award or not. Dhoni and Harbhajan would have agreed to accept the awards so there names figured in the list. Its shameful, Harbhajan treated the whole issue as a joke saying that next time he will be available two days in advance. Surprisingly there is no word from BCCI either.

Its shameful, Harbhajan treated the whole issue as a joke saying that next time he will be available two days in advance. I didn't know that before hand. It is the most ridiculous comment we can ever hear from any cricketer. I mean what example they are putting in front of the youths. Rashmie is right, Vijendra was more deserving candidate than Bhajji. I mean who have selected him as a candidate, he is a jerk!

They should be severely punished. For the moment they must be banned for any upgraded padma award like padma bhushan and Vibhushan in future. Vijender and Sushil deserved more than them. Harbhajan was also involved in sledging and slapping last year yet he was preferred over olympic medalist.

Tendulkar has that many records that itself is a record but from lot of fame and money his mind is not gone out like some other young ones. He is truly gentleman and very much professional person , we hardly see person like him in general.

That's why he is the only cricketer who got 'Padmavibhushan' till today. He deserves all accolades and honor. Though he is also too much professional but his commercial venture did not come into the way when the issue is something related to the nation.

I do believe that Sportspersons should respect the National Awards. However, this issue of Harbhajan and Dhoni not attending the function has been blown out of proportion by the media. As it is, the media did not get any spicy poll related story that day so they decided to make their bread and butter by singling out these two players. The players returned after two months from New Zealand on 8th april and then they had to leave for South africa on 12th, I suppose. Don't they deserve four days with their family??

Hello Rasmi, All you did was the quotation of Mr. Gill. Where is your opinion? Do you support Gill or Dhoni and Harbhajan Sing? Well this is a tight situation. When Tendulkar received the award he was not within hectic schedule and now Dhoni and Harbhajan after coming back from New Zealand were supposed to make it to South Africa and they really had no time. That they did not receive the award does not mean they have no respect for the nation. He and his Team stamped a history in the foreign land is not to be overlooked. And I am sure they must have communicated their difficulty in attending the ceremony and the concerned department also has to take things into consideration. Hill is an arrogant fellow I know. So this must have hurt his ego ridden self and came down to comment this way.

I think he is a true gentle man. He has more records than Dhoni or Bhajji. Still he showed respect to the national award.now they should have let the government know that they will be absent.

Sachin is a icon in world cricket, he is more popular for his simplicity and loyalty i have seen him talking so honestly a child. Our young cricketer should learn from him how to respect national award.

CIRCULAR!!!! As if they (the players) don't know about the importance of these awards already. They are a mockery of this democratic country. Except of awards given for bravery, both to civilians and defense services personnel, every other national award is a joke of its own type. None of the movies appreciated by the people in general receives those awards, lesser is the number of known artists who have those awards and whenever anybody is selected for them, there has been some kind of controversy.

Hey rashmie REally it is a very sorry state of affairs as Dhoni & Bhajji skipped their award ceremony function which is NATIONAL AWARD. The question of skipping or not attending the ceremony is not big factor but issue is this they have shown disrespect to their country's feeling . They have enough time to walk on fashion show ramp and dance on TV show but they have no time to attend or receive national award. I think by walking on ramp they will earn crores of rupees but to receive Padma awards they will not get any money. Hence the proverb which we are frequently using money money money sweeter than honey is proved by these two players. Govt should think about the same. No doubt Sachin is great player. Our sports minister righly told that Dhoni and bhajji should learn etiquette, gesture etc. Both of them do not deserve any award. pkc3000

Hello my friend rashmie JI, Aperantly,it may look as it is presented by media, but what MS Dhouni and Harbhajan Singh have to say, has never been hi-lighted by media. Was proper and confirmed 'first-hand-message' informed. Did tehy ever know about it. Was dicission taken for the ceremony, assuming that they would attend it. Till, this is not revealed, I reserve my comments. May God bless you and have a great time.

If you are honoured with National Awards, you must be there to receive it, whoever it may be. It is your duty to first an Indian then an Cricketer.

In this age of globalisation, these cricketers failed to understand that this award mean more than what it seem. In the warrant of precedence these awards have given place. Definitely it demands more.

May be Dhoni is a successful Indian Captain and Bhajji is a star hero. It's a shame on their part on not attending the India's most Prestigious Award ceremony. If DHONI and BHAJJI had to stay with their family, why not they skip few Matches in IPL? It's the money that matters them the most and not the Country. Shame on them.
