Should we celebrate the anniversaries of school shootings?

i know the Virginia tech just had their anniversary and now columbine is having their 10th year on the 20th.. seems to me that its disturbing in a way to always acknowledge it..
i mean the media covers it and everything and i know a lot of people want to honor the victims but i couldnt imagine being a student and having a day out of the year where we all thought about past students that had died in the same classroom as i was in etc.. not to mention it just gives more fame to the shooters that wanted a name for themselves in the first place..
so do you think its good for schools to remember every year the tragedy or do you think it could be bad for the students that are going there now? do you think that it might be giving the wrong attention to the event? i hope that there arent any twisted children/teens/students that see everyone remembering the event and some how making them want to reenact it to be famous! after all a lot of serial killers are after the fame in being the scary evil murderer on all the newspapers and everything!!
i guess its a catch 22.

An appropriate word would be commemorate perhaps. Yes, why not to remind us what evil can do when it comes. Also to show love & concern to one another. Sad experiences should not just be erased from our minds but it serves as a wake-up call to do something good in the future. We learn and we apply what we learn. A church ceremony is a good idea. Pray for the victims and support the families who lost their loved ones.

You know, I have never thought about it the way you put it, but you made some really good points.
I have always felt it good to have a "remembrance" of sorts on the aniversary of events such as school shootings, but now I think it should be handled in a more delicate manor, because of what you mention about copycats.
As I am writing this I am watching a show where instead of having a "memorial" every year, they are haveing a celebration of the victims life. Perhaps what should be done in these cases is to have a celabration of the victims life, and never EVER say a word about the perpatrator. In fact, other than the inititial story, the media should not use the perps names, they should just be refered to as the, "the perp!" That would start saying something to anyone who wants to commit a crime for the fame!

very true.. if they made the whole thing about the victims to where the only ones that are getting any attention are the victims it wouldnt give the shooters any indication that they would get any attention out of it since they were the bad guy

I don't think it's a matter of "celebrating," rather mourning. People think that it would be disrespectful to forget. People mourn in different ways. Sometimes people need to just move on and not dwell on the past, in other cases, people need to mourn and mark the day in which it happened.

I think it falls under, those who don't remember history are doomed to repeat it, kind of thing when they have ceremonies to remember tragic events like those school shootings. For those who survived the events, they can take time to acknowledge their pain and loss. For those of us who watched the events unfold, it gives us a reminder, maybe, to be a bit more aware.
