There are 2 things which worked when I had a cat: The first is to get some orange essential oil, and just spray a tiny bit of it over the areas where your cat scratches. Most cats hate the smell of orange oil and won't go near it. The other option is to tape sheets of tinfoil (aluminium foil) hanging loosely over the areas where the cat scratches. They will try to scratch the foil, but hate the noise it makes when they try. Soon they will learn to associate the orange smell and/or the tinfoil noise with those areas, and avoid them in future.

Hmmmm....
Pretty good suggestions. I guess they'll work with my cats as well.

My cats LOVE the smell of citrus to the point they tried to eat an air freshner I had ..... and they love tinfoil even more so ... I'm tellin ya they are crazy ... I find a squirt bottle works ok along with a loud no ... but it takes a loooooooooooooooooooooong time for them to learn ... I tried the Shoo stuff you can buy ... 2 different kinds and they love the smell.. I think it attracts them to stuff

Well as far as I've seen with my cats, it's pretty much impossible. They just scratch away at anything they like.
You can always try to shoo them away though.

I think there 's no way of stopping them fro scratching because they were created like that. Just enjoy having fun with them and you will gain their difference.
