Speaking in tongues is suppose to be a gift but in some churches they make it seems as if it is suppose to be a must. Members of their congregation fast and tarry to receive it. The bible says that when one is speaking in tongues it is to edify God and not man. It also says that there should be an interpreter but yet since of lately when you go to church the members are all doing this and there is no interpreter. Even the words that are speaking in tongues you can now hearing them in movies and more than one persons are saying the same thing. So what mystified me is that how can speaking in tongues is a message from God yet the same message can be use in a movie script. To my understand when you are speaking in tongue you the person not knowing the message that God is telling you and this is the reason he appoint a next person to interpret. You the interpreter don't even know what you are saying but the members of the congregation should be listening and obedient because it is a message from God. But as usual mankind always try its very best to turn what suppose to be a good and wonderful thing from God into something worst.

I myself am a memeber of the pentecostal church....We do speak in tongues, and it IS a gift from god.... You speak in tongues when you are filled with the holy spirit... And you see this in movies because of the stupid directors...in the movies it's not real and it's not right you should only use tongues to speak to god..and what they are doing isn;t right at all...it's not real TOngues are real there are people in my family that only know english, and one day in church they will be worshipping god and all of a sudden start speaking in tongues...they have never done this in thier life before....

To begin with the word tongues in the bible means language. God gave the disciples the gift of language and the ability to be understood by people of different languages coming together to be understood. They didn't have to study the languages of the people around them. They were given instant knowledge of those languages. Jesus tole them to go out and spread his word and if they had to learn new languages it would take some time Possibly years. My question is why would God need to have his people speak in something that no one understood.

I have not spoken in tongues but when I was younger I was invited to a church and some people soon broke out into tongues. It scared me at the time. I wasn't used to it though. The church I attended as a youth was a quiet church.

When I was younger and used to attend church, there were some people that spoke in tongues. Honestly, it frightened me alot. Even 20+ years later, it still disturbs me somewhat. To me it would seem that some churches make it everything but a requirement.. and I do not agree with this at all. I feel that if I wanted a word with God, I could have one in any language - silently or otherwise.

Speaking in tongues is psychological. I have no doubt that the early church, prior to A.D. 70 in the apostolic age spoke in tongues, but today it's pretty obvious that it is psychological. Anthropologists have shown that what is spoken is usually simply giberish.
