There are a lot of things that make Filipinos proud of their own land. But to every situation, there are pros and cons. Filipinos are known for their good traits, their hospitality, their happy-go-lucky attitude, etc. But like what I've said there is always a negative side. So what are these Filipino traits that you don't want and would like to change?
I dislike how the Filipinos spend their time blaming their problems at anouther person instead of thinking how it occured. Fail a subject, blame the teacher. Be broke, blame the government. We can easily find mistakes in others.

I hate how Filipinos like the imported products more than the products that came from our own country. Just because it came from the United States or whatever country it came from, it is always said to be better. Thats why we have so much pirated stuff here. Even though it is fake, as long as it has a brand name, it sells.

Totally. Someone told me that there are some products that are made in the P.I., then they are sent to another country, then that country sends it back here in the P.I. and sell it for much much more. Can you believe that?! They are selling us our products for a higher price!

Yah! I heard a thing like that going on. Some inventions are really made here in the Philippines then they will be sent abroad then back to us with their name on it as if it was made there. Sheesh. And we are allowing it. It's really nice to have someone to discuss this with. When I try to raise this issue with my friends they are all like "ok it's not the end of the world, some things are better to be left alone". Haha

Me too. Pinoy products are actually good. It's just that more are patronizing imported products because most believe that they have better quality. Let's try to look at Divisoria, items there are imported too but they seem to be less durable.

As what the other commenter said, some of these negative things are universal, maybe human instincts, like the blamings etc. Most of us heard or experienced from our kababayans from other country, is the dicipline we showed when in other countries, followed their laws and regulations like in traffic signs and others, which we don't usually follow here in our own. I hope we are disciplined here as we are in other countries, and the most common negative trait is the "crab mentality", that some are not happy if others succeed and try to pull them down.

Yeah, I agree. You see our police officers are not disciplined either. And so is our government =(.

When you ask a Filipino about the economic status today. They'll say that they really sense the crisis but you can still see most of them do the shopping wherein the items are not really the necessities. If they heard sale-discount on certain mall. They'll grab the items that doesn't really need to buy.

That is quite true, but I think compulsive buying is universal.

I want to change the "crab mentality" of most Filipinos.
It sickens me to no end. I mean, when someone manages to reach the top position, say in a company or the corporate ladder, someone is there waiting to stab him in the back and pull him down. Or when someone abroad is making waves because of their Pinoy talent... I hate it when other Pinoys would ridicule them and say bad things about them. I don't understand why most Filipinos do this. Can't we just be happy for the achievements of our fellow Filipinos?
Sheesh!

Filipino Time, I think if we are all puctual I think we are more productive. Like what happening here in our government offices or barangay. Yesterday we went to barangay to get the barangay clearance but the person in charge is not yet there even if it is office hour already. So we wait for another hour to be able to get the barangay clearance so we can apply for Postal ID in municipal office. I gets angry because of the delay, why our Capitan here didn't obligate himself and employees to work early.

Haha experienced the same thing. We were there so early, about 9am, then the person in charge is not yet there. Then we came back after an hour and a half, then he's now taking his coffee break. You cannot imagine how furious my mom was. Sheesh.

I agree to that. We Filipinos are known to be hospitable, like for example, most countries are prioritizing Filipino nurses because of the quality of care that they provide. Most Filipinos are like that, if they are in a different place or country, they tend to show more hospitality than what they show whenever when they are in their native country.
One more thing about us Filipinos is the "bahala na" and the "manana habit." I mean, why wait for another day or another week before we have to accomplish a thing if we can do it today right?

Totally. Another thing is that Filipinos are hardworking and patient especially those who work abroad.
I agree and even I am guilty of that sometimes haha.

I agree with you....I am like that also sometimes...I blame my husband whenever I am not in the great situation..LOL! ANyway, One thing for me is to stop putting others down....I love hanging out with "pinoy" but I am discouraged by this and there are also who are very hypocrite...

Don't be discouraged. Filipinos may be like this at times but they can be as sweet, loyal and caring as a friend.

Filipinos should lose their laziness and superstitious beliefs. Filipinos always choose the easy way around because of their laziness. This is the reason for graft and corruption and our backward economy. Filipinos blame this and that for their problems ALL out of laziness. Superstitions on the other hand slow us down and make us fatalistic.

The only negative traits and character if I may say that I really wanted to change in every Filipino especially those who are working in the government service is red tape. And why I really wanted to change this? Because I have been a great victim of this "thing". I have been applying in every government agencies here in our place, and only to think that somebody has already filled up the position that I am applying for. I just hope that it won't happened also to people who will read this...

Hey that happened to me too. But not while applying in a government agency. Mine was in a school. The trend today is "the more kakilala you have, the more life would be easy for you".

We have a LOT of that traits, like "BAHALA NA" , "Mamaya Na" etc. For those who don't know what "Bahala Na" means, its like instead of knowing what the out come will be, you'll just do it for the sake of finishing it. Like for example, an assignment that is not finished, Filipino students will still pass it and saying " Bahala na" Meaning even they pass an incomplete assignment they will still have a Grade rather than not passing anything. And " Mamaya Na" is like, "i'll do it later". We Filipinos have this kind of attitude, maybe majority. Even I still have this trait I believe. "Mamaya na" Instead of doing it now, I'll tend to do it later near the due date or pass it when Its almost over. These are just some of the traits I want to get rid off by Filipinos.
Just my 2 Cents.

the mentality of putting others down because they became financially and materially blessed.the "utang na loob sa magulang" syndrome-I don't see the point of asking financial support from working, adult children if parents can still work and earn their own money.

Well Filipinos have close family ties. I think it's ok if you give your parents part of your earnings. What I don't slightly approve of is that if the parents (and by this i mean those who are still capable of working and earning) will rely their whole life with their child. Thanks for posting my_name_is_coco =).

I am a proud Filipino and now that Im based abroad, I realized there are traits that we have that hinders our growth as a nation. Aside from those that were mentioned, the attitude of "ningas-kugon" for me, is just unacceptable if we want to be a strong nation. Everything starts with a dream and we, Filipinos, do not have any problem with that. We're all dreamers. But acting up on that dream, on that goal, sets us apart from the rest of the world. We could probably begin but we usually fail to deliver up to the end which makes it all worthless. If this was not a problem, we will not probably have unsolved crimes, unfinished infrastracture projects, ineffective houding projects. Inspite of it all, I believe we are a blessed country with outstanding traits that we could truly be proud of

Well said leilanism79. As I said before, we have what it takes to excel it's just that there are certain traits that pull us down.
Thanks for posting =)!

Well what can we do. Filipinos are Filipinos. Good thing that beside this trait is that we can easily find a good thing from it. A priest in our school (he's Australian) told us how amazed he was with how the Filipinos can pull out jokes in times of crisis.

Blaming others for own mistake is a universal trait. Not exclusively or rather distinctly Filipino.
Me, crab mentality is one thing I want to be changed. Why can't we just rejoice with others when they were able to improve their conditions in life? Why do we have to look for things that can pull down fellow Filipinos when it just take us less effort to smile and praise good deeds of our successful countrymen?
But even with lots of negative traits we have as Filipino's, I'm still proud to be one. I do hope that someday, somehow, the Filipinos will also be proud of me too.

There is also this reasoning that I don't like: "ok lang na bumagsak ako, marami naman kami eh". A lot of us are not motivated.
I am totally with you, despite these traits I'm still proud to be a Filipino. Thanks for posting and Goodluck =).

i totally agree with you. among the traits of the Filipinos, what i hate the most is the crab mentality. a lot of people always practice this attitude. they are never happy that someone is becoming prosperous, they oftentimes pull that person down. why can't these people be happy for others?

Yeah I agree with you there. I think the main reason behind why a lot of Filipinos are like this is that we belong to the third world country and have been experiencing life the hard way. Well it's just my opinion.
