Well, I'll be writing about how I went about preparing for this exam. I scored 690.
The GMAT has three sections viz, Quantitative, English And Analysis of an Issue and argument.
The quantitative section guages ones ability with regards to everyday Mathematics. For those of us in India the quant section will be a pleasant surprise in comparison to out CAT quant. The quant section tests basic math skills like percentages , averages and so on.
The Verbal section has redsing comprehension, critical reasoning and sentance correction. Now, this section is where most Indians falter.
One has to write two essays of about 400 words. In the analysis of an issue section, one needs to take a stand and give an opinion regarding the given topic. In analysis of a argument one needs to perform a dissection on the given argument and justify why the given argument is valid or invalid. One need not use complicated words to impress, but good grammar and clarity of thought matter.
The first thing to do is take a couple of sample tests. This should give you an idea about your stenghts and weaknesses. Once you have done this you need to divide your time between the three sections.
All three sections requires plain practice. The more GMAT style question you solve the better. Make sure not to neglect your strong section. Solve a few questions belonging to that question every day. This simply conditions your mind to answer these question in a quick time.
I would like to mention a few more things regarding the verbal section. I stongly recommend reading The Hindu. During the the run up to the exam I read some books which used good english and automatically my mind would analyse the sentences for their correctness. A good book to read would be one of Charles Dickens for he uses good english. Also, make a note of any new words you might come across and go through them often.
One can attemp a couple of analysis question a week. It will be helpful to find an english teacher to corret them. Some might need to work on their speed of typing here.
One should keep taking tests once in a while to gauge the progres. But, when about a month is left before the exam, it is advisable to increase the number of tests you take. Now is the time to begin to focus on time management. It is said that the first fifteen questions are the most crucial. The computer program decides your ballpark score during the first fifteen questions. Manage your time such that you spend more time on these questions. Do not leave any questions unaswered, there is severe penalty for this. Just click on any option if you must for the last couple of questions.
Though GMAT might seem easy to us Indians, remember it is equally easy for everyone else. The the percentile method determines your performance relative to how others have performed.
Finally, select five universities to send the scores to befor the exam. You will be asked to provide the names even before you start the test.
Let me know if you found this post useful and if there is anything else you need to know. I'll be glad to discuss question in English as that section is my strong section.
