Should we get returns for helping, and challenge our limits?

I am just curious about a theory of life. In our societies, we are all inter-dependent, hence teamwork is of great importance. But ultimately there has got to be someone leading, and someone following.
I generally like to help people, even if I am piled with loads of work, so it makes me quite popular and workload can increase quite steadily. My principle is that, if you get the benefit, you should pass it on to the others, and not ask for any returns. Most people around me though forces "a treat down my throat". So I am curious if I am doing the right thing or not. I know there is a need to appreciate other's gratitude towards you. But i thought benefitting more others was the best form of treat. Is there any wrong to it?
Many people think I am taking to much work, but I prefer to take it as a challenge for myself. Should I reduce workload or continue to take on more opportunities presented?
I would like to hear your opinions. thanks.
