Are you a good decision maker ?

It is really difficult for most people to be a good decision maker for any shortcoming in the process might create rather a problem. Hence there is a necessity to undergo a course on the related subject for the ones who really wish to be good decision maker. Self confidence, knowledge of the prevailing situation, concentration, self control, coolness, wit and mind and body language reading ability etc. are some of the virtues that are needed to become a good decision maker. A slight mistake by Napoleon Bonaparte was the defeat he saw in the form of the Waterloo War. One become s hero or a leader only on the strength of decision making. I still feel that there would be no Pakistan but one India had Nehru and Gandhi made a slight mistake and that is the history now. So I feel, before deciding on anything look ar the pros and cons of the issue and then have the go. what do you say? Pleas share. Rajib. 19.04.09

lol. To be straight, I am just a bad decision maker. As you said, being a good decision maker needs to be prepared from several aspects, like, self-confidence, knowledge of prevailing situation, ... wit... I think, as for myself, I don't have any of them. lol. But I don't think I am lack of confidence, it's just like, maybe I don't want to be a GOOD decision maker. Even we have checked the pros and cons of an issue, also good preparations like wits and so on, and the result may be out of our control. Everything can be out of our control sometimes. Never mind. Just go. When we make a bad one, we learn from it and perhaps we be the good decision maker. lol. Luck.

Hi, this is not that you are not a good decision maker. You haven't applied yurself to the fullest that is why you are saying so. Just sit a while and take decision without thinking the consequence and you would start making good decision. Thanks for sharing

Rajib- I think you bring up some interesting questions. I suppose that things perhaps may have been different if Nehru had not made the decision he did. Who knows. Perhaps it would have been more blood shed. Looking back on history is always in danger of either being too critical, or thinking that things would have been better if certain decisions had been made. We'll never know. All we can do in today, in the now is to learn from the past and try to live better. I know that I've made decisions that at the time I thought were sound, or for the best, only to find out later on those decisions were not the best for me. Beating ourselves up for our past mistakes is no way to live life. It keeps us wrapped in the past, and we then do not live in the present moment. Sure, make mind of those mistakes but once we do let them go. We will never be perfect, and we always make mistakes. However, our lives can still be well if we continue to focus on the thoughts that at this moment in time a particular decision is the best one I can make with the information I have, and I will not worry if it turns out differently. If and when it does in that moment, one can only say to their self that they did the best they could, be the moment, live through that moment, and move forward. Many blessings dear friend. Hi Anora, That is well said. It is just useless to brood over our past actions. What they did in the past and did a wrong thing now can not be undone. Better look at the moment and see if things are going steady. Nice say. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Can't agree with you more and believe me I look to do the same at most of the times. But at times when my wilder sides takes over, all these thoughts never strike. These things are called "thinking too much" at those times and when you think too much 'the moment' may pass away. At times preparing yourself that well eats up all the fun it has in facing things unprepared. Don't you think so?

Hi Raj, That is right. I agree with you that too much of thinking leads to inaction. So you have to be quick where it is necessary. Thanks for the response.

I agree with you that decision making is not an easy matter to handle. Even the lawmakers of every nation needs a dozen intellectual brains to make a concrete decision. Wrong decisions can wage a war as most troubled lands are experiencing now. The votes made the wrong choice of leaders. I may not always be right but I do decide for myself on many matters especially the running of my business.

Yes, this is the poor decision making that the nation suffers sometime. As for me those on the hot seat should consider this case very tactfully. So far in personal matters it is to some extent ok for we learn from our small mistakes. Thanks a lot zandi.

Hi there, What is a decision? It is a mere choice and mos of the time you have only two choices and you have to choose one! Based on your own experiences, you do give a thinking and choose an option. I won't say that I am a good decision maker. Most of my decisions went wrong and was penalized but with every experience I am learinng and next time I do make a good one!

Hello friend, I take all of my decisions myself and once I take a decision I do not regret it. I give a lot of thought to my decision so most of the times it comes out to be a good one. Even if I make a bad one, I try to look for ways to make amends rather than regret it.

Often for me, it really depends on the situation. I know there are many times that I might be faced with making a decision and if I think too fast it could come back to bite me in the end. So a lot of times I often find myself stopping and thinking about each choice I need to make, and will usually find myself spending some time in Prayer to help be able to make the Best decision for me as well.

One who makes decisions should definitely take the time to think of such results if ever he decides one out of the options that he or she can select. That person could also ask from others in regards to their opinions to weigh the odds and perhaps find a common ground for all choices that one can select. Its not always about easy though.

And with whatever happens after deciding on something, be it good or bad, that person should just stand with his decision and be unwavering to what he or she had made.

I have made some poor decisions in my life and suffered for them but I have learned from them so that I don't make the same mistake twice. If we always made good decisions we would never learn anything, so it's good to have a few errors in judgment!

Hi there! I always think things over before making any decisions. I try to foresee the future, the good and the bad if I decide on this and that. Sometimes I ask for advices cause' theirs could be better than mine. I have lots of confidence with my decisions too cause' I always know what I want. But I am not perfect a person cause not all my decisions are right. I have made wrong decisions in my life too and I don't blame anyone for these wrong decisions. But what's good is that I always try to learn from my mistakes and if I have taken the wrong the path, I try to change it to make my life better. Ciao!

Hello Rajib Decision making is a mental process which results in the selection of an outcome among various available alternatives. I am not a good decision maker because though I can see alternatives but to apply mental process is not always easy. Yes, there must be a course on decision making. In fact, Herbart Simon won the Nobel Prize for Economics in 1978 on his theory of decision making. According to him, the most sought after ability for a manager is his ability to take perfect decisions. Even in real life, we always face situations where we are bound to take decisions. I am here on mylot at 2 AM is my decision over sleeping or reading something. Here, a proper study may not come into picture but only commonsense and ability to think about own betterment will do the job. I think the attributes that you noted above are necessary but only those stuffs will not make a person good decision maker. In fact, no decision can be said to be perfect. We must remember the existence of bounded rationality. Then again, there is a dichotomy of values and facts. The inherent biasness also affects decision making process of a person. The task of rational decision making is to select the alternative that results in the more preferred set of all the possible consequences. This task can be divided into three required steps: (1) the identification and listing of all the alternatives; (2) the determination of all the consequences resulting from each of the alternatives; and (3) the comparison of the accuracy and efficiency of each of these sets of consequences. What was that fault of Napoleon? I don’t know..Please share that briefly. The creation of Pakistan is not a decision by Gandhi ji or Nehru ji. They were forced to follow. But they took a decision to oblige. Here comes the bounded rationality. There might happened more bloodbath if they did not go according to the wishes of Jinnah.

Hey, Rajib, Again you have written some logical powerful sentences. I wish, you were my teacher. The information on Napoleon is wonderful. I have just checked about Iqbal on wiki. It stretches credulity why a person who created the immortal song " Sare jahan se achha..." turned out be a communal. I never heard something like that about him. What I know about those tough years of 1946-1948, is from " India After Gandhi" by Ramachandra Guha. I will definitely go through the book that you have suggested. We will discuss about then.....Thanks a ton...

i am constantly having to make decisions for all kinds of reasons. for our business, for the our home finances, for my son, for the dog and on and on. so i am confident in my decision making abilities. i have to be because i really do not have anyone to defer to on most things because my husband works alot and is indifferent to most things. i am the one who really runs the household and most times, i would say 9 times out of 10 i make the right decisions.

I am good at making decisions, I just don't necessarily make good decisions. I always find it fascinating that the tiniest decision in your life can have enormous consequences. My great great grandfather came to Australia because he decided to tie his shoelace on the steps of an immigration office. If he'd waited or done it earlier, my family now would never have existed.

To be a good decision maker it is wise to analyse the situation, look at it from all angles, measure the risks and act; the idea is not too wait to long to take action because that's where hesitation steps in along with confusion. Some decisions will be for the best and others not so much, but if we never made mistakes we would never learn, so it is okay to err as long as we gather knowledge and move on without too much emphasis on the past lest we miss out on the gift of the present. As far as world leaders who make decisions there is much at stake for so many, it is indeed a daunting job and putting the questions to the people may narrow the choices. I usually take too long to decide and one of my lessons is to believe in myself more and to take appropriate action in reasonable time.

Hello Paula, Rest aside, what you pointed on the erring, this can bot be accepted in all situation. Okay, if you went shopping and had a bad bargain there is a room for rectification and one can improve the situation later. But if the decision is om a too serious matter? And he/she knows the decision taken at this moment would make things different. Thanks for responding.
