I got it before I went to the U.K. for my nephews wedding, and I've had it ever since. This is a nail fungus. A fungus that attacks my nails and then makes them get soft and split. I only have to look at them hard and my nails split. The fungus attacks the sides of the nails. I've been to doctor after doctor, swallowed numerous expensive pils and painted things on my nails for years wihtout success. Mnay thanks to jillhill for inspiring me for this post. Do you have a nail fungus or do you know any inexpensive or homemade remedy to get rid of it?

I have this problem on my feet. I have had Athlete's Foot since like 2000. I was not sure what it was when I was first diagnosed and did not know enough about this fungus to know that I needed to run to the doctor for relief right away. Now I am at the point where I am quite sure I will need surgery or a miracle to get rid of this thing. I am discussing this with my doctor at this time. I am not sure of what would work to clear up this type of thing, but I am certainly very tired of dealing with it.

Alright, whatever my doctor says about it, I will do a topic on it for everyone. I have tried a lot of different remedies. Some were prescription, some over the counter, and some were home remedies, but nothing has given me permenant or even lasting relief. As soon as I go for a little while without using the treatment, it comes right back. I believe that my doctor wants to refer me to a foot doctor who specializes. Which will be very good for me.

I thought I had it, turned out it was Psoriasis under the nails. If you have peeling skin underneath the nail, maybe it isn't fungus. If it is fungus, the pills are nastier than the condition...

Hey cythiann! I have nail fungus too! I have no idea how I got it, but I can't get rid of it either! Now I have them on my toes first! They are really bad! The nail gets thick, turns green and hurts. Now that I have had for many years. But, about a year ago my finger nails started to break and split! I always had beautiful and strong finger nails! I have no idea what happened. They get white on the top and start to split! They just won't grow anymore! So I think it is some sort of fungus too! Not like my toes, thank goodness. I have tried all kinds of nail polish growing stuff. Never tried pills! I also don't know what to do! I am still researching! I told my doctor about it, but he had no answers either! I take a multi vitamin!

No I don't wear rubber gloves and to be hoinest, I don't do much cleaning. I work such long hours that I have someone who comes to the house one day a week to do a deep clean and then the lady who looks after the twins does a daily surface clean but also deep cleans the twins' bathroom/bedroom each day as well as their washing and ironing (if any). I live in the third world and it cost me about US$12 for a days' work. This is worth it to me as I also have a part time job and also make gift baskets if I can get orders. I'm hoping that someone will come up with something. Many thanks

Try this, soak and clean your feet and toes really well with a natural soap, like oatmeal soap, then after your toe's and feet are clean soak a few cotton ball's in apple cider vinegar and clean between the toes, feet and infected fungus area, then apply some tea tree oil ( mixed with a base oil)to a cotton ball and let it soak into the fungus area's then after you finished slip on a pair of clean white socks and wear them to bed or around the house. Tea tree oil is a antifungual natural antiseptic and it's even strong enough to get rid of ringworm's . I have eczema and it even helps relieve my skin break outs. My brother had athletes food and used it on his feet and he got rid of his athletes food using tea tree oil. Tea tree is also known as a natural remedy to rid the nail's of fungus. Tea tree is a strong essential oil that's highly concentrated and it's best that you use a base oil like almond oil or olive oil to mix tea tree oil into, drop 2-3 drops of tea tree oil to 1-2 table spoons of base oil before you apply it to the skin or nails..Tea tree oil has never let me down..Good Luck!

I am a very strong believer in home remedies for many things. This is one of those things because it seems that most nail fungus does not respond well to traditional remedies. There are many possible things you could do, but I've included the three that friends of mine have used before and had the best results with. Apple cider vinegar (ACV) Soak the affected nails for 15 minutes a day in a basin containing 2 quarts of warm water, 1 cup of apple cider vinegar, and 10 drops of lavender essential oil. The ACV restores the proper pH balance to the skin, making it more resistant to fungal infections. The lavender has antimicrobial properties. Dry the area thoroughly using a towel followed by a hair dryer set to warm. Follow up with tea tree oil. You can also make a mixture of equal parts of tea tree oil and lavender and dab this on the nail. This is the one that seems to work the best however it may take about 6 - 8 weeks of consisitence with it before you will see your condition cleared up. Grapefruit seed extract This extract is a powerful all-around antimicrobial product and is an excellent disinfectant. Make a solution of 100 drops in two ounces of water and apply to the affected areas with a cotton ball two or three times a day. Tea tree oil Tea tree oil is a natural antibiotic. Tea tree oil contains antiseptic and anti-fungal compounds that are a very effective skin disinfectant. Apply the oil on the affected area two or three times a day until the new nail has completely grown out. This can mean about 6 months for fingernails and up to 12 months for toenails. Make sure the product label says it is 100% pure tea tree oil.

I really appreciate your response with such detailed information. I am going to try this and yes, most things are not cured overnight but we now live in an age where we expect instant results. This is part of our problem. Many thanks again - I will get the ingredients and try it.

Hi ya cynthiann I hope all is well with you!! You poor thing, I can't imagine having this sort of problem for such a long time, I guess you have kinda got used to it and bared with it!! Is there a chinese herbalist near you? I had a friend who had a skin problem and had tried all sorts of things, like you, and nothing worked. She went to see the local chinese herbalist and got some very expensive stuff from them to drink but was also given some advice on what foods to avoid. It sure did work and she was so grateful!

Yes, I got used to it - but it is so ugly. I never wear polish on my nails - just hardener- as I do not want to draw attention to them. We do have aChinese community and soem of my Chines/Jamaican friends do indulge in Chinese remedies so I am going to ask them. Many thanks for giving me the idea
