Starting college next year..and have no idea what the heck to major in. I took an accounting class in high school and found it easy and simple. Will I be able to get a good job in that field?

I am now a freshman in a university here in our country and my course is accountancy. I must say... it is pretty difficult but it will be easy if we will work hard to understand its basics. I hope I will survive this course and graduate without any failures. I also hope I will pass the CPA Board Examination when the time comes.

Accounting can be a tough major, depending on the program you get into, and the kind of accounting you want to do, but it's a great career. It is fairly stable and you can earn a decent living, while also having the flexibility you want once you've established yourself with a client base. If I were you, I'd give it a shot, but don't rule out other options of majors or careers that you could be passionate about. Good luck!

If you decide on accounting, you have to have met all your math requirements(algebra, calculus, trigonometry, etc.). I took bookkeeping in my senior year of high school (1959-60), liked it very much, and thought I could become an accountant. When I told my counselor in college that I wanted to major in accounting, I was told that I had to meet all the high school math requirements before I could be considered for accounting in college. To make a long story short, I switched my major to Spanish and wound up immigrating to Mexico City in 1966 where I became a teacher of English as a second/foreign language, and have done quite well and eventually taught at the foreign language center of Mexico's National University. On March 1, 1989, I started a new assignment as private English Teacher and assistant translator at Arthur Andersen - Mexico. I had stumbled into the big leagues of accounting. I quickly became absorbed by Spanish to English translations of all types of documents generated by accounting firms (management letters, financial statements, tax inquiries including transfer pricing studies, SOX internal control projects, etc.), and have built up a clientele of CPA firms. It has also entailed learning accounting in both English and Spanish. Also, a clientele of CPA firms and specializing in accounting, et al has provided me with a very stable, steady flow of work. On top of that, the copyright of a bilingual dictionary I have compiled of specialized accounting, finance, and tax terminology will soon be released with nearly 6,000 terms. Bottom line - make sure that you have met all the high school math requirements. Best of luck
