American's often accuse Canadian of overuse of the word eh. Well this might be true, but while we sometimes use the word tossed on to the end of every sentence to confuse non Canadian listeners there really are rules to how to correctly use the word eh. The word eh is a question unto itself, but does not necessarily require a question mark when written, depending on how its used it can mean many things, but the most common meaning is "are you listening you jack a$$" as in "the light is red eh!" This usage is unique to Canada, we are the only ones who really use eh in this manner. Many other cultures use eh as a means of requesting a response, as in "nice weather eh?", although only in Canada is this the ONLY way to request a response. Really these are the only two proper uses of the word, luckily, due to the nature of the word, this means that you can really throw it into any sentence with ease and still be correct eh.

From one Canadian to another, let me just say that you have done a perfect job of defining the word Eh and outlining how it should be properly used. Eh? and Eh! could very well be the shortest sentence and shortest question in the English language. Thanks for the wonderful post.
