This story is very upsetting. It is hard to believe that our hospital policies are so bad.
A man was going to a meeting and passing a hospital seen an unconscious man in a hospital gown laying on the ground. about 10 feet from the ER. entrance. He then went into the emergency and reported what he had seen.
The staff then picked up the phone and called 911 for an ambulance. When the man asked why someone there didn't go out to this man instead of just looking out they said that the hospital policies prevented them from attending to patients found on the grounds.
Meanwhile it took about 5 minutes for the ambulance to get there and the cost for the ambulance was around $300.00.
Am I alone in thinking that these policies are crazy and need to be changed

It’s very sad but at the same time you have to remember someone somewhere likely sued a hospital over something relating to this and "ruined it for the rest of us." Plus, if the individual is unconscious that also makes it hard for them to know the individuals health issues or allergies. I'm not saying it's acceptable for them to just leave the individual laying outside but can you imagine if a doctor or a nurse began working on someone with HIV or gave medication to someone who was allergic to penicillin.

I agree with you. That is just crazy! It must have been obvious that he was a patient who had gone outside for some reason and had passed out. Maybe he went out to smoke and fell. I would have gone back out there myself and tried to get him inside if it was cold.
