Big Brother to Seize Control of the Internet!

For all those who had issue with the Patriot Act, prepare to be severely pissed off, our "Dear Leader" is poised to take full control of the internet and new legislation is in the works to give the president the authority to SHUT DOWN THE ENTIRE INTERNET if he sees fit to do so!
They realized that we no longer rely on the incompetent press to get our information and are increasingly seeking the truth for ourselves through the internet, and it must be stopped! God forbid anyone point out that the emperor is naked!
Orwell may have been off by 25 years in his predictions, but they are being fulfilled now without a doubt.

To 0bama and his followers we are naught but mindless children whose opinions are harmful to ourselves and others. Thus, the tryant wannabes see it as doing us a favor to prevent us from freely exchanging ideas which weaken the nation. Seriously, this is how the 0bamanaunts see us and justify their unconstitutional and evil attempt to destroy the first amendment.
How could the nation put their faith and confidence in such an arrogant, effete, know-it-all?

Then hopefully, this internet grab is 0bama's "Bridge too far" that causes his whole scheme to fail.

I don't know, Red. I mean, I know they are all eager for their handout form Dear Leader, but I think even THEY would be pissed if they knew that they'll lose the power to say what they want on the internet, and lose access to the entire internet all together! This will not just hurt Americans, but the entire WORLD, since their internet would get shut down too. So the stupid rest of the world who wanted this tyrant to run America will also feel the sting of supporting a dictator.

Can anyone give me a REAL reason why the president would need to have this power? I can't think of one. IT should not be in HIS power to shut down the internet. In fact it should nto be in ANYONE's power to do it.

I read about this when it was still in committee and started writing everyone. Little good it did.
If this goes through. I am closing my checking account, because the banks use the net for everything. I will stop all billpay accounts and go to money orders and snail mail. I will accept emails but will not answer any. I will once again use snail mail. If enough people do that we may save the USMail Service.lol
Oh Yeah, I will close my account with the Lot and with Pay Pal!!! The only thing I will use the internet for is to read the news and look things up so I guess I can get rid of High Speed and save some money.

This admin is so controlling, it is not surprising. We are turning into China. Soon they'll be dictating how many children we can have in order for the economy to turn around and our children to receive better education. It's getting crazy. I can't believe how many Americans just turn a blind eye to all of this.

Nope, this is bs and I was very disappointed to see that one of the co-sponsors, Bill Nelson, is one of my state's senators. I guess it's time to start emailing (while I still can), calling and writing to the good senator to let him know how I feel about this.

I knew he was going to try something like this. He's spineless and insecure and it drives him crazy knowing that not everyone likes him.
They will claim it's for our own good as usual but as we all know, the good of this country now depends of us being able to communicate thought the internet especially since he has control of almost all the television stations and news papers.

Not only will this affect Americans but people all over the world. Suddenly, if 0bama decides that it's a good idea, he can take the internet away from EVERYONE in the entire world. People complain all the time about America meddling in foreign affairs, how will they feel when the guy THEY wanted to lead our country starts taking away THEIR right to use the internet?

Hi Ladyluna, I finished it and it was quite eye opening.. I went around for a few days seeing the world through it.. Then heard of a bill in my own state that says if someone is injured and you are even 1% involved (like it occurs in your place of business) you can be sued for hundreds of thousands.. Business owners (especially small ones) have written saying they would not be able to buy insurance which would put them out of business.. it so eerily rings a bell, especially as it's the governor's bill as payback (favor) for the lawyers campaign support.. If we keep it up we will have a total system of favors.. and most of us don't have favors (or lobbyists)!
- You know, I think I'll have to read it again too, down the road a ways..

Hello Flowerchilde,
I was hoping to run into you. How is "Atlas" coming along? After your post about starting it, I decided to re-read it again -- it'd been a while. I'm just a little passed the charter run of the John Galt line. It's hard to imagine that I'm as enthralled as I was the first time, nearly 30 years ago!

What I do for a living depends on the Internet, and without the Internet the company that I work for would go under, just that simple. The Internet is the last refuge for freedom of speech, where if we want to speak our minds about or government, without getting a permit, we can! No, government cannot gain control over the Internet. We, the common citizen, has no voice in the media. We do not have enough money to start our own TV or Radio network. We do have talk radio but that will soon be gone, so where do we voice our opinions, the Internet. We else can someone like you and me write down our own thought and opinions so the whole world can read them?

Hello Kitty,
I only have a moment ... so I'll have to come back to this discussion.
Before I run, the quick point that I'd like to make is that the creation of the DHS was supposed to be the be all & end all of national security coordination.
Why is yet another czar being proposed? Are we to believe that DHS doesn't have anyone coordinating internet security protocols with DOD, NSA & FBI? Or that the authority to hard reboot the national sub-transfer stations doesn't already exist? Hogwash! We know that the authority exists because of the Opus32 worm that wreaked havok on the WWW back in 2003 or 2004 (it may have even been 2002)----where all of the nation's sub-transfer stations had to be hard rebooted.

Hello Kitty,
OK, I've done a tad more reading on this, and alas it is much worse than I had originally thought.
The Cybersecurity Act of 2009: In addition to the 'executive branch in control' horror story plot, the section authorizing the Commerce Department as the clearinghouse for all "vital" information is wayyyyy toooooooo Orwellian for my tastes. The Commerce Department??? The very department empowered to nullify State Sovereignty??? Why the heck do we have a DOD, DHS, FBI, NSA, and whatever other anacronym departments are funded with the task of securing the nation???
"The Cybersecurity Act of 2009 (PDF) gives the president the ability to “declare a cybersecurity emergency” and shut down or limit Internet traffic in any “critical” information network “in the interest of national security.” The bill does not define a critical information network or a cybersecurity emergency. That definition would be left to the president."
SEC. 14. PUBLIC–PRIVATE CLEARINGHOUSE.
(a) DESIGNATION.—The Department of Commerce shall serve as the clearinghouse of cybersecurity threat and vulnerability information to Federal government and private sector owned critical infrastructure information systems and networks.
(b) FUNCTIONS.—The Secretary of Commerce—
(1) shall have access to all relevant data concerning such networks without regard to any provision of law, regulation, rule, or policy restricting such access; …
Section 14 may be a bigger problem. It essentially revokes all privacy safeguards on Internet use for all networks. The Fourth Amendment would go straight out the window with the explicit inclusion of “private sector owned critical infrastructure information systems and networks.” While Section 18 limits jurisdiction to federal networks, Section 14 allows the government to go after private networks without search warrants. The section also doesn’t limit the jurisdiction to acute attacks, either. That jurisdiction exists at all times."

This is a VERY BIG problem, folks! I believe this subversive power grab by the Obama administration is but another line being drawn in the sand.
IF PEOPLE GRIPED ABOUT COMPUTERS MONITORING AMERICAN/INTN'L COMMUNICATION FOR KEY WORDS (Patriot Act), then those same people OUGHT TO BE CAMPING OUT ON THEIR ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES DOORS OVER THIS FASCIST USURPATION!
That the sponsors of this bill included provisions to override the 4th amendment("... without regard to any provision of law, regulation, rule, or policy restricting such access;") ought to be enough to land them in a jail cell, though certainly enough to get them booted out of office. Folks, if you know anyone in Maine, (Olympia Snow), West Virginia (Jay Rockafeller), or Florida (Bill Nelson) please urge them to begin spreading the word that swine who flagrantly violate our laws should be swept from office without impunity!!!
I would urge all to read the link below. It is an intriguing expose of the implications of this legislations. To tempt the disinterested ... here is the openning line:
"When Mother Jones and Jules Crittenden agree, isn’t that a sign of the apocalypse? Both take a hard look at the Cybersecurity Act of 2009 ... "

Hi Lady,
Thank you for stopping by, I look forward to your return! I agree with you that we already (or SHOULD already) have government agents in existence to handle cyber threats to our national security so handing 0bama full control over the internet is not only insane, but unnecessary.

As mentioned in the fox news piece and which is obvious to everybody, the Internet is a world wide network. Exactly how are they proposing to "control" it with this legislation? Is this yet another case of the US government planning to impose domestic US laws on companies which are not under it's jusisdiction?
I'll be following this story with great interest. It's something that will affect anyone in the world. Not just you people in the USA.

You're right, this will affect EVERYONE, not just Americans and it should be vociferously opposed by ALL who value the freedom of speech that the internet allows or even just people who like having internet period.

If people start protesting this, you can DEFINITELY count on my support! If possible, I will go protesting with them. This just is far FAR from being right. I just took a look at the articles you posted and I'm so mad right now it's not funny. No one should have that kind of power over the internet. Even if it doesn't change much, you can count on the fact of me emailing Obama and my senators (especially if my senators are in support of this horrible idea). This bill HAS to be stopped. I'm scared for the freedoms of the US.

Why doesn't this surprise me? Even before he was elected, he was already getting bad press. And like you said, since many of us rely on the internet to get our news, most of us found out about his voting record, past history and his religious affiliation through the internet. Seems fitting that he'd want to control how much we know about him. If he doesn't like one news site, he can shut that down. If he doesn't know about another site, then might as well shut it down, too.
This is all going towards a socialistic state where we have to ask permission to eat, sleep and breathe. We're all going to be working 20+ hours a day to support ourselves and if he thinks this will solve the crisis we have right now, keep waiting until he gets full control over everything from the internet to our phone lines to our grocery stores.
I'm terrified of this man and how he plans on controlling us all. I can't believe the American public was so stupid to elect this communistic asspole to office like they did.

That is why we all need to inform ourselves and speak out WHILE WE STILL CAN! This is BEYOND socialism, it is flat out fascist communism!
I notice there is not a single 0bama fan daring to post here and support this insanity or the people behind it. They also are not speaking out against it, because they probably don't want to admit that they backed the wrong guy. I wonder how they'll feel when THEY have no internet access and lose their right to free speech as well? Will they even care, as long as they still get their government handout?

I have been following this for while now.
It ties right in with the Fairness Doctrine, and it only purpose is to control what is said and viewed on the internet.
It is all about controlling the free exchange of information and ideas, just as the Fairness Doctrine and any regulations related to it are.
The premise and excuse being used in nothing less than fear mongering.
While internet attacks are an issue, most of us know how to fend them off in our own computers. The best way to defend against attacks is with the end user, whether it be everyday people or government and business entities.
Maybe if those government computers where more secure, then this would not be an issue.
If that were the case however, then the government would not be able to use this method as an excuse to control what we say and what we read.
This is nothing less than another in a long series of attacks on our rights and liberty.

Hi Angry Kitty!
I'd like to see them try... there's seriously no effective way to shut down the net other than a massive virus crippling hardware so it has to be shut down if the go ahead it will lead to a cyber war( i know I'm being alarmist but any conflict escalates) which will target large corporations, govt databases etc. In the UK were used to 'big brother' tactics, info databases(that are so unsecure its a joke) net profiling, CCTV,. The act by the sounds of it, is an excuse to introduce dictatorship by stealth. The patriot act has allowed the US govt departments to behave in any way they see fit. Unfortunately Kitty they've been monitoring communications since the 50's. I think the net is the last frontier for rebellion against any govt. the thing is that every sophisticated hacker who is caught gets the option - 120 years in jail or work for us.
