I can not drink soda as it burns my throat. I mean it literally makes my throat feel like it is on fire. I think it is because I have reflux, but who knows as I am not a doctor. I have never been able to drink it, I have tried several times since I was a little kid. I can drink soda mixed with something else but not by itself. I can drink non carbonated stuff and juice. Sometimes I can drink Sprite and Sierra Mist. So how many of you drink soda and if so do you have a loyal brand? How long have you been drinking soda? I think that soda is kinda addictive, so what are you guys thoughts on this?

Hello Effusive,
Hm! Now that is a shame, but I know where you're coming from. My dad too hated drinking soda because of the fizzy feeling that would feel like it was burning his throat.
I myself enjoy flat soda, as that's very relaxing and generally reveals more flavor in the soda. Coca-Cola is a great example of such.
Coca-Cola, as bad as it normally tastes (or maybe for you with the carbonation), is tolerable when it's flat. I enjoy it both ways, but it's particularly tasty and sweet flat.
Sierra Mist is good, as is Sprite- that's interesting that you can sometimes drink Sprite/Sierra. Maybe that particular brand is a little kinder on the throat.
Soda is kind of addictive, but only if you don't know how to stop. Plus if you see the dental effects (e.g., rotting of teeth *cough* *cough* Coke), it'll make you stop. :D
Vault is pretty good though- very addictive as it has plenty of caffeine in it, and probably more than coffee/Coke. I had a sample of it when I lived in California. When I was younger, I had to clean my room. I took a sip of Vault, and did it in 5 minutes. A 45 minute job (as my room really was a mess) done in 1/9 of the time.
Hah- now that's what you call a light-weight! :D
You might want to ask a doctor about it, though, as it MIGHT (and I say that very tentatively) be something else, but I'm not a doctor either, so don't rely upon me.
Thanks for starting this discussion!

That is the only way that I can drink soda is if it is flat. Coke is to sweet to me flt so I stay away from it. Coke is the worst, have you seen what it can do to your insides?
I have never tried Vault but I have heard about it. Yeah I already saw the doctor and he said it is my Reflux that makes it feel like I will explode any minute now.
Caffeine is no good for you either so I try to stay away from it. I used to drink a lot of coffee as it taste so good but that did not work for my stomach either. It started changing the color of my teeth as well. That was not gonna work so I just stopped drinking it.
These things will not make people stop as you can see from the responses in this discussion that some people stomach hurt and they still drink it. Soda is very addictive, but as you said you just need to know how to stop it. I can only hope for their health that they will drop the consummation of soda so frequently.

Soda is bad for you, in more than one way. One should.. Limit themselves on drinking it, or refrain from it completely. But, otherwise.. I drink Soda. On occassion. Maybe a 2 litre or two per week.
The only time I drink Soda out of the 2 litre frame, is when out eating at a restraurant, or on a rather long trip. Even then I don't drink all that much. Maybe a glass or so.
Acid reflux is sometimes caused by the acidity in the Soda, and isn't recommended for those who already have it. There are Acidity charts for Soda, which tells you which are the worst for you. Granted, most of them are pretty bad, but some are worse than others. Maybe you should find one of these charts.
Oh, and as for what I actually drink? Usually Diet Pepsi. Rarely anything else, unless my friend offers me a drink of Soda.

Lol.. It's nearly impossible to find somebody on the internet who has never drank a soda. Obviously those on the internet aren't exactly 'poverish'. Anyone who has eaten out has most likely had a soda. Most any restraurant serves Soda. So yeah.. It would be really hard unless somebody was allergic or had specific problems preventing them from having any. Even then.. There are ways to get around that.

In the past I drank a lot of soda and I found it was better than plain water. I realize it is a bad habit since I grow up. Today I seldom drink soda water. I drink more plain water instead. Besides, I have to be a good example to my son, and I will try to avoid soda water.

That is very good that you try to avoid soda. We have to set good examples for our children as soda is the worst for them. If you never give it to them then they will never know what they are missing though. Water quenches your thirst way better than soda also.

I love soda! In fact, I'm drinking soda right now! I try not to drink too much soda because it's not good for you at all, but it's so delicious! I have to try really hard not to constantly drink soda all the time! I like all kinds of soda, but I mostly drink diet. I don't really have any brand preferences. It's all yummy to me!

I am glad that all soda is yummy to you. No special preferences here, they all get drunk by you at one time or another. I am glad that you enjoy soda so much as just the way that you talk about it. You are absolutely right about soda not being good for you, but I always say I thing that to much of anything except God can not be to good for you. I tried diet and it did not burn my throat as much but it was horribly sweet, to sweet for me. Thanks for your response.

Hmmm, it does have that sort of warm feeling after you drink soda...Well for me, i don't take soda that well either becuase of the amount of gas it has..I mean how can people enjoy those drink so much...With all that gas, it's making my tongue and throat hurt...So like you, i'd prefer to drink tea or juice or something...It's definately tastier and not to mention healthier...=]

I totally agree with you. That is how I look at people when they are drinking soda in disbelief that there whole mouth is not on fire. When I make the mistake of drinking soda...like at a restaurant that does not have any juice...and they serve tap water. I under no circumstances will drink tap water. Once I swallow that is the end of it for me. My whole mouth is on fire including my esophagus. Then the feeling of my insides exploding any minute now goes through my whole body. It really is horrible or so it feels to me. Mira91 I do not think that everyone gets this feelin or else they would really not put them self through it for what some .............

I am definately a soda person. I drink Dr. Pepper all the time. I do have Reflux, and juice bothers me more than soda does. I thik that it just depends on your body's metabolism, and how you react to things. My daughter also suffers from Reflux, and she has trouble digesting iced tea. It really makes her sick.

I do drink water, but not juice. That's the quickest way in the world to make me sicker than anything. As for the headaches, most of my soda is caffiene free, so I don't have the withdrawel headaches that I would if I drank regular sodas. I do however get them if I don't drink tea for several days.

I guess it does but who knows what sets off Reflux. Everyone is different as you mentioned and their body reacts in a different manner. That sucks that Iced tea makes your daughter sick. Iced tea is so good especially nice and cold. That I do drink a lot of mostly the flavored ones. Do you drink water and juice as well or is it just mostly soda? How long have you been drinking soda for? Do you find that when you go without soda you get a headache as some other people do?

So I guess the headache's are just a with drawl symptom? So you drink non caffeinated soda and pray tell what might those be? I would like to try those!!! The only ones I know of are Sierra Mist & Sprite and they still have caffeine in them, just not as much. Some juices do make me sick but I just stay away from them all together. The juices that make me sick that is. Water is always the best for you and the cheapest.

Ok so that it is probably because it has no caffeine in it. I am glad that you have found something that does not give you heartburn as that is not a good thing. I am not sure if caffeine with no soda is bad for you so I can not comment on that aspect of the soda wheel.

I understand that it is your favorite but why would you want heartburn? You like the way that feels? I am pretty sure that there are other things that are your favorite or taste way better than getting heartburn. You can find something to replace it, at least try. You really should not give yourself heartburn intentionally. Good Luck

I do and dont drink soda. It depends if I'm working or I'm tired from not sleeping well then I will have one. But sometimes I just don't have the money to waste on a soda + water doesn't have any calories.
When I do drink soda I'm not completly loyal but my fav's are Sprite & Mr. Pibb. I like Ocean Spray's Raspberry Lemonaide that they serve @ Olive Garden... YUM!
Beyond that I just go with the flow of how much money I have and what's on sale.

Your right soda is not good for you that is why I try to stick to juice and water, and it is cheaper as you say. I do not think that Ocean Spray is a juice but yes I do love the flavors that they make. It is very refreshing. I like to drink things that quench my thirst and soda just does not do it for me. So you think that Ocean Spray is a soda or do they make a soda as well and I am just not familiar with it? So soda is like a caffeine rush for you huh? That is what most people drink it for as well. Thanks for sharing your opinion.

I drink more iced tea than soda but my oldest daughter drinks Pepsi every day and will get a headache if she goes off of it for a few days. I hope you're on medication for your reflux. My husband has had it for years and is doing very well on medication. He can drink soda and eat spicy foods, too.

Wow you are the second person to tell me about headaches due to lack of soda. LOL that is so funny, but that just proves my point soda is a addiction, like smoking, or drinking coffee. I love iced tea especially the different flavors. Unfortunately I do not have insurance so no medicine. When I had insurance I did take medicine though and it did help me out a lot. I was able to eat a lot of foods that I love but would normally upset my stomach. Thanks for answering my question and sharing your opinion.

I guess I can drink soda but I choose not too drink it due to not being very healthy for you. It makes you gain weight and its not good for your teeth. I drink only Hot tea, Ice Green tea or plain Ice tea, Orange juice and grapefruit juice thats it. If I really didn't care about my health I would probable drink Dr. Pepper or Pepsi.

I agree with you about the whole health thing. Coke is the worst for you have you ever seen what it does to meat or a car battery. I am not sure how any one can drink the stuff if it can eat away acid and then put that into their body. Hey to each his own I am not here to judge just to live and enjoy life.

I admit I drink way too much soda. I was at wrok today with a woman who just came back from medical leave because she had two kidney stones removed whihc she says her doctor attributes to soda. She says she is now soda free (3 weeks) and when she saw mine on my desk, she gave me a good tongue lashing. I have been saying I am going to stop and have even made some attempts but then I always go back to it. I do find that when I drink tea I don't crave the soda as much. I'll guess I have to start drinking more tea.

I drink soda daily. Usually Pepsi because it is my favorite but if its not available then Coke. I dont necessarily like the fizziness of soda but I love soda!! I like fountain drinks over canned or bottles but unfortunately I dont have a soda fountain in my house, lol. I drink juice on occasion and if I am not drinking soda then I am drinking sweet tea.

I am way to addicted to soda and my family is always jumping down my throat about it. My favorite is Pepsi although due to my diabetes I have switched to diet. I am not sure if it is any better but it was suggested by my doctor to replace the Pepsi and all of its calories. I can go through any where from eight to ten cans a day. I will buy two twenty four packs compared to my husbands one. I will switch it up at times and drink a Sprite just for a little different taste, but not often. I have been drinking soda for years and years probably at least ten years. I know there are times when I go without soda and it seems to give me a headache...I know it is due to the caffeine and as soon as I have some the headache seems to go away.

Actually I don't have any uncomfortableness while drinking the soda. And I don't have any particular about the brand of the soda, only if there's only purified water. So any soft drink including the soda is fine with me. I drank the soda a lot before 23, but now, normally I don't drink the soda now for it kills your sperms. So for my next generation, I just quited it. To me, the soda is not addictive as you mentioned but it's just like money killer since I quite like drinks. These are my thoughts about soda, good luck.

Better for the next generation. Well, it tastes good but while speaking of long-term health, which is important. Result is absolutely clear there. The only key is to do or not to do. You handle this since it's just your own business. So I just give you the information. If you are interested, check online or look into some references. Hope you won't get shocked. By the way, I quited drinking soda like coca cola, etc.

You should do some research on it online or your own home experiment. I have seen various soda eat away at car battery acid, I have seen Coke poured on pork and left it out overnight and see maggots coming out of it. SO if you has seen these things what would that lead you to believe? I am not saying believe everything you read but do your own research and then formulate your own opinion.
