How do you spend your time while travelling long distance?

Usually, I keep two books in my hand bag and I spend most of the time reading. When there is a bit of greenery[some fruit trees]or a big lake then I gaze out of the window, but apart from the chats with members of my family, I usually spend all the time reading. How do you spend your time?--sleeping,chatting,reading, playing some indoor games, making conversation with others,--do share.

Hi! Kala! I suppose you are referring to long distance train journey. While travelling in train I would also keep some books/magzines with me so that I could read it, whenever I feel like. It also depends with whom I am travelling. If I am alone then the books are the best bet, besides listening to some good music on i-pod or on the mobile phone. If it is family members, who are travelling with me then I love chatting, providing others are not getting disturbed. I do not enjoy sleeping much, spcially during day time in journey. If a colleauge and friend is with me, I keep chatting with him. And if nothing works, I always enjoy and engross myself in watching the greenary around, which we miss in our Metro cities. Good Post!

Hi Deepak! Thanks for the elaborate response.Though I did have a train journey in mind ,I also thought of some people who would have to fly long distances. So, I thought I would hear different points of view.I love long train journeys;and I too do not sleep much during the day.Is there not much greenery in the place you live? Is it old or New Delhi?I have seen DELHI once [just spent a day before taking my return journey to Mumbai from Dalhousie] and did nothing much except window shop in Balika bazaar. That is all.

Hi Kala! I did not have the opportunity to fly long distance by air. Recently, when we visited Guawhati, it was just two hours journey, so we spent our time chatting and enjoyed the magnificient airial views from the sky. In my area there is less greenary, however, my office is situated in the central of New Delhi and it has plenty of greenary around. It is Palika Bazar at Connaught Place in New Delhi, not Balika Bazar. My office is nearer to this place. BTW, how was your Dalhousie trip? Have a nice day!

Serene stretch of road in Dalhousie - This is the stretch of road leading to Subhash Bowli, an eternal spring. There is a small enclosure and a sitout with a cement bench here. The water is pure, crystal clear and has all the goodness of the great Himalayan mountain spring.
Thank you Deepak! I have been pronouncing it as 'Balika' all these days. I went to Dalhousie two years back and that was the first time I saw either Delhi or the Himalayas. It was wonderful--have no words to describe this. It was not crowded and there was absolute peace. I stayed just for two days and visited one or two places nearby. There was absolute serenity all over the place and I am posting you a picture of a simple long green stretch of peaceful road where we went for long walks, both the days. There was a spring [with a small enclosure and a sit out with a cement bench [I sat here with my book once my legs became too weary to continue walking] built around this --called Subhash Bowli -this of course is not like a spring gushing out water in its full force but it is like a small regular pump, where there is water at all times. They have preserved it that way. Then we visited Kalatop and Khazziar/khajjiar.If you have not seen it make it a future certain plan,; it is easier for you to go here from Delhi--there is not much by way of sightseeing precisely here but to those who love peace and serenity all around it is ideal.

no, but then again, I generally only work on fairly small projects - I'm one of those who's discovered that I can't do large projects, a shirt is pretty much all I can cross stitch, a pillow top is all I can needle point.

Hi Kala, Spending time for long journey, before answering your question I would like to say something. We are visiting our native place mostly every year by train and reaching the third day. The journey from Delhi to Kerala is so enthusiastic and time is running so fast without boring but the return journey is really boring.(lol) Now answer to your question, we are taking magazines and newspapers with us and I love to watch the place through window by sitting inside the train and you know the happiest thing is I am getting some rest after a long hectic schedule (lol). I really love long train journey may be due to the above reason.

HI Sree! I too lovelong train journeys and one journey that I had via the Konkan railway is unforgettable. We took the train at Shoranur and though I am normally a late riser, I got up ealry in the morning because I did not want to miss the scenery outside. And nothing is as good as travelling with one's family.Happy holidays! I presume you would be going this year too.

Hi Kala, yes books are my constant companions when travelling long distance, especially by train, and I find it impossible to read while travelling by car.I love gazing out of the window and enjoying the nature outside, and last time when I travelled by train, there was a family with two kids, and soon we were all enjoying a game of cards....There was much laughter and fun.... While flying,I usually glance through the newspapers and magazines provided and also do crosswords /sudoku .I dont sleep much while travelling......

Hi dear , GReat to see you here.Sometimes we do get good company while travelling and the good feel lingers long after. Actually, a few days back I had started a discussion about the ideal age gap between couples and then there was Sandhya, Deepak , and all of us were fooling around.Come on, start some interesting discussion instead of totally abandoning my lot like that .

Firstly, I apologise for the delay in responding. Hope you understand. These days, I only get to travel very seldom. The last time I traveled was 2 years back when my sisters had come down to India. We traveled to our home in Orissa. It was different than other times because my 5 year old niece was with us. We chatted till we found some good greenery to gaze at. I love the greens and beautiful nature and can keep gazing at it forever. Other than that, I also carry books and Reader's Digest, my favorite periodical. I have grown with it and even now I share the same bond.

Thanks dear. I once did when we were traveling to Madras. It was beautiful. i was young then and was just fantacising the greens. And the 5 year old was busy explaining me why it was seeming that we were moving when our train was static and the one passing ours was in speed! Can you beat it! BTW, she is there in MD as Anouska. Another one is my 11 year old niece DIYA. You will find both there.

HI dear! Of course I understand and there is no need to apologise .We have many other things to do [I was busy through the day today and was not able to participate much at all today..With a 5 year old around you in a journey you won't have time to answer her questions;once when I had to travel from Chennai to Trichy by a van, my cousin asked me'Kala! What special food are you giving your son?He has so many questions to ask and so much to say. If you are a lover of greenery take a trip via the Konkan railway once.I did it once from Shoranur to Ahmedabad and it is an unforgettable experience.

When on a train or a bus I like to look out of the window at the passing scenery. Sometimes I listen to music on my personal stereo. I often get chatting to friendly fellow passengers. I love train journeys however long but I don't like really long bus trips nearly as much. When on a plane I count to hours down. I read a book or a magazine if the journey is smooth. I must wear ear planes so then I have to turn the sound up on the head phones high if I choose to watch a movie. If I travel on a ferry I appreciate fresh air on the deck.

i get on to sleep very fast during long journey. everybody used to tease me for sleeping saying that from the starting point i start sleeping till the destination. i really dont know why i sleep like that. but if i stay awake, i feel soo irritated or frustrated. maybe its because of the idleness. again, if i try to read, i dont get the concentration because of the sound from nearby people talking. so the only thing i would do while travelling is sleeping.. :)

It really does not matter as long as you feel refreshed and relaxed after the long sleep then nothing like it.But, sometimes you would tend to miss some rare sights that you could ahve seen otherwise.

It has to be reading for me...unless I am talking to my family. Sometimes, I like to be lost in my thoughts when I am travelling long distance and at that time, I do not like my family disturbing me with their chatting.

I am always traveling back to my own home which takes about 2 hours drive from my present dwelling. I have just relocated myself to this place to run my family business. I will normally go back twice a month. I always armed myself with reading materials whenever I travel home. This keeps me entertained throughout the journey and not to reach for my watch everytime. The distance and the time it takes to reach home always deter me from making the journey. It is so tiring and boring.

While traveling I am sometimes taking cards if there are many people then we can play with it in a long journey. Even we can play different games while traveling specially when it is college trip. But when I am alone or with one or two family members then I just listen to music on my mobile phone. In such a case I even take newspaper and read the entire newspaper.

Books are great-probably my favorite. Also brainstorming and thinking about things to write about later. I I love to travel on planes long distance and people watch in the airports. On road trips though I can get grouchy because I feel trapped and get bored easily.
