I can remember when I was younger. Whenever I would run I would get a stitch in my side. Even when I was very thin this would happen. It would be so painful so quick that I would stop running. 1. Do you know why running causes you to get a stitch in your side? 2. Have you ever got a stitch in your side when you were running? 3. How come I see folks on TV running very far distances and they are not getting a stitch in their side? 4. What can be done to take the stitch in your side pain out of running?

Do you still have your Appendex? I use to have the same thing happen to me when I ran, but after I have an Appendectomy (my appendex taken out because it ruptured) I no longer have that stitch in my side and I can run for along time on my tread mill.

My appendix is out. I do not believe that I have ran far since it has been taken out. something to think about.

I too got that pain in my side and it sure didn't help encourage me to run - maybe why I'm so fat now! NOT!

Don't know what causes the stitch in the side but I use to get it when I would run a long distance in school. I was always thin with long legs and able to move fast but didn't always do well because of the pain in my side. When I ran track and did the short distance runs, I was fine. Because of my age, I would only consider walking now. Wouldn't want to run the risk of falling or hurting my back anymore than it already bothers me.

I always get a stitch in my side but honestly I really do not know what can be done for it though.

I don't know the answers to your questions but I remember getting stitches in my side, too. These days, the only stitches I get are cross-stitches.

It has to do with being out of shape and not used to running. I remember learning about what causes it in Anatomy and Physiology class in HS. It is caused by an organ secreting something but I cannot remember what it is. I believe people who run a lot do not experience this anymore.

All I know is that I was told that if you have a stitch you should bend over at the waist and let your upper body kind of go limp, then breath in and out until the sticht is gone.I do not know for sure about what causes the stitch. I have gotten them. I guess the people who run far distances were in better shape and have been training for a long time.

From what I heard, you have to do some stretches and it could also be that you did not get enough calcium. So did you drink any milk or have any cheese before you ran? And I think the folks on Tv running do not get stitches or they ignore them and I guess the pain is all over, their feet hurt, their knees hurt, so who is to worry about that ache in your side? So do some stretches and make sure you get enough calcium.

I remember that too.......I don't run anymore either.....I used to walk all the time but because of my knees I have also stopped that....I don't know what could cause it except for it being a muscle or something related..

Hi Louise! I used to get a stich in my side when I ran too! And I never was able to figure out why either! I was thin then also! The same thing would happen to me. I would be running and then all of a sudden I would get that pain and have to stop! I never found out the reason and I guess through the years it finally went away! I don't run much any more! Once in awhile if I see the bus coming and I want to catch it, but I don't get that stich anymore! I just get really winded and ready to pass out!
