I have had the hiccups for the past hour and they are driving me a little bit loopy. I have tried drinking from the other side of the glass, a cold key down the back and even trying to scare myself. Anyone have any ideas

I heard that this works every time... get a glass of water and a clean wash cloth.. put the wash cloth over the opening of the glass and sip the water through it.. I heard that it works.. but what has always worked for me and everyone that I've ever tried this on.. is to control breathing (since hicups is nothing more than a spasm in your diaphragm) Take a deep breath (as deep as you can get it) and let it out one small breath at a time... repeat this a few times and it makes the spasms quit :)

sweetie, yer not doing it right..... DEEEEEEEPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP breath............ let out ONE SMALL breath at a time.... until all the deep breath is gone.. you have to concentrate hard on your breathing to do this correctly! listen close to the breaths as you let them out slowly..

Hi Little_Stormy. I will try anything at this stage, I think I am going mad, I have tried the whole breathing thing but it does not seem to be working. I have only ever had hiccups in my life for a few minutes, never hours.

Take a deep breath, and immediately stick a finger in each ear. Hold your breath for as long as you can, but not so long as you pass out! It works every time for me.

Have you tried holding a pencil in your mouth sideways and then drink as much water from a glass that you can at one time?

it has always worked with my daughters.. or give them a full glass of water and have them drink it until it was empty.. that worked .. not all the time, depended on how they drank it and how quick. It works for me though.. Just idea's that I have used..

try drinking soda (the carbination will help) or try a spoonfull of sugar). my daughter just had them for a couple of house a couple of weeks ago but my hubby had them for three days. he went to the emergency room and they gave him a muscle relaxant.

I did try the sugar cure but it did not work, in the end it was the controlled breathing that worked. Wow your husband had them for three days that must have been bad, I had them for just over four hours and it really got to me. Thanks for the tips

Actually we've always done either taking a deep breath and holding for as long as you can or a spoon of regular table sugar. Either one has always worked for us. ~~AT PEACE WITHIN~~ **STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS**

I just got up and if you still have these it's been 12 hours. I hope you are over the hiccups by now. Next time you get these try breathing into and out of a paper bag. You get some carbon dioxide that way and it often stops the hiccups.

I think by now your hiccups must be stopped. It is almost 6 hours since you have started this discussion. Don't you think that people should have a luxory of closing a discussion once its purpose is found? I think yes, becaue I have started an April Fool message and it is still getting responses!

Are you still having hiccups? What I normally do when I have one is, I'll drink three glasses full of water consecutively. It always works!

Hi zahfran. Thankfully my hiccups are gone, I Was nearly driven insane with them last night, I tried everything to get rid of them including drinking water. I did get some useful advice on here and if it was not for my myLot friend I might still have the hiccups. Cheers

I have heard that watching a horror movie should scare the hiccups out of you.. if that doesnt work do what spike the dog did in tom and jerry cartoon.. watch that episode.. you laugh your brains out so that should cure your hiccups..

Well, having the hiccups for any length of time can be annoying. It can be something that can really tend to stress you out as well as when nothing is working and especially if you are needing to get something done can be annoying as well. When I get the hiccups most of the time I resort to trying to hold my breathe for about 30 seconds if I can, and drinking water. I have heard that drinking warm water usually works the best.

My hubby works in the ER, when it gets to a certain point ( I forget how many hours) I think he said they use thorazine. Have you tried weird things like jumping in a cold shower or putting sugar on the back of your tongue then swallowing it a few times. Or and this is not fun...pull on your tongue hard. Hiccups is not a medical emergency..I assume no other problems.

You are so welcome. Another good tip is to drink a glass of plain water. Sometimes it's because of the weather, though I don't have a scientific explanation for that.

I promise you this will work. Take a be heaping tablespoon of sugar in your mouth and let it SLOWLY dissolve in your mouth. The trick is for it to be BIG HEAPING SPOONFULL and to let it SLOWLY DISSOLVE ALL ON ITS OWN. I promise this really does work, it has been proven too on WebMD

You should be ok from the sugar rush. I have never had a problem with it, and my husband is a doctor and psychologist and he said it will work. Good Luck and let me know if it does work ok.

sometimes my dad too gets similar type of hiccups. Then i prepare a mixture of jaggery and dry ginger and a little ghee. Make it into small balls of a size of gooseberry and give him one by him with an interval of 10 mts. Then the hiccups stops.

ginger rhizome - one piece of ginger
My friend Ginger is a rhizhome which is used both in cooking which is very good for health, which helps for digestion, relieves gas, indigestion, induces hunger and it also acts as medicine like, if we have cold, we add two pinches of dry ginger powder, two pinches of turmeric powder two pinches of black pepper corn powder to 1 cup hot milk and without adding sugar, we drink and the cold is gone.
