UK drivers - will Alistair Darling's £2k persuade YOU to buy a new car?

This seems a flawed argument and I don't think many people will be able to take advantage of it.
If you drive a car that's 10 years old you do that because you can't afford an newer one.
So if you can get a £16k car for £14k big deal. If you ain't got £16k you almost certainly don't have £14k so it's no sort of bargain.
Or am I looking at this the wrong way?
What effect will it have on second hand car dealers and scrap metal merchants?

You have valid points on the budget available to those of us with 10 year old cars...We're running them using "Bangernomics"! I'm thinking many cars sold through this scrappage deal will probably be at the smaller, more economical end of the scale where the £2k incentive will have more effect..I'm just realising that Eligible cars had to be registered on or before July 1999..My car Wasn't first registered until September that Year! So,do I have to wait another couple of months before mine would be suitable? It's interesting too that the scheme is also available to "White Van Man"..I wonder how much they'll make use of it?

A Friend in Spain told me when I mentioned this scheme while it was still in the pipeline pre-budget that She'd bought herself a new car under a Spanish initiative to boost their car production and sales..the difference being, their scheme was a 0% Loan to buy a car outright! I quite liked the sound of that, once I'd thought through the bottom line of the scrappage deal...Thanks for best response!

If he'd just give me the £2k, I'd buy a £2k car and move up in the world! Actually, he could save the treasury a bit of cash to put towards a plan that was actually useful and well thought about by just giving me £1500. It would still be a step up for me, so everyone's happy.

sounds like a valid point to me.
most people i know are just praying their car keeps running, they're not even wishing for a new car right now.if they made that 6,they might get a few people.
they're having deals here for $10,000 off,and it's still too high.
