people use cell phones to be available anywhere that they go. It is much more convenient than a home phone in that respect. Part of it is safety. Many people don't feel safe without some way of contacting people if something goes wrong. Some disadvantages are: the monthly bill, speculation about them causing cancer (probably not true), if battery runs out you are screwed. Really nothing bad about them. They have easily replaced home phones for personal use.

I have never really been a real huge fan of cellphones myself. I never really seen the real sense in them unless you have to travel for work or such. I always see all of these young kids on them and I think why? I went so many years with out one and just actually bought a cheap trac fone a few weeks ago only for emergencies. There has been a few situations that I have been in where I thought Dang, I wish I had a cell phone so after a long time I broke down and got one. It just uses phone cards though and I haven't used it even once yet. I think that they are nice for tough situations like if your car breaks down something like that. I just don't think that all these young kids need them like they think do...they will sit in them for hours texting or talking when they could easily be on your land line phone saving minutes and/or money. I think it is just more of a fashion statement for most people.
I would have to say that an advantage would be that you would have it for emergencies and some of the disadvantages are car accidents that are caused by people on their cell phones and the cost maybe.
