Do you or another family member use the phone a lot?

I find that teenagers these days tend to use their phones quite a lot. I mean, I guess I'm being contradictory right now, since I am still a teenager technically, but I never spend more than 15 minutes on an average week on the phone. It's the honest truth.
Take my sister for example though. She's usually calling one friend or other every day, and her calls can last up to an hour and a half. It really gets on my nerves or my parents nerves, especially when we need to use the phone for an emergency. And my sister tends to talk really fast and loud when she's with her friends, so you can imagine what her phone conversations must be like. I heard from a friend that she read in the newspaper that a girl, who used to be an A-B average student, spent more than $4000 on text messages alone in ONE MONTH. That was pretty darn crazy, and her dad literally hammered her phone so she couldn't use it anymore. I could have used that $4000 for my university tuition. It's a lot of money to be throwing around.
Do you use the phone a lot? Or is it another family member that does? Does it bother you?

since my family is scattered around in and out of the country and i move a lot myself during project work, we tend to rely on our phones for communication. being very close in the family, we talk everyday to other family members and friends and colleagues. and that's quite a big number.
if i talk to a person often, my calls would last only a few minutes. but if i talk to a friend whom i've never seen for some time, the call usually lasts about an hour or so, spent mostly laughing.
i used to have a boyfriend before... we'd talk for an average of 3-6 hours a day... everyday. we pay a huge amount for phone bills every month, but that's one of the sacrifices one makes in a long distance relationship. expense is not a problem as long as we are happy. but i could do that because i'm spending my own money as i was already working that time. it's not like a $4000 bill of a student who still gets money from the parents. that's different altogether.
nowadays, i still use the phone a lot but i'm subscribed to unlimited calls and texts to a network and all family members belong in the same network so it's easy to get in touch with them.

Yeah I think getting some sort of unlimited package is a really good idea, my dad's suggesting that I do that for university. But basically your phone usage is pretty normal, I'm guessing most people do that. Of course, I'm probably an exception, I almost never use the phone, but I'm fairly certain I will next year. Thanks for your response!

I don't know how people can spend that much! Phones are wonderful but they are replacing real human contact and I think we'll eventually be sorry that we made them the center of our lives.
I don't use my phone. At home, my sons call a couple times a week and we'll talk and laugh for a few minutes. I have a cell phone but rarely use it, I pay $15 a month for it and it is only for emergencies or for my sons to be able to reach me fi I'm not at home. I have over 40 hours of minutes saved up on it!

Oh wow that sure is a lot of minutes! I don't use the phone much, I have a prepaid card for my cell phone and I still have over $40 on it, and I've had it for 8 months. So I think I'm doing a pretty good job of keeping my spending down to a minimum. It will probably increase next year with me going to university, but I'll be getting a proper phone plan then so nothing to worry about there. Thanks for your response!

I don't understand how you could spend $4000 per month on text messages. If that's an actual true statistic, it's obviously the fault of the parent, who didn't forsee that they should buy an unlimited texting package for $15 or $20 (depending on your service provider).
I used to be obsessed with my phone - especially back in high school. I would be texting everyone back and forth - in school and I would ALWAYS get in trouble for it! I bought an unlimited text package, thankfully, otherwise I would probably be up to at least $300 or something. I don't really use it that much, now, though, because I actually LIKE not talking to people sometimes and I don't enjoy texting as much as I used to.

Yeah it was really a shocker when I heard that. Buying an unlimited text package probably would've been much smarter. I don't use my phone often at all, for calling or texting, and I use it on a Pay-as-you-go card, so I can't text that much even if I wanted to anyways. I don't see the point of texting in school, if you had stuff to say can't you just wait until lunchtime or after school to talk to your friends? I never really understood that. Thanks for your response!

I'm not the one that spent $4000, I just read on the news that some girl did. I hardly ever use the phone at all, even once a week is pretty rare for me. Once a month is more normal. I tend to use MSN and online chat more often, I find it more convenient at times, especially when talking to my boyfriend and keeping him a secret from my dad. Online chat is so much easier to conceal that. Thanks for your response!

Hi! When I was in my teenage years, I really love to chat on the phone and call cute guys who didn't know me and talk to them. When I got to college, I was just speaking on the phone with my boyfriend who is my hubby now. There are really times when I love chatting especially with my friend, now that I am married. We would not notice that it has been an hour of talking and laughing and talking againa. This just happens once in a while because I am so busy with so many stuff. Have a great day!

Yes my father is using a lot of phone but he has never reached that much amount. Even I am using phone a lot but I have some good ideas to use it by using some good plans.
15 minutes a week is so less for you.
Even if I got a call from some friends then its duration extends sometimes to 15 minutes but there are always some messages which are coming from my friends.
I may be using around 30-40 hours in a week.

hahah, oh wow. thats why you get unlimited texting xD
I have a friend who texts more then that a month. its insane, I don't know where you find the time to text that much.
I don't text anymore, because I just didn't feel like getting minutes for my phone, but seriously ...
yeah, teenagers like to be social =P
I am one of those social teens.
I talk on the phone for more then an hour a day. its not me calling people either, like a million people call me everyday.
depending who it is we talk for a long time, but most of the time it's just random small talk or telling me about whats going on or asking me to hang out.
which sometimes DOES lead to me calling people, like inviting them to come too.
or if someone tells me to call them.
or if I'm freaking out and needa vent, or need something, or .. yeah. xD
whatever's going on.
but I don't usually need to call other people.
there are people, like my friends and family that just call me everyday around the same time.
but I really don't mind, I love talking on the phone.
and I know what you mean by it can be annoying, but I stay in my room when I'm talking on the phone. unless it's family, cause like they want to talk to everyone else too usually, but yeah.
hahahah, I love talking on the phone.
and on msn of course.
and well, in person is the best, but anyway this is kind of off subject.
so, Ima go :)
have a nice daaay.
peace !

whoa... that's a whole lot of money to spend on text messages, and in one month only???!!! wth!!! probably doing international texting too, but it seems to be exaggerated to spend so much on just text messages.
anyway, when i had my first handphone, i used to text a lot, make a lot of calls... but that was a long time ago, im soooo over it now. i only text when it is important or if i still have some unused free text messages and its gonna be forfeited the next day, thats the time i forward jokes.. but other than that, i dont text that much anymore.
i have a daughter she's 12 now, but in the next month gonna be a teenager, i bought her cellphone, but she seems not to like it. as in , it's just there... lol
then one time she told me, mommmy, i dont like cellphones, and i dont like accessories either. so there... lol... now i know at least i wont be bothered by my daughter asking me to buy such and such... and i wont be spending too much money on loads for her hp. she used it only when we are out and she and her little brother are the only ones left at home. or when they are at their cousin's house, so we can call them and knows how they are.

Hi,reichiru
I am surprised that you only use about 15 minutes on the phone in a week,I cannot imagine it!sometimes even a call will be longer than 15 minutes.Well,I don't spend much time on my phone as well, but it is far longer than you spend on your phone.I will surf the wap during my English class(LOL),and sometimes play games on my phone when I don't want to listen to the teachers. If friends send me messages,I will reply, and he reply,I reply....This takes some time!People say that spending too much time on phones is not good to our health,so you are lucky as you only spend 15 minutes or so on phones.
Have a nice day!

I use my phone day and night. My phone is used for personal and business so it get used constantly. I have unlimited everything or I would be broke if playing by minutes. One thing I don't really like is when someone is driving and talking or texting. Sometimes I feel that if I didn't have my phone, life would be so much more difficult. Phones are the main technology of communication. My husband uses the phone all the time as well. He gets tons of phone calls in the middle of the night and drives me crazy. I have family and friends that joke with me and say they are going to have to do surgery to get hat phone from my ear!
