What a waste...or is it?

Ok, so I've just been laid off. Or fired actually as there is no chance that I will be going back to work for the same company. EVER. I've kind of been expecting this, what with all the news and talk of the horrid economy. Its gotten me thinking about how many people are in the same boat? And also how many find themselves looking at the world of work in a new light? I mean I've been working at least part time for the last five years (I wasn't old enough to work before then and I was in school). Its always been about strength to me. Being able to work was somethign that I was taught was important. But i realised how much I actually have been missing inside my home. My nephew is almost two. And talking. Really well. He grows nightly. And my dog, well he acts old. He's forgotten how to play ball for hours. So what I want to know is how much do you miss while working, or do you think you miss? What ways could this be fixed while your in a job? and Do you think it's really worth it to work and miss out on the small things in life?

I find working is a necessity for income but I need to maintain my relationship with family and friends. So I need to balance my life with job. It is a bit hard but I don't intend to leave any of it. I don't want to be out of money but I don't want to be lonely either.

I think a lot of us are forced into working because of our financial situations & needs. I've been working ever since I could - 16 - and I have for about 5 to 6 days per week (along with going to school full-time), and it's been about 3 years of that. I feel like I'm slightly missing out because a lot of my friends don't have to have jobs (as their parents can afford to support them), but for me - it's different. I definitely agree, when you work too much - you DEFINITELY miss out on important things, such as being able to spend time with your family, friends, and even just spending time with yourself (if that makes sense). But we do what we gotta do, unfortunately. It would be nice if we could all quit our day (or night/part-time jobs, in this case) and enjoy what we have around us, but unfortunately that's just not the case.
