It's been a while since I lived in Virginia, but there are so many places to see and do in Virginia even if you just go picnicing for the day. The first place that comes to mind is the "Kings Dominion" amusement park. It is an awesome way to spend the day if you are into thrills and chills. They have tons of roller coasters and roller coaster type rides, lots of places to eat and snack (although a little pricey, so bring your wallet with cash or credit cards or pack a lunch and spend a leisurely time at one of the pretty pavillions on the grounds) and lots of stuff for the little ones to enjoy, too. Another place to go and enjoy is Busch Gardens. Although it's been a long time since I've been there, I do remember there were areas representing countries (i.e. Germany which serves German beer, bratwurst, etc. You get the picture). The rides in each area reflect each area as well. They even had a stable full of Budsweiser Clydsdales (which is roped off and you are not allowed to touch the horses, just look at them, and boy are they something to look at! They are huge and absolutely gorgeous and so clean and sweet smelling. The stable itself is clean enough you could eat off the floor (yuck). They are gorgeous animals, tho. Welll worth a look/see. Finally and although I've never been there, is Colonial Williamsburg. My mother-in-law went there all the time for the antiques and lawn sales and many outlet stores (also famous in that area). I'm told Colonial Williamsburg is something to see with people dressed in period dress, doing period chores and letting you buy some of their wares when they are done. There are carriage rides, of course, and site seeing tours and everything you'd expect from a town set back in that time period. There are many hiking trails, car rides through forests where leaves are changing and beautiful, not to mention downtown Richmond which is steeped in history as the capitol of the Confedercy. There are museums, walking tours and tours you can take on your own. Downtown is lovely. I worked there for 5 years. (I've also lived and was raised in Greensburg, Pennsylvania (20 miles east of Pittsburgh), Ft. Jackson, SC, (basic training) Ft. Huachuca, AZ, (AIT)Bamberg, Germany (Permanent Duty) and Concord, NC. (where I came home to have my first-born son and daughter) I now reside in Kannapolis, NC (where I moved after I moved after my husband moved and my kids left home) and which rolls up its sidewalks at 9:00 p.m.!) ;-)

i like the shenandoah valley area with all the caves and the beautiful mountanious surroundings. i live in a tiny town that also rolls up at 9 except for a nasty denny's rest. thats if you can find the cook who is usuall smoking a joint out back, no bar's within 15-20 miles, it's great. so ya better go to the store early and stock up on night time snacks if thats your thing. when living in dacula georgia the only thing around was wild life past 8 pm, dam deer always eating my veggies, their lucky i dont hunt. but my drooling neighbor was eyeing them up. like small town's. oh but when season comes the roads are ful of northeners vacationing, talk about traffic jams in a small town, even the store owners that make a good buck from them cant wait for them to go home. welcome to florida, now go home.
