One of my favorites is Mercedes Lackey. She writes the Valdemar series, and books based on fairy tales.

Terry Brooks is very good. I have read quite a few of his books. I aslo recommend Neil Gaiman's The Sandman. It largely depends on what kind of fantasy you like to read about. Terry Brooks did a series of stories about a magical kingdom called Landover with fairies, unicorns and a king who cames from our world. The first one is called Magic Kingdom For Sale - Sold! and has 6 books in this series. But I believe all of Terry Brooks books are fantasy based anyway.

Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman (Dragonlance) are the best. All the other authors writing Dragonlance are great too and the series is the greatest fantasy series there is!

Jim Butcher and Neil Gaiman.... Also, I love Harry Potter but I've not read anything else J. K. Rowling has written outside of the seven books in the actual series so I don't know if I like her style otherwise. I only say that because Jim Butcher's style varies so much between the Dresden Files and the Codex Alera.

You mean I have to pick just one. I love reading and Fantasy is wonderful. But with so many wonderful writers out there it is hard to pick just one. So I must say that they are all my favorites. Some do stand out more than others but I love them all.

theres definately one more arty fowl after the time paradox, but thats the only one ive read up to. those books, along with final fantasy x had a huge part to play in making me as retarded as i am now. i dont read much fiction, much less fantasy, but i did like the hobbit and rotk by tolkein. i do enjoy bernard cornwells viking series, sword song being my favourite, but thats not really fantasy. eve the empyrean age is a good sf read if youre not averse to mmorpgs, the multiperspective approach does make ones head hurt after a while, however.

My favorite fantasy author is Tad Williams, with The War of the Flowers (I love all of his books but nothing as magical as this one.) it portrays fantasy in a whole new light. and it makes me love the author even more for it. everything is expected... yet unexpected. definite a good read
