We're all going on a summer holiday....

One of the things that I liked about my last employment was the holiday entitlement. I received 30 days paid holiday a year, plus another 10.5 public holidays. In fact I often didn't manage to take all my holiday and would carry anything up to 9 days over into the next year, which simply made it harder to take all my leave. What is your annual holiday entitlement? Do you manage to take it all, or does it accumulate never to be used?

I earn 8 hours of paid time off every two weeks. So basically one day for every two weeks i work. Hmmm i should have about 123 hours as of today. They carry over and when i accumulate so many i start to lose them. That bothers me. Why not go ahead and pay me for them??? Why do they just disappear???

I know and the craziest part is that my boss is always asking when i am going to take a vacation, yet when i want just one day off, its like moving a mountain to get a replacement in if our regular replacement cant make it. So i finally told him one day yeah ill take a vacation when you find someone to relieve me for the time off.

P1ke-
I hate our sytem over here to be honest. As a teacher, it's fine, but where my husband works, well it's typical of most places. He gets 2 weeks, but if he goes over his sick days he must take vacation days. So, he had to take his vaction when our daughter had her surgery so he could be there with us. Go figure. So, what are you going to do right? It does not roll over in most jobs. Generally most over here it's a use it or lose it situation. Even in teaching it's like that. At my last teaching post we were "encouraged" to call in sick and use our sick days and personal time. Typically, I got two weeks vacation as well as a teacher. And no, contrary to popular belief I never had my summers off as a teacher, I generally was teaching summer school.

I am a firm believein the work/life balance. The graveyards are full of indispensible people! Of course we should put in a conscientious job. But we do it better if we are properly rested both physically and mentally. I did work for a good employer in the respect of the hours and conditions that we had. I think that in Western society we have developed an attitude that says that work is GOOD! But it isn't if that is all that we live for and more and more people seem to be seeing it that way.

I should add in that over here there are 8 standard holidays, most of which revolve around the Christian holidays of Easter, Christmas, etc. My husband and I don't celebrate those as we're Pagan but instead of being allowed to work the Christian holidays and take off his Pagan one, he has to use vacation to do that or not take the day at all. Go figure too on that one.

I've been there just over a year and I have a week coming. My daughter is coming to visit this summer so I'm sure I'll take it then. Probably sometime in June when she first arrives although she'll probably be here a month or so. I can hardly wait.

Wow, you have some great employment there! I've never had a job that offered a paid vacation or paid sick days. Most jobs give you a weeks vacation after a year and you have to be there 2-3 years for more than that.
I'm kind of on permanent vacation with the employment situation here. So it's like a working vacation with a very flexible schedule.

Most people work to live but some workaholics live to work. While most nations regard vacations as an essential part of life, time to spend with family and unwind, vacations here are few and far between for the average worker. Take teachers; on their summer vacations they usually take jobs instead of relaxing so that they can make ends meet. Others work during their vacations, too, when they get them.
I hope you have a lot of fun!

We have 15 days which is mandated by our labor laws. And then our own institution grants employees who have been in service for 10 - 15 years a 5-day leave with pay, 15 and above- 10 day-leave with pay. If you're not able to use these, then they'll be converting it into cash. Happy mylotting.

That is terrific! You'd be hard pressed to find that kind of vacation time here in the USA, at least not until you've worked for that employer for a long time. My last employer was a major US bank, and they allowed 5 days per year, including sick time. After 5 years it was increased to 10 days. What the increments were after that I never found out, since I don't work there anymore. There were 5 paid public holidays, but since I worked for a call center, we had to work them.

Not once in 33 years did I have less than 15 days holiday entitlement! 5 days isn't enough to do anything! How can you have a proper holiday? I guess it's what you are used to. Personally I tried to have 3 weeks in the summer and the period between Christmas and New Year too. That just makes me angrier about the banks. All these people working and yet they still couldn't balance the books!

All those stressed and tired people working...no wonder they can't balance books. Also consider that many of these people would earn more working at a fast food restaurant or discount store. Not to be totally negative however, for those who stuck it out there was great job security (high turnover rate), and reasonably good advancement opportunities.

My hubby calls his holiday and vacation time the time he can't work in winter months so he is off work for months sometimes he is always raring to get back to work and out of the house when it starts to thaw enough to work again.

He works outside so he won't be working just yet he is making a appointment ot see a doctor to get something for his allergies since he smothers and can't breath when he goes outside. I can't even have a window open and for a few days their thought I lived in a oven..thankfully it cooled back down to the 70's..

I get a really measly 365 days a year! David was just about to get his holiday entitlement increased by a few days for longer service but although he was supposed to finish up on Friday coming his bosses have decided that as of 12 o'clock on Friday just past he no longer has to return to work - apart from in a couple of weeks he has to go in and hand back security badge etc! So that is it the manufacturing from the place I used to work no longer exists! He is having a holiday this week and he better enjoy it as I don't care what he does but he isn't going to be here all day every day annoying me! lol xxx

paid holiday is one of the things i like about my job too. i get 35 days of paid leave to be taken any time. this number will increase even more when i reach a certain number of years in service. it's really great to have this number of leave as it gives me the freedom to do things i like. i love traveling so having a lot of leave is important. also, i am able to bring my parents to the doctor and run errands without having to worry too much.
i used to accumulate my leave entitlement but used it all up two years ago. i was studying part time, working full time and getting a new place all at the same time. i used most of my leave on supervising the renovation process to ensure that nothing major goes wrong.

yes it's a pretty good job looking at the paid leave. however, the pay isn't that great. thing is, i value time more than money. that's why i've been in this job for more than ten years.

I didn't get a 'scheduled' vacation from an employer until I'd been in the work force for.................holy cow, now that I think about it, I've NEVER had one!
I'm a workaholic. But then I had a sweet deal. I worked for 6 to 8 months, then took 2 or 3 off to travel. They were working 'holidays', but it was the best way to go! LOL

Oh and by the way, you might be interested to know that I have a buyer putting in an offer on our house and he's from the UK! So that's one from Sweden, one from the UK and I just had a family here from Regina who are 'in love' with it too, so I many be camping out in one of your sheds before you know it! LOL

Hi p1key,
Gosh with all those holidays that you used to get, your last employment must be a good firm to have worked for, I'll luck if I get three weeks off in a year and when the bank holidays were taken out of our annual leave, they were really tight, thank goodness I am not working for them anymore. Hugs.

That would be so nice. I don't know anyone that wants to watch 3 kids at one time though, especially at their ages. It's okay though, it was my choice to stay home with them. I'll get "me time" in a couple years when they are all in school.

Do you know, I am not actually sure of that! Where I work is closed for 4 weeks of the year I think so I get those weeks off. Then a bit more on top. I know it isn't a lot because I've not been there for very long. I'm trying to get back to college and work as a teaching assistant so then I can have 3 months holiday every year!

In my country, the standard holidays granted to a full-time employee is 4 weeks a year, paid. Some industries provide 6 weeks paid and some also add on a loading percentage so you end up with a little bit of a bonus when you take your holiday's as well. As for now, I have no idea what my actual allocation is, but I'm fortunate enough to be able to take whatever time I want whenever I want and will still be paid. The problem though, is that apart from a day here and there to tend to boring stuff like visa renewals etc, I don't take leave at all. It's been more than 5 years since I've taken an actual holiday! I don't recall taking a sick day in all that time either.

I have already gone on a summer holiday for twenty days.I went before my exam and enjoyed my time there. The surrounding was calm and good.I never took books to study over there. When i was working in a company then i never took leave as i had just joined it.A one months leave is very good to get refreshed and again go for work.

My husband's a teacher, so he has plenty of holidays - he's saving them up in order to have an earlier retirement. However, sick leave entitlements end up being wasted if you don't use them - he once managed over 20 years without taking one sick day, and unfortunately, they will all be lost. My son (an apprentice) is told by his employer when he's to take holidays. He doesn't particularly mind, but it's a bit of a cheek!
