Yahoo is getting rid of a bunch of applications, including GeoCities. http://tech.yahoo.com/news/ap/20090424/ap_on_hi_te/yahoo_geocities I have my personal website with GeoCities. Did they send me notification of this? No. I had to read about it in the news. Now I have to find another free-hosted site. Anyone know of a good one? One where I can just transfer everything wholesale?

Our writing group has a website on a free site. You can check it out at www.owg.netfirms.com. That is terrible business practice to not notify you. Most of the websites I deal with let us know (like myLot) well in advance that changes are a-coming. Hope you find one that works for you.

I don't know much about web designing etc., I just know that we don't pay for this site... or our blog which is on blogger.

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately, they use templates. And I didn't see anywhere that it was free.

They are also doing away with yahoo 360 where I have a blog, luckily it's not my main one, I did get an email about it but I use my yahoo email as my main one so that's probably why. I've only ever really had blogs so I don't really know how you'd transfer everything unless you can just copy and paste the code like with a blogger blog. They used to have a photo sharing place too that they got rid of which I used to use that ticked me off too.

Oh gee that is sad to hear. I've had my own domain for nearly 9 years now but my first site was at geo and that's actually where I first learned html. I'm afraid I don't know of any others at this time. There used to be a bunch but most have gone to pay only or disappeared. Wishing you luck though that you'll be able to find something. Have you saved the pages you have there? Highly recommend doing that then it's much easier if you do have to start over - not really 'easy' but better than lossing everything.

Yes, I spent about an hour downloading all my files (most of them, anyway... some of the stuff I don't need anymore) after posting that.

wish i could help you out there, reminds me of the time that they got rid of the yahoo auctions. i made a nice amount of money on there over the years and then poof they decide to get rid of them, though they did tell us of that one. i actually preferred yahoo's auctions to ebay, but now i had to go back to ebay as yahoo's auctions is no more. good luck finding a new place to host your site i wish you luck

Thanks. The thing I liked about GeoCities was that I could design my own site using HTML instead of being limited to someone else's idea of a website (i.e. using a template).

Doesn't that stink? They did the same thing with aol years ago. I had up a personal site that I put a lot of time and effort in. I could have had the social media networking going and blogs making money. But aol shut down their personal websites. I barely got any warning and they didn't have someway to transfer my information to another site. It stunk. Good luck to you. When I last checked, geocities was already down.

Well, they're not signing up any new accounts, but I could still view my site today.

I have a couple of my pages listed with WebRing so got an email from them offering to transfer my site (and anyone else's who has a GeoCities site) for free, so have opted to do that. But thanks for the information.
