Even I used to check my system for viruses and other threats every now and then. But soon I understood that No Anti-Virus software can clean my system to a perfection of 100% or even more than 70%.
I too have got figures like you got, but even after curing these, my system failed to perform well.
Although anti-viruses do not clean 100% of the viruses, but they limit or restrict the no of viruses, which of course is better than having a lot of them. But scanning again and again is what irritates me.
I tried using more than one anti-virus software at a time and sometimes rotated these softwares one after another. This proved to be effective, at least more than the single software system. But again, it requires lots and lots of efforts and time.
These days I simply keep my system working, then after a specified time (2-3 months), I format my system. I regain the speed and performance. To avoid the need of keeping data backup, I format only the Operating System drive and do not store any useful file in that drive as I format it often. This is working fine for me!

Formatting system is really easy task if you have Windows XP Bootable (if you use this version of windows). You just insert this disk and get started, there's nothing to do much. You just need to read the instructions and proceed accordingly.
Try this link, it will help you: http://lifehacker.com/software/windows/geek-to-live-how-to-format-your-hard-drive-and-install-windows-xp-from-scratch-157578.php

and we would catch up on things too while doing it, but its been quite awhile for me since I last did that;

That's great! Congratulations!
I scan my computer every weekend. I am using Avast Home Edition currently, which is working OK as of now. There could be a huge file directory for I have all my writings backing. I regularly clean the unnecessary files and try to keep it simple.

I have a definite dislike for the programs created to scan the registry, and know a few people who have had real problems as a result of using them.
The registry is a dangerous place to edit unless you are certain of what you are doing. I have had to edit the registry a few times for specific reasons, but would never trust a third party application with such a task.

Like many people I have Norton Antivirus set to scan the computer on a weekly basis. My current file count on my desktop is around 800,000 and the laptop has around 600,000 files stored.
This is usually just a formailty because there is rarely anything dubious on my computers.

Dear friend,
I do have the security software that would automatically scan my computer every day. I used to scan my folders before but after I installed ESET smart securtity I rarely scan manually.

Well I don't know how many files there are in my computer.
But I am always scanning my computer after connecting some external device.
Any way my Anti virus has scheduled scan which runs thrice in a week but whenever I connect any external device I am scanning my computer.
I am using Trend Micro Anti Virus.

Hello rakesh284: Yes I agree I like to do it then too;
I've not heard of Trend Micro Anti virus, I think I am severely outdated in a lot of my programs, as I had mentioned in a previous post I just sorta stick to what I know and use the same old, same old stuff, but thank you so much for sharing and for stopping by;

hi dreamweaverjan
anti-virus settings in my computer directly to detect if there is a virus that attacked my computer.Whenever i get connected to internet,database at my anti virus directly update.So, i believe there is no virus at my system.So far I have never deliberately run anti virus. Virus scan only when I use the flash disk.I plainly do not have how many files,folders and sub folders in my computer.as long there is a place to store new data, old data will not be in the clear :)

When I have a look at your title of "I just finished scanning the folders on my computer!..." first, I think that you are into virus scanning, then after I read your text and found that you just use Norton Systemworks for files and folders scanning, it makes me smile. lol. So cute you are. I hope I didn't get your text wrong. I seldom scan my computer only if there might be some virus or trojans. I hate trojans in particular since it can make my information unsafe. My way for the computer is to scan to check the internal program or to clear up fragment in order that my computer functions well. I do this without period limitation, and I will do it as long as I'm not busy. But I know frequently putting the system in order is good for regular operation. And it makes the computer run faster. So be ready to clear the computer when available. lol

HI Yuguoli: I'm glad I could make you smile at least (G)!!
Yes I also do all sorts of internal programs to help keep my computer running safely and to make sure there are no malicious files or trojans in my system;
I spent most of the afternoon yesterday cleaning out all the "gunk" on my system
you have a good weekend now, and thanks for stopping by;
