My myLot friends from the US

hello there, this is for all of you, but particularly for those who are from the USA. i am a computer science engineering student from India and i'll be graduating with my bachelors degree next month. i have applied to a few universities in the US for masters in CS.,....and now, i have two admits. one from univ. of Florida, with around 40% wavier. and another from Univ. of Minnesota, Duluth with TA....which includes full tuition plus expenses plus health insurance. i am really happy about both these offers but am totally confused...which one to go for. UFL is big and its good univ. for computer science, but i have been told that Florida is am expensive place and its also not so easy to find on and off campus jobs there. going by rankings, UMD is not as big as UFL, but its a good one...and looking at the huge aid they are giving...i might opt for that.......one of my cousins is at Minneapolis and he said its good....except that its a very very cold place. now, what do you all have to say?....what else can you tell me about these places and the universities?......any help is appreciated. Thanks.... have a nice day.

I live in Florida, and the weather is great. Florida is expensive, though. UF is in Gainesville, though, which is not as expensive as a lot of other cities in Florida. You probably will be able to find a job, but it will not be the highest paying job. Minnesota is cold! However, Minnesota does sound like a much better offer. It may not be able to be very easy to find a job there, either, but it does not seem like you will need one. Good Luck with everything. Whichever you chose, I bet you will love it!

hello there, thanks for replying... yes i have heard that Florida is a beautiful city with great whether. but, as of now, i haven't decided anything yet. but, i must say, this UMD aid is so tempting..... i want to ask one thing, is there any reason you would say no to any of these two...(except for the whether in Minnesota) Have a nice day!

Honestly, the only reason I would not choose Minnesota is the climate.......Other than that, it does sound like a better deal. It is not cold there all the time. It is actually very nice during the summer months. It is very different from Florida because you will be able to see the seasons change, whereas in Florida, you will not!

a pic i took in Duluth on vaca! - This is a (black and white) artistic pic I took while in Duluth on vacation - it's of Superior Lake. It's truly a gorgeous place!
OMG! I LIVE IN MINNESOTA! WOO WOO! I actually go to the University of Minnesota undergraduate school in the Twin Cities area, so I don't really know all that much about the Duluth campus. (By the way - how coincidental! I live in the same city as your friend - Minneapolis). But I DO know that UMD is EXTREMELY hard to get into, so CONGRATULATIONS! And congrats on getting so much financial aid. I wish you would have considered coming to the U of M's grad school in the twin cities (Minneapolis); it's actually a really exciting place to live. Never a dull moment. Minnesota is good, though - sure, it might get cold in the winter and humid in the summer - but you NEVER have to worry about things like hurricanes, rarely do we have to worry about floods, and we've had like ONE tornado in the past decade. It's a safe place to live. I don't know about the particular area of Florida that you're talking about, but I've always been scared to live there because of their hurricane issues. I think you should really consider University of Minnesota Duluth. It's a good place to go to school - albeit sometimes it could pass as a "party school". It's about 2 1/2 or 3 hours from Minnesota's capital (St. Paul) and Minneapolis (where I live! another big city!), and Duluth is an incredibly beautiful place, and there's a lot to do. There are movie theaters, coffee shops, you can go fishing (I don't do this, but if fishing or boating is something you enjoy, then, by all means, go for it!), stores to shop in, pizza places, and most importantly - you're right next to one of the most BEAUTIFUL lakes ever - Lake Superior! There are miles and miles of walking trails around Lake Superior. It's a truly fantastic sight to see. (I attached one of the pics I've taken up there before to this response! So check it out!) And another thing to consider is that you've gotten ALL of your tuition covered for UMD, so you might as well just go there. The last thing you want to do in this economy is get youself into debt (or MORE debt, if you already are in a bit of it from your previous schoolings). That's an amazing offer, and you should go for it! I hope this has helped you. If you want any more advice, or if you have any other questions about Minnesota/Duluth/Minneapolis - don't hesitate to add me as a friend & let me know how the school is going for you! (If you decide to go!) Good luck with making your decision!

hello and wow...its really great coincidence...its nice meeting you! thanks for your long and informative response....it was every bit helpful thanx.,,..for the congrats...i am happy to have got the admit into UMD it seems like a very beautiful and interesting place.....i am excited to be so close to ice and snow........it looks so beautiful in pictures and movies.....i have seen Duluth pics...also the one that you have attaches...it chilling beautiful... i know umn, twin cities it a good one....but i though i had less chances of getting into it, so, i opted for Duluth campus. and let me tell you....i love pizzas(and in particular, pizza hut)....i am happy that you mentioned there are pizza outlets there. well, i am in no debt right now, but i don't want to burden my parents any more.....not that they wont pay for me....but i'd like to do something on my own now. i'll most probably go for UMD.......and i'll msg with more questions, if any. by the way, how is it in fall there?.....i'll be coming there in fall and i hope i wont have to face the cold as soon as i come there. Have a nice day.

another Duluth pic! - Here's another Duluth pic that I took about a year ago. Duluth (especially in the "down town" area by the lake) has some SERIOUSLY awesome trails to walk, run or bike on, and it's just an amazing place to sight-see. I would suggest it to ANYONE.
Oh - and here's another pic I took of a trail on Lake Superior, if you're interested in it. I'm just trying to give you an idea of what to expect. It's truly gorgeous!

I'm in Florida, too, but I have to say go with the best deal financially. There is a lot of joblessness down here and why work when another...equally good...univeristy is willing to give you full tuition plus expenses PLUS health insurance. That alone is a very valuable perk since most part time positions don't offer health benefits and you don't want to be working full time while earning your Masters. Minnesota might be colder in the winter but I'm certain all of the buildings on campus have heat so don't let the weather sway you.

hello there, thanks for your honest response. i was also thinking about the aid....and moreover the economy is down...so, its difficult to get jobs. and yes, if i try to work more, i might not be able to do well in master......after all that's why i am coming there...right?......and health insurance added definitely makes UMD a better option. and if its only about the cold winters, i'll manage....like many others do. in fact, i cant tell you how excited i am to be so close to ice and snow.....it looks beautiful in pictures and movies... thanks again....have a nice day.

Minnesota is very cold and Florida is very hot, make sure you add this into your equation. I would go with Minnesota if I could stand the weather, it provides the most financial help. But I don't know which school has the best computer science department.

You would probably like the climate in Florida better but the economy is so dismal. Minnesota is very cold in the winter but if you have full tuition with expenses, choose that one. The people there are very, very nice and I think you'll like it there. Plus, you have a family member there and that's a big plus! Congratulations on your graduation and your impending Masters!!!

exactly......the economy is so bad and it might be difficult for me if i couldn't find a part-time job in Florida. so, i might be going for UMD.....but i haven't decided yet. i am happy about what you said about the people in Minnesota.....that's really nice.....i think the university people are also very friendly.....they have been in constant contact and also asked me to keep in touch... Thank You. Have a nice day!

Hello my friend uniquestar Ji, I could only tell that Florida area is better for living as I lived for six months in 2003. However, I would forward your problem of choosing correct place to my Son and his wife who were associated with US for decade. No sooner, I get any feed back, I will come back to you. May god bless You and have a great time.
