getting caught up on things is discusiing things that could not hurt someone. Gossiping is when you talk about someone in a negative behavior and it can hurt them.

When you start talking bad about people or start talking about rumors with no relevance to your own life - then you're gossiping. There's also a difference in tone, usually. People who gossip are usually doing so in a 'catty' way - and in a way that's meant to be condescending towards others. There's a difference in chit-chatting and gossiping about someone. For example, chit-chatting is usually harmless, isn't meant to hurt anyone's feelings or feel better about oneself - and isn't also discussing something that MAY or MAY NOT be true. When you're gossiping, you're usually taking a small rumor way out of porportion by assuming that it's the truth - and you're usually trying to be mean. I think there's a rather huge difference.
