Know yourself

Can this incessant search, this longing, give us the extraordinary sense of reality, that creative being which comes when we really understand ourselves? Does self knowledge come trough search, through following someone else, trough belonging to any particular organization, trough reading books, and so on? After all, that's the man issue, is it not? That as long as I do not understand myself, I have no basis for thought, and all my search will be in vain. I can escape into illusion, I can run away from contention, strife, struggle, I can worship another, I can look for my salvation trough somebody elese. But as long as I'm ignorant of myself, as long as I'm unaware of the total process of myself, I have no basis thought, for affection, for action, but that's the last thing we want: to know ourselves. Surely that is the only foundation on which we can build. But before we can build, before we can transform, before we can condemn or destroy, we must know that which we are. So to go out seeking, changing teachers, gurus, practising yoga breathing, performing rituals, following masters and all the rest of it, is utterly useless, is it not? It has no meaning even though the very people whom we follow may say; Study yourself. Because what we are the world is. If we are petty, jealous, vain, greedy that is what we create about us, that is the society in which we live.

If you do not know or understand yourself how do you expect others to know or understand you? Just as if you do not like yourself, how can you expect others to like you?
You MUST Understand yourself, understand what makes you "tick",understand your needs and desires, before you can truly function. You must also know what is important to you. What are your true goals in life. Not just what are you going to do in the next few months, but lifetime goals.
Education is the first step. The more you know, the better prepared you are for all aspects of life, both spiritually and secularly. You can read or talk to folks, but I would put more emphasis on reading.
Long walks out in a quiet space in nature, is also good for the soul.

yes i think it's very important to know yourself
because that makes who you are in the
eyes of other people..ü and if you don't know yourself,
then who else knows?
but having to know yourself is a great advantage..
you know your strengths and weaknesses and in that case you'll be
able to know your field and make more right and justified
decisions..ü
just my opinion!!ü

Wow that's a pretty deep thought.
just reading it made my head spin...
well yeah I do think knowing urself is important. If a person is not able to understand himself how does he expect to make sense out of nething that around him. Be it people or thing.
But there r times when a person is really not aware of what he is capable of achieving or doing till the time he is faced with certain situation...For eg lets take me...I m not at all into poetry or literature and stuff...so i always considered myself as a very non-poetic person...but then few months back i fell in love and believe me or not i have written such wonderful poems that now my friends ask me to keep wiritng more poems (some for their boyfriend's as well!!!) and get them published!!! Leave them i surprised myself the most!!!
So yeah u should know urself...but till u dont come face to face with a situation certain potential remains untapped...
