For me, I go for Ubuntu. Every people has its own flavors of their best Linux distribution. Why Ubuntu? Because that was the first ever Linux system that I have used and really fell in love with the operating system. I'm not saying that Fedora, Suse, Debian, Red Hat is not good, its just that we have our taste. That's it!

Redhat is much stable. It can be used in servers. Ubuntu fits the laptops much better. If you uses Linux in your laptop, you'd better choose Ubuntu. Debian is a little hard for the beginner to use. I use Fedora in my computer. I like it. If you prefer to operate in command lines, they're almost the same.

I see no reason for Redhat. It's commercial distro and why should we pay for having a linux? If you really want to have RedHat, take Fedora and if you feel that you lack something because it's free version of RedHat as I felt when I tried it. It lacks a bunch of closed source stuff like media codecs. I've been using Ubuntu for few years and it had worked well. I know that there are many applications packed only in RPM packages and not in DEBs but nowadays the applications you need should be in Ubuntu's own APT archives or at least uploaded on a web server and packed in DEB. RPM = RedHat Package Manager = the name of the tool and the extension of the packages that can be installed using this tool. These packages are used to pack software for RedHat based distros, like Fedora DEB = the package format Debian package manager (=dpkg) uses, these packages are used to pack software for Debian based distros like Ubuntu APT = Advanced Package Tool = the tool developed by Debian to help users to install the software they want and all the libraries it requires to be run (=depedencies).
