Has your pet ever worn an E collar?

I just had my chihuahua neutered, and they wanted him to wear an E Collar so he would not lick his stitches. The first 12 hours or so, I did not think I would be able to keep it on him. He would take his back paws and push it off his head. I could not get it on tight enough to keep it on. But I went to PetSmart and bought a smaller one, and he adapted quite quickly to it. He has had it on now for 8 days, and has 2 more days to go before he gets his stitches out at the Vet's office. Has your pet worn the E Collar, and did you have problems with it?

LOL, try having a cat with an E collar! We could only keep it on for about 5 days before we had to take it off of her. She did get used to it somewhat, but we could tell she was not happy about it. Also, we had to keep her inside, and she is an indoor/outdoor cat who loves her outside time. That is also where she goes to the bathroom. So you can see the dilemma here. :)

I have had both my dogs wear a collar. It was too big for them but we managed to adapt it for them. My female would always lower her head with it and then ram it into the ground. Not good. But she adjusted with it eventually. She wore hers because the stitches from her spaying had resurfaced and was irritating her. My male wore one when he got into a fight with another papillon and ended up getting bitten. So we made him wear it so he would not undress the badages.

My dog would ram his collar into the ground, too. He would ram it against the doorframe sometimes, too. I felt so sorry for him. He adjusted the best he could, but it was awkward for him. But I will say that the collar serves it's purpose. They absolutely cannot get to those places, but they also can't scratch their ears! lol. Thanks for responding!

when my lurcher had a cut on his side, he was sent home with one of those to stop him pulling the dressing off (they tried glue, stitches and staples, but all of them would come apart, so it had to be left open but dressed to heal)
and he was miserable in the collar, but without he'd pull the dressing off.
so we put him in a t shirt, and tied it at his waist so he couldn't get at it.
and he was fine. and he loved wearing the t shirt. he's a strange little dog, if we put clothes on him he's all proud of himself and smug.

That sounds cute! I can just see him strutting his stuff with his clothes on! I wish I had thought about just putting a shirt on mine. I did take some stretchy t-shirt material and tried to make a diaper out of it. When I pinned it on him, the little houdini was out of it in 2 seconds flat. And he absolutely would not leave the stitches alone. So that's when I had to get the new collar. I feel like I have been torturing the poor baby with that collar, though he really has adjusted to it fine now. I dislike it more than he does! Thank goodness it comes off tomorrow. Thank you for responding!

I have never heard of an E collar, I've heard of the coned collar. My dog was neutered about 6 weeks ago. The vet said if he licked his incision I may need to put his cone on him. We had no issues with him. We caught him the few times he licked his stitches and got him to stop. His stitches disintegrated so we didn't have to take him back to the vet to have them removed. He's much calmer now.

Yes, my youngest dog wore an E collar after she broke her leg, so she wouldn't chew off the bandage. I had purchased her in July of last year, only had her a few days, and she broke her leg. Needless to say, I took to the emergency hospital, and lucky for both me and her, she didnt break it where she had to have surgery. That worried me a lot. The poor thing was in misery, and she hated the E collar, but if I didm't put it on her, she would start chewing the bandage off in the middle of the night, when I wouldn't be awake to observe her. She fought me every time I tried to put the E collar on, and I really didn't blame her, as it sure did look uncomfortable.

Your poor baby! I hope she recovered well from the broken leg. I agree that the E collar looks very uncomfortable. My dog bumps into doors, etc sometimes because it sticks out and gets in the way. I am glad that he could eat and drink OK with it. I am thankful that this time tomorrow he won't have it on anymore. Thanks for your response! (I love your name)
