Recently, there is a group that is working hard to save Pasig River and trying their best to restore its cleanliness and beauty. We all know that there are a lot of people living beside it and throwing their waste at the river without any concern of their health.
While there are now plans to relocate the squatters, they are fast growing and it seems that they are uncontrollable.
After all these times, do you think there is still a chance for Pasig River? What do you think is the best solution, and how can you help?

I think everyone should be conscious control of their own, not just the rubbish thrown into the river, then natural to maintain clean water. In our country, there is a Suzhou Creek, is the case, because many people are throwing garbage into the river, as well as industrial wastewater, the river has become very had, as long as ten years. In Today, the active management of the country, it gradually raise the quality, the river has finally returned to the original style.

I don't think there is a chance. Those squatters living along the river have no idea what they are doing with their lives and their children. They'll just throw their garbage anytime and anywhere. Squatters should have proper location and proper awareness with regards to garbage. They should not only relocate but give proper education.

How true, simple relocation is not enough. Just like giving people fish or vegetables will only temporarily alleviate a hunger problem, but teaching someone to fish or grow their own food - sustainably will solve the problem.

Very well said. I am not angry with those squatters ok. It's just every time I see them, they seem contented with their lives. Having drink early in the morning, let their children walking around without shirt on, and doing nothing at all and yet asking for something that they do not even work hard for.

Not only are there 10,000 plus families but there are many factories who are using the river as a waste system. There hast to be some kind of regulations set up for factories and there has to be some kind of aid for those families, giving them an alternative.
Sinc 1989 efforts have been afoot - or um - astream to rehabilitate this River, but they have had to contend with centuries of abuse and neglect. I know Denmark is part of the efforts and there are some great scientists on their team - they helped with a project in Cape Verde, Africa.
I'm not sure if it will be, but I think chances are high if the plans for rehabilitation including relocation of squatters is fully implemented. The Pasig river is a vital resource and ecosystem.

On an individual basis, I think everyone can help by not contributing mroe to the waste put in there.

Passing by and looking at it everyday... One thing is for sure, there is no chance for it to be cleaned anymore. I would really love to see the old Pasig River.

Me too. Too bad our ancestors / ascendants didn't take good care of this once magnificent river for us. Imagine what would Pasig river look like after five years, with its current state, I think it will become a world record holder, as the largest sewer river in the world.

Yes, I think there's still a chance to save the Pasig River. My suggestion is simple, but, very very hard to accomplish. Saving it all starts with the people around it. But then again, I believe it's very hard to achieve the cooperation of those people living there.

we can if only the law is implemented. The problem with us is we have more than enough laws but we lack the will to have it implemented. If everyone is aware, observe and respect our laws then it's not mission impossible to revive ilog pasig. There has been several attempts to revive the dying river but everyone failed because the solution is in the grassroots. The main problem is the uncontrolled dumping of waste to the river. Take out those who dumps in the river and you'll get a clean river. It's not impossible to revive the river but it would certainly take a lot of time and money to do it. Our government has to take away the squatters first, the factories second and have a decent water treatment plant for all the waste water from the metro to pass through it before it's dumped into the river. But this will take political will and a lot of money. But as they say if there's a will there's a way.

Hi fatherblogger!
I do believe that Pasig River could still be restored but it will take a lot of works and discipline. If we could look in the past, there were so many projects already that was launched to clean this river but after a few years they just disappear.
First of all, there should be a tough mandate or law to finally stop the continuous degradation of Pasig River. We should identify and stop those things that continuously making the river dirty and established programs to keep them away from doing this.
To sum it up, we need a rigorous and continuous program to restore this historical river.

I think we can, as to the past state the government should do something in the dredging and cleaning of floating garbage, the present state will be the cooperation of all us to be educated on proper garbage handling, the future state depends on a strong will to apply these knowledge. Or else the problem will recur and the effort and money spend is deem useless.
Yes, it is really appalling that our country is still not employing this regulation, our country is one of the dirtiest of waterways second to india. LOL.
Progress of a country can also be portrayed thru the cleanliness of its surroundings.
Thanks happy my lotting.

We should be optimistic about it. It is nice to know that some groups are still concern in cleaning the Pasig River. We don't have to wait for the government to act on this matter because somehow there is a possibility that it won't be implemented.
We could also support by donating via our cellphone, whether you are GLOBE or SMART subscriber.
Our participation is very important, we should act now before it's too late.

I belive there is a chance for Pasig to be clean again if the people, especially the residents near Pasig, would cooperate with the organizations trying to save Pasig river. They should stop throwing their garbage to the river because it adds pollution.

As long as there are informal settlers around the river, I doubt if it will be clean once again.
Well the government might have lots of decent projects to clean the river but I doubt if it would be as clean as it used to be. Maybe the odor will gone and the garbage as well but to be clean as it was in the 50's is a very good example of a day-dreaming. It wont happen..

Not now, but I hope someday Pasig River would be cleaner than the present condition of the river. If more organizations will help, Pasig river will be cleaner, not now but someday soon.

Definitely! Yes there are lots of possibilities that Pasig River could still be restored. Provided if there will be discipline among people living with in the area. If only the slums could be removed and be relocated in other place then there is a big chance because they are one factor that makes it unclean. Another possibilty of Pasig River rehabilitation is to maintain people who will secure the cleanliness of the river plus providing funds coming from the government for maintaining people and materials that will be use in providing its continous cleanliness. Lastly, a random check should be needed if the guidelines provided by the government in maintaining the Pasig River is being followed.

I still believe that Pasig river would be restored to its former beauty. Thanks to those who are doing their best to restore this historical river, our next generation of children will benefit from this heroic act. I just hope that once this river had been restored the people would maintain and protect this beautiful river.

For as long as there are still persons that are doing something to restore something there will always be hope that it may be restored. As to when it will be realized is something that is not answerable right now.
Pasig River has deteriorated rapidly at the turn of industrialization of Manila and its vicinity. And for almost a century this has been neglected by many. Only very recently has this movement to restore Pasig River came up and so far their efforts is not yet sufficient as of today. There are lots of things to do along the way that would need relocation of squatters along the river and also the constant cleaning of the river is a tasks that is something they should do.

Hello friend. I think that anything is possible if the local government is determined to help clean the river and make some policies so that the residents will take good care of the river from which they drink and use the water.

With all of those squatters Living next to the Pasig, I believe there's a little chance of that. I mean with out Discipline, no matter how many times you cleaned up the damn river, it will always get dirty and polluted. luckily, there's still fishes living in that River, the janitor Fish that is. but there's hope, unfortunately there is no concrete solution except for people to discipline themselves into throwing garbage into proper cans.

They say, "habang buhay, may pag-asa" (while there is life, there's hope). But for Pasig River to be clean again, there should be "will" - if there's a will, there's a way, right?
As some of the previous responders have expounded, as long as there are people willing to do something for the river, there's a chance to make it clean again. There are lots of things to be done though and here are some of my thoughts:
1) Relocating the squatters and other legitimate residents living along the riverbanks. That is to make sure that no one is throwing all sorts of household garbage in the river.
2) All factories and any business establishment should be distanced away from the river bank. It is easier for our in-charge government agencies to monitor if these establishments are not polluting our rivers if they are away from the bank.
3) Higher penalties for polluting the river and full, strict implementation of environmental laws.
With those in place, I don't see any reason why Pasig River can't be cleaner than what it is today.

i think that there will be a super slight chance of the Pasig River being cleaned..because a lot of people still throw their wastes on the river..and if it will be cleaned, it can't be as clean as before..ü the people living nearby should cooperate..ü
