So, what is the purpose of engage? Why not go straight to official marriage? If you really love that person, and you have the thought of getting married, why not go for the marriage?

to share the habbits you have in common.and if you find you cannot get along with each other when you have already married,it will be so bad.

"Getting engaged" in my view of things is like a formal announcement to everyone that, depending on how long it takes for one to plan their wedding, there will indeed be a wedding taking place. Also during this stage of the relationship, it gives the couple a chance to see if in fact they are really ready to go to the next step of the relationship scale and take those vows of marriage.
Some use the time in between planning their wedding, to see if they can live with each other, let any hidden secrets to come out (if there are any), and in general just to be sure they hold the kind of love for each other that is required to hold a marriage together.
To me jumping right into a marriage without giving each other time to see how it could go before hand, is just well stupid. Love is great, but also blinding. How a person is during the dating process, could all change once the couple is married, I mean really not all dating couples live together, or share every moment of their lives together. So is good to allow that extra time to let things sink in.
