By- laws suck...

I have 4 dogs in my house right now. I have had them for about 3 years now. We got our first about five years ago and our last came 3 years ago. The last two that came we could not register with the town. The reasons were that the first one was a dog we rescued that the owners had abandoned. The second was a show dog and was on the circut as a show dog. The last by-law officer knew about our dogs and was trying to investigate the owners that left the one dog. Well since then the by-law officer has passed away and apparently a new by-law came into affect stating that we can only own two dogs. Now they want us to give up two of our precious dogs. I am so pissed. I can prove that we had the dogs before the law came into effect but they say that does not matter because we have not had them registered. We are willing to registar them but they will not let us. It is a long heartbreaking story and I am so upset that I may have to get rid of part of our family.

I would think there some be some kind of loophole that your dogs were grandfathered in. Depending on where you live, I think you can take to court or request some kind of hearing for an appeal. Thatw ay you can get your dogs registered legally.

I think that we are going to have to try to fight this in court and try to win, It is just going to be hard.

Good luck. I do hope you will win. There is no need to see a couple dogs put down when someone is willing to take care of them.

I just wanted to let you know that we fought the town and we won. We now have all 4 dogs here legally and registered. Thanks for your support.

I think that part of it is so that they do not have hoarders. But it is just a real hassle.

Which dogs can you register since you have four of them? Also is there a way you can move to another place that would allow you to have four dogs. here is the thing Laws are Laws and whether one by-law officer choose to let it slip this one is not and if it is because you are under a grandfather clause then since you knew that you couldn't register the dogs you should have had the last by law officer draw up something official incase something would have happen that he was no longer the by law officer and then you could have avoided this. I know hind site is always 20-20 because we don't expect certian things to happen .. I'm sorry for your situation. maybe you can try and get a special type of license or something to be able to keep all of your dogs. I'm sorry I come from the states so I'm not very familiar with canadian law.

I would think there is some kind of loophole for you to be "grandfathered" in. I live in a condominium complex and any changes they make to our by-laws regaurding pets is as of that time. If you'd only be in violation when they make the new by-law you're "grandfathered in." Also, I would think there may be a statute of limitations so to speak. If they wait years and years aposed telling you as soon as they see you have a new dog you can only have X number of dogs it's there' problem not yours. Also, they should, by law be required to notify you of the change of the by-law at the time the change is made, at least that's the rule here. If they really push for you to get rid of 2 of your dogs I'd consult with a lawyer on what your rights are. Its not fair for them to just make up a new rule and ask you yo get rid of 2 "family members."

There is a grandfather clause but because we could not register them at the time they say we can't now. I am at a loss. No one wants to help us. We live in a very small town and we do not have a lot of money.
