Do you think that dogs should wear the leash when they go out?

I start to think that it's better for the dogs to war the leash when they go out, especially the big size dogs. Last night when my son and I went out, I saw a very huge German shepherd and I felt so scared because there was no leash of it. And we lived in the downtown. It is absolutely dangerous in my opinion.

In my opinion, they should be on a leash whenever they are not in their home. My dog is never allowed to run loose. And, no, it's not okay to let a dog run loose in the country. In my opinion, it's worse than letting them run loose in a city. In town, if you dog attacks someone they can get help fairly quickly. In rural areas a dog attack is a lot more likely to be fatal.

It is a law that All dogs have to be on a leash here and I agree. Why? Not every dog is friendly and not every person likes dogs. I never feel comfortable around dogs. My mom told me when I was young hat my dad was bitten by a dog so I hated them ever since. so when I a dog is unleashed I assume he will bite . I just stop until its owner gets it away from me. They all say , he won't bite but I always think that bullsh!t. he Will bite.I am nice but there ar others who would try to hurt the dog. That's wrong. Ironically, I like to see the dogs at the dog show. i lke to see all the different breeds but it is on t.v. and they all are leashed.

I agree that dogs should have a leash on when the owners take them out for walks, both for their safety and of the people around them. No matter how tame a dog may be, the owner can not assume that he will be harmless all the time. You can never know what can trigger a dog to attack someone or even injure someone although with playful intentions only. Also city dogs are at risk to get hit by cars so the leash is also their protection so that the owners can steer them out of harm's way

Big dogs can be very scary. Usually children are the dog bite victims as they are overly friendly toward dogs and are (unfortunately) at the face level of the dog. That could be why many children are bitten on the face and hands. In our country there are many children who become dog bite victims. It's such a sad thing. In the US, there are mandatory dog leash laws for big and small dogs. Still, I have seen dogs wandering our neighborhoods. In our other home, I would often see a Rottweiler wandering around our front yard. That was a very scary experience. I have taught my daughter that all dogs are 'stranger dogs' and not to be talked to. She understands and now delights in pointing out 'stranger dogs' and saying, 'We don't talk to them!' Preschool kids understand life in their own terms. And, yes, I do agree. Big dogs should be on a leash. It's dangerous to allow otherwise.

I also found that dogs like to pick on little children. When my child was very little, the dogs often barked and it also made me scared.

Hi there you less. I do agree that dogs should be kept on a leash when their owner are walking them on the street, but i agree that it would be o.k. to let them loose when they are in a special designed area for animals; (in my country we have some sort of mini green areas, where they are free to roam, play and whatever within a fence designated area) - now i know that the zones i am talking about are not to well respected, and there are stray dogs, and the law should be better implemented, but hey, at least it's a start.

When we had a dog at home, if we just put her out for a while to do her business on her own, we put her on a leash that was attached to a tree infront of the house, and only extended to the end of the drive way so she had room to run and play, but would not get in the way of passing cars. When we took her for a walk, we had a leash that would let her walk about four feet infront of us, with a little room to play, but we kept a hold of her the whole time.

I think it is a must that your dog should always wear a leash when going out. It can be a threat to young kids or other people. If your dog is calm and friendly he can be run over by a car or attacked by another animal. So I think it is a must that a dog should always wear a leash when they are out.

I do think if you are walking the dog or taking the dog out to use the bathroom that you should put it on a leash. That way it will keep it from running off or into the road and keep it from running up to people that might be scared of it. Now, if you have a fenced in back yard I think it's fine to just let it run in the fenced in area.

Absolutely, the probability of your dog hurting another dog or worst another person is high especially for big dogs that are allowed to roam around without a leash. It kinda shows how irresponsible their owners are. How many people have been hurt, maimed or killed just because of dogs left hanging around by their owners. Dogs are territorial and people who accidentally entered their virtual domain are definitely in high danger.

It depends on the situation. My parents own about 200 acres so when we let are dogs out or take them for walks we rarely use the leash because no one is around. But in a crowded area that is different. However, it depends on the dog. Did the dog stay by the owners side? Some people train their dogs really well so they don't need a leash anymore because they are very obedient and will not disobey their owner or attack people. Just because a dog is big does not mean that it is mean. I have met some pretty viscious smaller dogs and I have met some very gentle large dogs. But I volunteer at a dog shelter and working with dogs has taught me a lot about them. If I did not know so much about dogs it might bother me more but most of the German shepherds I have come in contact with are extremely obedient, they will only attack if their owner is being attacked. Of course there are some nasty German shepherds out there too but it is all in their upbringing. If they are trained correctly, unless their is something wrong with them than they are not a threat to anyone.

In fact I also like dogs and I had a big dog before. I always gave it leash when we went out. Although I knew he was tame and would not attack anybody, but I didn't want others to be scared anyway.

I think that there is a time and place to have your dog off leash. I have two little dogs and they go off leash in my yard. They do not leave my yard and I am out there with them. But my large dog would not be off leash unless my daughter takes him out to the farmer's fields. You have to be responsible for your pets and if this is what happened to you then the owners were not responsible.

I agree with you. I live in the country and my dog runs free. I have had him for about 4yrs. He has never bitten anyone and was raised with small kids. I wouldn't have a dog that shows agression.I have grandkids and Great grandbabies and they are more important to me than dogs. I live on a main highway and People abandon a lot of strays to my house. Some have shown aggression.I have had to give away several litters because of it. I have had to be responsible for others pets and find them good homes.

Nope, I don't think a dog should wear anything. They should be free and if your dog is leashed most of the time, then only they become angry and start being wild when unleashed! Just like small children!

I know dogs need the freedom, but no matter what, human beings should be much more important, right? If somebody doesn't want to leash a dog, then please raise the dog outside of the city.

Well I dont want to offend you but how would you feel if you or your child got bit? Theres been plenty of times when a dog that is usually calm goes totally crazy for no reason and someone ends up getting hurt all because of a leash. Happy MyLotting!

Yeah you are right about that. Dog owners should be responsible enough to take care of their dogs especially if the dog they own is known to be aggressive like German Sheperds. I know many are tamed but you wouldn't know when they are with strangers. Some animals may misinterpret actions made by strangers and become suddenly aggressive towards them.

Hello, youless. Dogs should be walked with leashes, not because they are dangerous nor anything like that. Only for the fact that, if they are not on a leash, they will just go and dirty the streets, dirty the places in front your house, and sometimes their owner won't be seeing, so nobody will clean and it will be there, until the house owner notices it. And, of course, there are dogs who would fight with each other if both of them walked without leashes. Respectfully, Munhozmib.

Yes...for their own safety and that of others ....the dog needs a leash when out. My daughters dog was recently hit by a car when her uncle took the dog for a walk without a leash. The dog did not know to stop at the "don't walk" light and ran right in front of the traffic. On the flip side...dogs can get worked up by other dogs and random things and act out. They don't know any better. Their owners should know better than to take them out without a leash...it is irresponsible . Most places have leash laws.

Yes, I think that not only is it safer for people walking around on the street, but it's also safer for the dog. Even a well trained dog might slip up and go to chase a small animal, like a squirrel. The dog unleashed can run into the street and get hit by a car. I think when walking a dog, keeping it on a leash is the responsible thing to do.

I think all dogs should be kept on a lead even if the dog is a friendly dog.Not everyone likes dogs alot of people are scared of all sizes and breeds of dogs.I have three dogs and the only time they are off alead is when they are on my property where they can not get out as they are enclosed by a six foot fence. There should be a law against them being off a lead as a lot of dogs are known for causing road accidents as well.

i think that definetly depends on the dog. anything over 8 lbs. may scare someone. but if its under 8lbs. and is very well trained than it should be able to hande the temptations. and is fine to let off the leash. but if over 8 lbs. it shouldnt be let off the leash no matter what. because people may be scared and might call an authority.

But sometimes small dogs can also bite people. If you ever go to the hospital, you will see some people need to get the shot after being bitten by dogs.
