Yesterday there was some weird argument in this matter. I was talking with some older people and and telling that I am not happy with the present job as the earning is too less. I think I deserve more as my friends from same batch and college are getting much more in this same company!Just because they joined here in 2007 or 2008 and I joined in 2006. They used to offer less salary at that point! But mine ha snot increased much also. So I think i should change it as early as the market is up!
I got a weird notion from that person. She told that her father has taught her to be happy with what we have. We should not ask fro more as there are many poor people. I am not telling that there are poor, but when I am not getting what I am deserving, I think there are are enough reason to be not contended. She protested my view! And she thinks I should manage with this money and save most part and also lead a life very simple ( I thinks he wanted to say like poor people). But I never indulge in luxury. I was very hurt at this comment.I want opinion from all ages here. Is it wrong when you want to earn more as you are not getting what you deserve?

I don't think it's wrong for wanting more than what we have now, I think it's a natural human desire. Besides, things has change so much these days that we can no longer root on the same spot. I always annoyed whenever I have to listen to lecture from the elders that I should be satisfied with my salary. In their days, they only earn 1/4 of what I earn now but they still managed. It make me want to reply (which I didn't or I'll be call rude), "grandpa, you can buy a cup of coffee for $0.10 in your days but it cost at least $1.00 now"
Your father is right that there is more poor people and we should be thankful of our life. I am thankful but I don't intend to stay the same. I want to change myself. i call that motivating myself and I don't think it's wrong.

I think everybody has a different opinions about it. As to me, the money isn't the most important. When you earn a lot, sometimes it will be a great pressure and you hardly have your own time to relax or even take a break. On the other hand, you are already very lucky than many people. As some of them lose jobs in the recession.
I love China

Why did you feel hurt from her comment? I mean every one has their own life and everyone thinks different. I mean if we all start thinking about poor people and all then why shouldn't those Tata, Birla nd Bill Gates is thinking about it?
It should be their prime concerne t make contribution towards the poor people and belive me that they are donating money to NGOs. So, in a way they are playing their part but they aren't happy with their income but they want to earn more n more.
So, the point here is that we shouldn't think that since there are poor people in this world, we should also live like them. The best way of doing it that earn money, be strong and then start working for them. I mean what are they going to get if we live like them even if we hae potentials of doing more and more!

Hello friend,
there's nothing wrong in expecting more in terms of compensation for your work. However, you have to take into consideration the changing market trends. Still, I do believe that seniority has to be respected at workplace. I would like to know which company you work for.

Hi subha.. I don't know that in which company you are working but it is always seen that when latter batches are offered more salary then the senior employees also get a salary hike before the next batch joins in the company. It is most of the companies policy that the senior employees should get at least what the freshers get.
I would not say that wishing more money is bad if you deserve it. But wishing more and more money is bad. There are some people who are never satisfied with their earnings, they always want more and more. That is surely bad thing.

Personally I feel that there is nothing wrong with wanting more like this, as where I work I just celebrated 3 yrs. of Employment, and I am earning what people coming in earn after a yr. Sometimes I think it is just finding a way to approach them with these thoughts without causing some problems as well. Where I work they request if you want a raise over what you are earning Write them a letter and they will look it over, and then get back with you if they can do it, or what they can give you as well. So this could be a thought with your job as well.

See, its you who thinks you deserve it. May be those who evaluate your work and performance do not agree with you..!
You joining in 2006 may have given you less starting salary than your friends who joined in 2007, 2008, but as of now, you are 1 and 2 year senior than than them and have an experience of about 3 yrs as of now, this should give you an added advantage. But now that you still are being paid less, I think you need to think about this. It may be your performance (which you say is good enough to be paid handsomely) or may be you should try at some different Company. A change in the company will definitely give you a noticable salary hike. You can try this once the market becomes stable!
What the other user commented about your post is also not totally wrong. One should indeed be happy with whatever he has. But that does not mean one should stop aspiring for more. If this happens, one can never progress. Don't be hurt by that comment, that's his/her personal opinion or experience.
One more thing I would like to suggest, never compare yourself with anybody else, apply this rule in every aspect of your life. Everyone is on a different scale. Money and Success doesn't come to everybody at the same rate or at the same time. If you don;t have this attitude, then you'll have to suffer a lot of pain.

First of all you have got wrong info. we joined the first job in same yr, same day same company. Then I joined the current job in 2006 and they have joined this in 2007 or 2008. So they have exactly same exp as mine. They started getting about 45% more salary than me when they joined. I asked the same to my manager. They said it is recruitment drive and so company is offering them so much. But our salary( who joined earlier) will be taken care in next appraisal. But it was never taken care. I think You have got a wrong impression that I do not deserve or poor performer. i have got rating 1 and despite that getting poor salary even when they say I am critical resource.

Ohh, sorry for the misconception!!
My point is, if you are a good performer (which even I know now you are), you change the company you work for.
The moment you talk about this to your officials, they may propose a pay hike for you. Even if this does not happen, your new employers will definitely give you a good hike.
Good Luck.

Hello there!
Of course you should be happy with what you have. But being happy with what you have doesn't mean you must not want anything more. You must want to earn more, specially if you believe you deserve it. There is a big difference in being happy with what you earn and being conformed with what you earn. You earn some money, you must be happy to be earning it. But you can earn more. You can earn much more. The objectives are what keep us growing, along with the problems.
Before fighting for what you want, be happy with what you have. But know that you can have even more.
Respectfully,
Munhozmib.

Hi there.
I disagree with what you said. Being happy with what you want doesn't mean you have to be conformed with your situation. You can be happy with yourself, but, you know, we all have defects. Then, even though you are happy, you can try to change yourself so you can avoid making mistakes. There is no problem in that.

According to the market and your job profile you need to change, some times you don't understand what are the situations happenings behind of you but you need to understand that is the only way, Changing the job is difficult because you have been doing one process, anyhow some times you need to change for a high salary my friend.

if you feel that you are worth earning more then go ahead..simply taking opinion from others might confuse you..trust your instincts and go by it..nobody other than you can be in a better position to analyze you..you are the master and you have to make out a right choice..

there nothing wrong from aspiring to earn more than others. Of course not in the sense of greediness but in the sense of making much from what you deserve. If you work hard you earn much. Looking for a sideline money techniques is one on how to earn extra money. however you should not leave your current position and look for another, only if you know that you will earn more than that of now.

well everyone has a different opinion if you feel you are not being paid fairly you have the right to ask for a raise to be equal with others but whether you get the raise or not is an entirely different matter.

Well it seems that you was hired at a time when wages was not as much as they are now for newer people. No I odn't think it is fair that they get more, if, youa are doing the same thing as they are. But I can also tell you that in these times, if things are as bad where you are as where we live in the USA, be thankful you have a job.
You know at one time we had about 7 General Motors Plants in this area, they are all gone overseas and to Mexico now, and there are a lot of unemployed people here now. You know what got them unemployed. The fact that they was never satisfied with what they was being paid and always wanted more. They put themselves out of a job.
While I think we should all strive for the best that we can do, we also don't want to be so greedy that we put ourselves out of a job over wanting more than the company is willing to pay. Don't you get annual increases in pay? I think you should work hard and let them see that you are a good asset to the company. That you are there every work day, and that you do your job. Some times we think we deserve more when in fact the company don't think that way. What I think these elderly people was telling you was, you have a job, be lucky that you do, be content that you have enough to survive on,and don't waste it. We never know what is down the line for us. You could talk to your boss and ask why people that hired in after you was paid more money, and why you aren't being paid same as them. I am sure you do a good job and work hard, but unfortunately when we work for someone else we either take what they are willing to pay or we look somewhere else.

I don't think your friend meant it the way you took it but no..you are not wrong to want to be paid more. I think you should talk to your boss. The recession is holding a lot of bosses from giving raises but it never hurts to ask. You definitely should be making more than those that joined the company after you.

I think this is really weird. I think you are right in your decision of looking for a better paying company for the work you do. I seriously beleive in your thoughts and even I am looking for a change in job just for the reason of salary.

No, you have the right to fight for it. If you think that you should earn more, you should earn more, period, end of the discussion. You should take on action to fight for what you worth. Not people telling you how much you are worth. We need incentives to fight for what we are pursuing now. Not depending on what other people say. We have the right to express how much we really worth.

Hi subha,
My point is you should get as per your capacity and calibre. None would be happy in an ideal condition to be underpaid. Say whatsoever you wish, if I feel I am not getting as per my labour and quality there should not arise any question to remain there. There are different avenues where you would be paid up to your expectation.
I am all voice with you.
