Owning Cell phones

It has become a symbol of pride to own a cell phone these days. There are different brands displayed in most outlets, many of them with very high price tags.Do we really need to possess those expensive handsets when it is only needed to buy for oneself an instrument that should really serve the purpose.?An expensive handset has become synonymous with one's status eh!

The same point has been nagging my mind since I bought my recent 'Nokia Music express' touch pad phone which is quite expensive. But I can feel that I have a made wise decision by making my choice as a businessman who relies on text messages and Emails most of the time. This particular phone makes my sending the text messages much easier with the bold and clear touch pad.I am able to log on to my mails as I am on the move.I just can plug it on when I go for my morning walks with the great music experience.Well I am beginning to understand the quality means money.

It does not matter what others think. If I want to spend over $100 for one, I will. Right now, I am saving for something else, but there might come a time when I want to get one that does everything. To me, it is not a status symbol, it is the same as when I buy a computer, I want one that I do not have to think that it is too slow. Same with a cell phone. You get one for what you will use it for, even if it is not at the present. So if the data rates go down here in Canada, I would not mind an Iphone and one in which the keyboard appears and I do not have to type the letters that are above the numbers on the keyboard and I would not mind one in which I could take photos in emergencies. That is what I feel about cell phones. I want one that lasts and is not flimsily made.

I am not interested in status at all, I have a cellphone with a few features that i use, and I keep it hidden most of the time. I don't have it to look a certain way, I have it because I need the features it has, and because it works for me. For me a cellphone is about convenience, not about status.

Well I don't think I'd ever waste money in a gadget I don't even use mostly. I only get to handle my cellphone when I'd text my husband or my son and that is not so often because we most of the time use the landline to communicate. I don't even give out my number to anyone because I don't wanna be bothered with receiving many texts which are mostly unwanted and not that important. I'm contented with my old cellphone and have no intention to buy more expensive one. I would rather invest my money in more sensible things.

I am so with you on this. As I said in one of my comments, people's priorities change. I'm not married.. But I also hate giving out my mobile number to people. Yes, I do like to be reachable, but I don't like it getting abused. For instance, people at work would send me SMS or even call me even at unholy hours of the night and on holidays! It's really insane.

Yeah, I noticed that too, we can account the fact that we as human beings we are not really much satisfied into something. People wanted something more than owning for the purpose until at some point becoming vain, and extravagant especially people who can afford it, I mean I don't think it is necessarily wrong if you want to pamper yourself with that out of a hard work then you deserve it, but it is wrong when someone tried to own something which is not necessarily suit his/her needs or lifestyle until doing something that is really really bad then that is definitely wrong. As technology or business seek profit, man himself sought for his pleasure.

I agree with you on this, but I also want to share another side of the story. When mobile phones were still "new" in my country, owning one was a status symbol. Of course, this was attributed to the model and brand of the handset. However, what I noticed, is that, as time went by and as mobile phone companies came up with different kinds of mobile phones, there has been a shift from luxury to functionality... Here in my country, I noticed that there is a pressure amongst high school and college students, to own a nicer kind of mobile phone. However, as you grow up and when you start to work, your needs and priorities change. Mobile phones become secondary and you're not too conscious about the model. Just my two cents :)

I could not agree more, I feel the cell phone thing has gotten out of control. My bill is way to high a month and I feel I should get a home phone back instead. I do not leave and travel as much as I use to and I feel that what I pay every month to have a cell phone has exceeded my monthly budget. I mean I might get a prepaid and use that instead. Only problem with getting a home phone back for me is the fact that I owe the phone company a chuck of change and I am not sure I could pay it all at once. I agree with you on the cost of the phones too. I paid like 250 or something for the one I have and I have not even had it for a year and it is crap. Anyway nice topic and happy mylotting to you friend.

I think it all depends on what a person needs to use it for. Some people need an expensive cell phone like a black berry because they need all of those extra features. Or there are a lot of people out there like myself who text a lot so they find it more convinient to have a full keyboard to text with... I have never seen it as a status thing though, i think it just depends on a persons needs and life style

Well, you have said it yourself, handsets has become synonymous with one's status. If one is rich and can afford such expensive phones, then let them be. Its either they worked hard to earn enough to purchase such models or they simply can afford it. Some are indeed rich but, still prefer simple ones that you can purchase but, given the chance that one can afford a better phone, why not? Say that its a waste of money? Then it is but, wasting money has always happened around us before and up to now. In my case, I really don't mind using an old phone which I am actually using up to now. It still serves it's purpose so I won't be looking for another phone for quite a long time. (^_^ )

Today it is not a big deal to have a cellphone here. As even if the cleaner also has a cellphone:) It is a very common thing right now. But some cellphones and its accessories can be quite expensive, especially the new models. I also don't think it is wise to spend so much to buy them. I will wait for some time and buy it when the price is reasonable. I love China

having a cell phone as far as i am concerned is not a matter of pride but a touch of necessity and its an important item in life for work and communication, however the type of cell phone you go for will depend on what you are looking for in a phone and the purpose for which you want to use the phone,so it will also depend on your pocket size ,so the more features you want, the more expensive you pay

I do think that for most part, it's not about pride or status... I understand that there are some people out there who think it is & goes out & buys expensive phones that they don't even need... People like that usually buy stuff they don't need all the time so it's not just about cell phones... I myself always owned basic phones but little over a year ago, I had a change of position in my work so I had to go out & get myself a blackberry pearl 8120... At the time, phone was still fairly new so price was still on higher end but I bought it because I needed it, not wanted it... I needed to keep constant contact with my clients & co-workers via emails... Also camera came in handy as well... I pretty much used all the features that phone came with... Now that my work paid for my laptop & camera, I don't need that phone anymore... So I went out & bought one of the most basic phone, Nokia 8890... Model of the phone itself is close to 10 years old... I can make & receive calls & send & receive text messages & for me, it's perfect...

I'm not fond of cellphones. We had three cellphones in our home. But we only use one cp and it's my sister who use it. The other two cellphones are lying in a cabinet drawer waiting for somebody to get it. If for some other cp is very important. Then I can live my life with out it.

You are right sir! These days cells are also a kinnof status symbol. You carry a N series Nokia Mobile, People will think you are modern and up to date. So more expensive your handset is so it represents your economic status, that is what defines social status today.. However, there are people who still use mobile as a necessity good and not as luxury. But they are poor people as well as those from lower middle class, Today even a sweeper, gate keepers and scavngers keep mobile to stay in touch with their kiths and kins and for work purpose. But amongst the youngsters, there is a crage for fancy handsets so even from low income groups, the youth compete for owning expensive mobiles irrespective of the fact wether they can afford it or not. They use credit cards, loans and installment schemes to fulfill their desire. This credit culture has made society and individuals addicted of consumerism.

over here cell phones are not expensive but I heard the monthly bill is higher than landline. I don't know if it's true I never have one myself. Hubby used to have it and he said it's expensive because we also have a landline already. Cell phone is convenient for emergency or if you travel a lot etc. If we get rid of landline we might get cell phone but we don't want to have both yet. We are still saving. Some people might use it to show off but who cares LOL they are the ones paying, or at least their parents anyway.

I don't own a cell phone because it somehow gives me rank in society. I use it because it's a piece of technology that is convienient for me. It allows my husband to get ahold of me when I'm in class, and allows me to get ahold of him when he's at work. I also find that it is cheaper for us to own two cell phones, then add the phone to our cable bundle. My husband invested in a hands-free bluetooth device becaues it's safter when on the road. We talk during his ride home, and that's the safest way to do it. And unfortunately they are not cheap! I'm thinking of getting one because when I get a phone call at home and the kids are still up I find it difficult to hold the phone and deal with them lol. Namaste-Anora

I agree to them that now a days owning a high tech cellphones become a status symbol. For me if you can't afford to have one I think you should be contented on what you have. I think owning a latest trend of cellphones is a luxury I know someone who owned more than 1 cellphones. For now I can't buy a new model of cellphone because I can't afford it and I'm contented on what I have right now. As long as I can be able to text and call in my cellphone I'm fine. Now that we experience the crisis we should consider if we really need them or it is only waste of money.

I use my cell phone basically for talking, as it is the only phone I have, since I don't have a landline. It also has a camera, and lots of other features that I don' really use. I do like the windows media player though, as I wil listen to my music on it. I don't play games on my cell phone, nor do I download games for it. The screen is just to small to play games anyway. I only paid $100 for mine, so it was relatively inexpensive. It has the internt on it as well, but I don't use it because it costs me an extra fee every month. I just don't feel it is necessary to have the internet on a cell phone. That is the way I feel about it anyway.

I think so. For some people, the cellphone they own means something to them, especially for businessmen. In such a circle, the clothing, the watch, the gadgets they wear in some sense convey some information to others. For them, they have enough money to buy a luxious one, why they don't? Those things stand for their priority and high status in society. But we must agree that majority of people just regard them as daily necessity. What they value are their practical features and looks and designs. They will choose the cellphone with reasonable price within their paying capacity. In addition, young people like to show off their cell pjones. This is related to their nature of following fashione, being competitive and pursuing novelty. They will often change their cell phone, but they generally don't regard the price as the first condition when they choose the cellphone for themselves.
