What is the difference between Swine and Pig?

IS there any difference between swine and pig? Are they the same? I guess they refer to the same animal, but o guess swine is on old, and pig is an easy and new one. and "swine" may sound more formal than pig? Am i right?

I think swine is used to indicate a female pig.

May I know where you guess is from? A swine can be male, I believe.
