The least amount of sleep?

The least amount of sleep I can function with is around the 6 hour mark. Any less than this and I really do struggle to get on with daily tasks. How about you?

Yes that is good that you can get back into bed. Catching up on sleep is important for overall health. x

I suppose in some ways that is lucky. However it is obviously not a good thing that you do not sleep well. Is it because you are a light sleeper?

I am someone who needs my sleep or I get very cranky (at least my hubby thinks so), which he is probably right. I feel like if I don't get the 8 hours of sleep I can't even think very well and I am just not feeling right all day. I am tired a lot thought even though I get the right amount of sleep most of the time.

Your are right about that. I don't typically drink more than a glass or two of water per day. I need to be drinking much more than that.

I can get very irritable without sleep too! If you feel tired generally though that is not a good sign. Make sure you are drinking plenty of water during the day and consuming a good amount of fresh vegetables and fruit as part of your diet. Thanks for the response.

I am sure in that case that you are feeling tired due to dehydration. Definitely increase your water intake. I think you will find that it makes a very positive difference.

I think it all depends on the metabolism, profession and life style of a person to understand the amount of sleep he must have. For me, it would be little above 6 hours, may be 7 hours. I love sleeping but do not get to for daily tasks and the times when i am free I just cannot sleep. I think you cannot prepare yourself to sleep. It happens.

I don't know about that! If I am in the mood to sleep I can usually talk myself into it. There are other times of course when I manage to wear myself out and my body almost forces me to sleep even when I need to stay awake! Thanks for the response.

my regular sleeping hours is six. any more than that and i'd get a headache. any less than that and i'd find myself taking a nap in the afternoon. :) but i can still function well even without sleep for the entire day. but i have to make up for the lost sleep by the next day or else i'd go cranky and be senseless and useless the entire following day... -lol-

Hi there, yes I know what you mean. When we miss out on sleep, catching up is real important. I agree that too much sleep is not a good thing either and sometimes when I get too much (i.e more than 9 hours) I can wake up feeling even more tired!

Yes, me too! I have to have atleast 6 hours of UNINTERRUPTED sleep. If I get woke up then I do not feel rested at all. Sleep is so important. With severe depression sometimes I fall into a cycle of 4 hours of sleep and then I am up for about 4 and then back to sleep. I haven't done this in a while but it can last for several days and makes me no good to acomplish anything.

Sleep is so crucial and I think many people do not understand the importance of getting enough. It seems this discussion is highlighting it's importance however. Thanks for the response and take care. x

i can still manage stuffs through even if i only get 3 hours of sleep, i even tried not to sleep during our school encampment because we were task to counts the votes for the newly assigned school leaders. The funny thing about it is that, i even went for a swim after the whole encampment. Hahai, High school stuffs are really fun:)

Wow I am so useless on 3 hours of sleep! I guess it must be because you are still so young - enjoy these times!

Really? So you have actually been trained to withstand a small amount of sleep at school? That is very interesting and I have never heard of anything like it before. Which part of the world did you go to school?

I have gone days without sleeping, but it wasn't by choice. I have a problem with insomnia. Over the counter medications didn't work, so the doctors had to give me a very high dose of prescription medication to make me fall asleep. Since I don't like having to take meds to fall asleep, I rarely do take them. This results in me getting an average of 4 hours a sleep a night. And I can go a week doing that and function quite well. But every so often I cut one of the sleeping pills in half and take it. With that, I can get about six hours of sleep.

Hi there AmbiePam, I am sorry to hear about your sleeping problems but am glad that you seem to be managing them. Thanks for the response.

I would really prefer to get 6 hours uninterrupted sleep, I could function nicely on that! I go to bed around 11pm and am up about 7:30am. That sounds like a lot, right? But I toss and turn all night because my joints hurt and sometimes have to get up and walk around awhile. I guess I get about 4-5 hours of broken sleep. I'm always tired. Old age is not for sissies!
@UK_Shree (3603)

Aww, I am sorry to hear about that. 4-5 hours sure isn't that much. Thanks for responding dragon54u.

Hello... I love to sleep. It makes me feel sooo good. However, when I have tons of deadlines, I can manage without any. Yup, I can work without any sleep if there is something that I really need to attend to. When necessary, I can do with 5hrs quality sleep. But given the chance, I can sleep for more than 8hrs.LOL. Lack of sleep for several days give me a headache. I sleep a lot to avoid migraine attacks as well. I only get deprived of sleep when I really have to. Have a great day! Weng

Well I can definitely relate to that as I really enjoy sleeping too! But if I get too much sleep then I don't always feel that great. I know what you mean about not sleeping when you really need to get something done - been there many times before. Thanks a lot for the response.

Like you, I can't function with less than 6 hours of sleep. but I much prefer to get more sleep than that, because I function a lot better with more than 6 hours. However, if I must get only 6 hours, then I must only get six hours, and that's that. I can't do more than that.

I know, sometimes we have little choice about how much sleep we can get. As long as we are sensible and try to catch up on lost sleep. Thanks for the response.

6 hours is my limit also. Any less than that and I am in a fog all day. 8 is the best and sometimes even 10.
@UK_Shree (3603)
28 Apr 09
You do sound quite similar to me. For me 8 is also ideal. If I am really tired then 10 is great but I don't think that 10 hours of sleep everyday would be good for me as I think it may even be a little too much.

I think I can still be quite productive with four hours of sleep only. However, any less than that then I'd be a zombie by morning. A six hour sleep is quite normal for me. That's how long I usually sleep - especially when I juggle gym, work, and going out to relax :) Thanks for the response on my discussion!

I admit it is not easy trying to get all the days activities into just 24 hours. 4 hours of sleep really isn't very much in my opinion and I am suprised that you still manage to get stuff done on such little sleep. I guess everyone's body's are different. Thanks for responding.

Ideally I need to sleep eight hours a night I cannot seem to function on less,although having had less sleep it catches up with me.When I was younger sleep was always a necessary part of my life. I am just one of those people who need their sleep.xx

Thanks for the response suuzy3, I think all of us are built differently when it comes to how much sleep we need. Like you however I do need my eight hours if possible.

I need at least that amount also. I seems if I can't get the sleep I need that I just fell drained.

I also feel drained and just not quite right somehow if I do not get the right amount of sleep.

i sleep around 6 hours too.. but my minimum would be 4 hours.. anything less than that will make my cranky all day..hehe

four hours is not very much! I can just about get buy with only 6 hours of sleep. But I wouldn't be able to go two or three days in a row with anything less than that. Thanks for responding.

Hi UK, I think we may all be different this way. I like to get 7 to 8 hours of sleep, I don't always get it, but I function better. I know people who do quiet well on less than 5 hours and I use to think that it was a age thing but I'm not sure anymore, as some seniors say they need less sleep than when they were younger. I guess it just has to be chalked up to another way in which we are all different. Blessings.
@UK_Shree (3603)
28 Apr 09
Very true. We are all different at the end of the day and predictions can only really be made based on the 'general' population. It would be incredibly interesting if it is not an age-related thing.

Many of our bodies do seem to send us signals of when we need sleep and when we are okay to wake up without us even having to think about it. Thanks for responding!

I usually get somewhere between 4-7 hrs of sleep a night. So I guess the least amount of sleep would be about 3hrs and then I can't function.
@UK_Shree (3603)
28 Apr 09
I actually think that 4 hours of sleep for one night is too little but then I guess that we all function quite differently. I have heard that the average amount lies somewhere between 7-9 hours for most people.
