Got Wood?

United States

We are almost done with our hardwood floors in our livingroom. Anyone who has installed these know it is not easy work by any means but oh does it look nice when done. Now I have no carpet anywhere in my house and am happy to get rid of my vacuum. So what kind of floors do you have in your place? Do you want hardwood floors?

My cat is declawed. This is my first time with hardwood so I will see if anything becomes an issue soon lol. But its pretty hard wood so scratching it will be dificult. My big ole german shephard cant scratch it so i think we may be good lol.

Minnie, my love, its not the CLAWS I'm refering too. Its the stuff that comes out either end. Vomit is very acidic and the other stuff, well, ammonia isn't good for wood either.

this house has a cement foundation and it had carpeting throughout on top of it. I have removed the carpet now from the bathroom, dining room, kitchen, hall way and 2 bedrooms - I hope to get the rest removed soon. I have asthma and carpet is just not a very good idea. I would love hardwood floors but I do not see it happening for awhile yet as we have been unemployed for 2 months now. I do have some tile that would be nice for the bathroom, hall and dining rooms.

Tile is nice to we got some marble tiles to finish our basement bathroom with. Polished concrete sounds interesting.

Modestah, my sister-in-law has just built a beautiful home in the country - and they have polished concrete floors! It looks absolutely gorgeous, and they have beautiful rugs on it. The floors are really easy to keep clean, and it doesn't matter what gets spilled or whether pets or babies have accidents - everything's easily cleaned up. The concrete has some kind of tinted sealer on top, and was then buffed to a high gloss. It's a charcoaly colour, and looks fantastic.

I actually prefer carpetting. I think it makes the home warmer and feel warmer and cozier. We have hardwood in our family room and the upstairs hallway. They're okay but my husband put fake hardwood in my daughter's room and it is so cold. Her bedroom is over the front porch so the room is chilly to begin with so having a bare floor makes it even colder. We have ceramic tile in our entry hallway and two bathrooms. It's freeeeeeezing! I won't talk about the kitchen because it's really old and needs replacing. The other two bedrooms, living room/dining room area and the basement rec room are all carpetted. The bedroom carpets are really old. Probably the original carpetting. It has the same pattern that was in my mother's house when I was living there so many years ago. The living room/dining room carpet is a very neutral colour and is covered in stains. It needs replacing but my husband would prefer no carpets. I just think it's too cold.

The fake wood is kinda cold. i use rugs under my couch and stuff to help with the warmth. We had some old stained carpet as well. We love animals so hardwood made sense for us.

I agree....I prefer the warmth of carpet and I think in the long run you have about as much maintainance as with hardwood...

They are expensive but I love them. I just love that I wont have an issue with stains anymore. When Savannas sippy cup/bottle leaks I just wipe it up and its gone.

Hi minnie. To answer your question, I really like those oak wood types. Totally my taste and the darker, the better. Congratulations on your new home, I suppose? And have you moved in already. I'm sure it is beautifully done by now. Have a nice day, my friend.

I love hardwood floors, and we have one in our big, back room, with a large rug. The rest of the house is carpeted, but when we ripped up the old carpet and had bare floors for a few days whilst waiting for the new carpet to be laid, I wished we could just leave it bare! My husband wasn't keen, however - he thought it would be pretty cold in winter. Hardwood floors are excellent if you have allergy sufferers in the house, and are much healthier!

I have hardwood in my living room/den areas. I have marble tile in the kitchen, dining room, and utility rooms. I HAD carpet in the bedrooms but ripped it up and found regular old wood floors underneath - so I painted them! I had always had carpeting in my houses - but I LOVE my pets and love them to be around me all the time. Therefore carpeting was a huge problem - stains, fleas, dirt, hair, etc. Now, No problems whatsoever. Loving it! BUT DO take extra special care of the hardwood - never let them get wet and keep them swept/polished. I do mine every week, if not more. I use a special polish - I apply it with a dry mop and use a towel to buff it. It's gorgeous and not too much work if you stay on top of it!

We have linoleum in the kitchen and bathroom, and carpet the rest of the house. My husband does not want hardwood floors because it will get damaged when you move the furniture and you have to polish it and wax it all the time. We had it in our first house and it was scratchy when we moved the table and sofa to clean them. But if there were an easy care hardwood floor, I would not mind as I love the way they look.

I didnt want them at first but the hubby talked me into it. I know the laminate wood has been nice to us. I move stuff all the time and no scratches yet.

Sweeping is better then vacuuming. At least with sweeping the dust goes away doesnt just float around in the air.

I wish I had nothing but wood floors. Since I've almost always had pets, I have always hated carpet. I've had wood floors in the past and wish I could have them in this house, but it's a rental and not up to us. You are lucky!

IMHO carpet suxx. I would not willingly have carpet anywhere, too much trouble and too hard to get or keep clean. I'd even take tile or linoleum over carpet. Can ya tell I don't like the stuff LOL

WE have laminate flooring in our living room and ceramic tile in our kitchen sweety - everywhere else is carpeted apart from the bathroom which has cushioned linoleum! I would love to get wooden floors in the bedrooms but my kids are noisy enough - they would sound like 3 herds of elephants if I had wood floors up there than teh 1 they sound like now! lol xxx

We have mostly hardwood floors in our house too, the only place we don't have it is in the two bedrooms, we have carpet in there, I would like to pull the carpet out and put hardwood floors in there too, I think its prettier and its easier to clean, just take a dust broom over it and it gets clean and shiny. I wouldn't miss having a vacuum either.

Hardwood floors are very nice. We have carpeting and tile. These are nice as well. I like carpeting on the stairs myself. Alot of people don't seem to. I would like hardwood floors in the dining room and hall ways. I think carpet in the dining room is just wrong. I remember our old house and the pain my x went through bringing up the old ugly green carpet in the living room and then finishing the wood that was underneath. Looks nice now.

when my girlfriend and I buy the house were moving into in may we are pulling out all the carpet. Have you guys seen that snap together hardwood stuff? It looks like oak but it's cheaper and has a hard vinyl coating over it to prevent scratching. It's pretty easy to install. Just tongue and groove flooring. My place is gonna be great! Carpet is ridiculous and should be left in the past. All it does is soak up odors and dirt. Vaccuuming is stupid too. When I can just sweep all the floors rather than vaccuum them I will be happy. So I assume you put in the real deal? Are you going to laquer it afterwards? Would love to see pictures if you did it yourself!

I have wood, and carpet. I would like to have lineoleum or tile in areas like the kitchen and bath and either refinish the wood floors or have laminate installed over them.

Oh how nice. We have carpet every where except in the bathrooms, the entry way and the kitchen. We used to have a house that had wood floors and it was so nice and not sure what got into our heads but we put carpet down in the living room. We had wood floors in our house when I was little and my mother kept them so pretty all the time. I remember her moping and waxing them and you could see yourself in them, beautiful. I would love to have hardwood floors again but not sure how it would work on this concrete foundation.

Hey minnie! Oh how I wish I could get rid of my ugly, dirty old carpet forever! I hate carpet! I would so love to have all wood floors! But, being that I live in an apartment and the floors don't belong to me there isn't much that I can do! The floors underneath the carpet are horrible and I am not paying for them to be redone either! So I will either be stuck getting indoor/outdoor carpet which I will hate or I just don't know! I really love wood floors so much! You are so lucky! If I could I would install them in a minute!

Well that sucks. I never liked living in apartments that wouldnt allow me to do what I wanted to it. But then again you wouldnt want to invest much money in a place that isnt yours.
