I'd say that's the effect of exposure to technology. A lot of information is accessible through other media which provide easy and quick access. Non-readers don't like the less stimulating texts on the book.

Not so sure about 'good communicator' being a plus to reading since I read quite a bit and my vocal communication skills have always been null. Text on the other hand I do quite well at. And it really depends what you read as well. You can read all the romance novels in the world and not come out any smarter than you went in.
But I also blame "technology" now everything has a movie or an audio book and whatnot so no-one has to read anything anymore. I won't even start on e-books. .

i dont think it is fair to claim that readers are smarter and good communicators.. i know people that never read and have higher iqs than people that do read.. not to mention the people that like to escape into a book to where they wont have to communicate with others..
just like anything there is a mix

It really breaks my heart when people tell me they hate to read. I mean, with so many different authors and genres to choose from... how can you? It's like saying you hate music or something. How can you just collectively hate it all? If I knew why people hate to read, then I'd go about fixing it immediately. I believe the decline of reading for fun has lead to the decline of IQ in America's youth.
It's probably those darn movies. I mean, I love movies... and I'm eve a filmmaker... but movies don't hold a candle to books.
