If you were ordered to stay in your home how long could you?

With this swine flu going around and all the talk about the possibility of a quarentine I was wondering how long we could coup up in the house and still have what we need to get by. I think we could go for a few months unless our water or utilities were turned off then just a month or two. Water would be the first issue for us. How long could you get by?

I am a homebuddy by nature but of course I do long for the outside world too. I could probably last for 2 weeks. After that, I would be kicking my way out of the house!

I think I could last a little longer then a week or two but Im not sure I would enjoy any of it. I think that the fact that someone told me to stay home would be what made it feel like it was a hard thing for me.

Being a working woman I love to be at home. I eagerly wait for holidays to come so that I can be at home. like to watch movies. can spend some time with my family especially my child. But I dont think that being at home for more than 2 or 3 weeks is fine for me. Will get bored. Here you have mentioned about the flu as the reason if it is so, then you should be at home and should be careful. Store enough food and water. If you there is water in the tap..you can boil it and use. it will be safe. Take care of your health. it is important. Good luck.

If some one near you gets ill then there is the chance that you will be instructed to stay in your home to not get someone else ill. If it gets bad then you might be instructed to stay home so that you lessen your chance of getting it. All in all it isnt like you get to choose, so you might not be as ready as you would like to be. I more then anything care about keeping my kids as safe as can be so that is my plan, keep them safe and then try to keep life as normal as possible.

Me and my wife usually stay home almost all day. We just go out when we go to work. We really like being indoors and we feel we have lots of things to do when we're together. I think we won't have any problems when that situation arise.

Id love the time at home with my family, but if we were orderd indoors for a long time, we would start to run out of food and water after a while. I hope it does not come to that but better to be ready.

I think that would be hard especially when you have a family to contend with. I think I can take as long as two weeks but beyond that I think life would be very hard already. If provision for food would be provided for me maybe I could still extend one more week for that to happen though.

I know we have the food to get through, the water we might not, but I assume it will still come out of the tap. My main concern would be my family and keeping them comfortable and secure.

Well i can stay at home as much as i need to. Yeah, as long as there's water and enough food. Can we add internet? I mean it gets boring after a day so i need my fix of internet. lol! That's not too much to ask right? lol! I'm a home body so this is really nothing new to me. I mean i have all the convenience right here at home so going out isn't really a big deal to me.

I can stay home if I need to but I think I will miss seeing people. I will miss visiting with neighbors and sending the kids to the park when I get few up and need a minute. I guess we all have things that will be easy and things that will be hard for us.

I could stay home for a long time. I have books, music, movies, and games to keep myself occupied. As long as food didn't run out, I'd be ok. I think I would get a little stir crazy after a week or so, but I think I could handle it. I do live alone, so I might be lonely, but fortunately I have a computer (internet) and a phone (to call people) so I wouldn't be completely isolated. Though I would admittedly have a hard time not seeing anyone, it would be more important to stay healthy, and I think that would be my number one priority.

It might be hard but I think that the idea of what might happen when and if you left would be enough to keep you motivated. I think staying home would feel secure and safe when you think about what might be out there.

As long as need be. Although, if you're asking the questiopn of; "When the cabin fever will start setting in? When will the madness break you?"...well, it's hard to say. It took three or four months to start fwwling restless due to the winter...a tiny dose of cabin fever...so I suppose thats some indication. We've about that much food. I could survive our tap water, too, we're on a well...it just wouldn't be terribly fun. However, should I find out that the reason I'm stuck in my house is somehow false, or fabricated, then I'm out in a second...be danged the consequences.

I get cabin fever over the winter so bad. The kids trapped in the house and the constant fighting. The thought of it is horrible. I hope for sanitys sake that it never happens.

I don't see it coming to this really. Still, I could go for a month or so easily i think. I guess my biggest problem would be in wondering how my rent would be paid if I'm not going out and earning any money. ya...lack of income would be the biggest problem.

I hope it never comes to that for any reason but if it did I think money would be our biggest problem too. I can pay bills for a while but after the first month of bills we would be in trouble. I hope that if came to that the utilities would be somewhat understanding.

me too. I've never known them to be an understanding bunch but in the face of an emergency, i would hope they would be humane enough to make allowances.

I could stay coup up for a long time( well after I went shopping of course). What worry's me a bit is if my husband got stuck in quarantine away from home. He works at a hospital and they reserve the right to do this to any of the hospital employee's if they feel there is a bio threat, tornado coming and anything to do along those lines. So I have no ideal how long they would hold him if something like that happened. Right now we have enough food to last a few weeks, almost out of bottle water though. But after I go shopping at the store I should have enough food to last a month or longer after I buy some food staples that have a long storage life.Later when I go to the store I'm going to double up on the bottle water also.

I would be a complete stress case if I had no idea if my hubby was comming home. My Hubby was working on the Olympic site durring 9/11 and it was listed as a possible attack spot. I was on the phone the whole day making sure he was okay. I was stuck at home pregnant and not able to leave and he was an hour away. He did make it home that night, but it seemed like forever to me.

I was also pregnant when 9/11 happened,at the time it happened I though " OMG, what type of world I'm I bringing a child into?". That would scare me also, I'm glad your husband was alright.I Imagine it's a nightmare being pregnant and fearing for your husbands life on that day .

Given the opportunity to run to the grocery store we would be okay for a while. I think if it happened tonight we would last about a month on the food we have in the house. It would be hard with the kids.

I would think if we had a disaster that we were forced to stay in out houses for we wouldnt get much notice. Here where I live we are warned we are due a major earthquake and that could happen at any time. That is the kind of notice Id like to be ready for. They kids would fight and fight though. It would be stressful.

I think knowing that you could make it in your home for a while is a great comfort to the just in case things in life. If we got stuck in our house food and water would not be a huge thing we needed to worry about. One less worry anyway.

Hi happythoughts, I have to honestly say that I myself am disabled and I am not able to work just yet but hopefully soon I will be able to. I have times to where I am home alot and others I am not but if I had no choice and if I had to I could probably stay in for maybe two months I do have plenty to keep me busy but I also need my family and friends.

I understand that completely. I would miss my family a lot. We go and see our parents each week, and I dont think I have gone a week with out seeing my Mom unless we were out of town. I think the days would drag by until we could see them again. I was thinking if a disaster did happen it migh tbe nice if they all loaded up any supplys they had and we all shared at my house. My parents and inlaws get a long okay as well as my brother inlaw and his wife. It might be nice to make a team of it all.

Im a home buddy but I won't last more than a month at home without socializing to my family and friends. Survival is not a question, coz if we have enough food and water its not a problem. Boredom is the real issue here. Even if i have a computer and i stay online talking to people its still different in meeting them in person. We can play as many games as we want, still, our human needs for social activities will always come knocking. There are people who can stand living in an island by themselves as long as they have pets, but I'm not sure how long a man will survive without really talking to anyone. In my case, I'll be paranoid... lol...

Paranoia would probibly be what did me in. If I cant see what I am dealing with I imagine the absolute worse thing that might be happening. Im sure if there were an illness that we were trapped in out house for, I would imagine zombies out side trying to break in. To many years of video games have warped my mind.

It would be perfectly possible to stay at home for several months. I have reasonable stocks of food and water(which includes a system to capture rain water to the toilet and etc). Moreover, with a computer, and internet acess, boredom is not a problem

Wow, sounds like you are all set up for what ever comes. That must feel very good to know that you have a back up plan for lifes disasters.

I have enough food for several months, maybe half a year, but water would be a problem if the utilities were turned off. I have some stashed, but not nearly enough - maybe enough for a couple of weeks at the most. I ought to do something about that! Other than food and water, I'd be happy to stay at home for the most part. There's enough to keep me busy for a long time and I have enough books and magazines, besides the piano and guitar and other things I enjoy doing.

That is a great supply you have. We have a good food supply but water is our issue as well. I am buying extra pop at the store as we go and when the 2L bottles are empty we are filling them with water. That way we are not spending a fortune to get it all taken care of and we are storing pop for now. For the most part I can be happy at home, I will worry about my family that is on the outside though.

I think how long we could physically stay in is kind of moot because we would start to get cabin fever after a few days and after a week or so somebody would fly the coop. LOL

I can't stay in one place for long... it will make me going crazy. However, if it is necessary to stay home then I would try... water is not a big issue to me, I can boil water to drink if I run out of bottle water.

I didnt thing about boiling the water. That is a relief to me in a way. I think the more we are told to stay the more we will want to get out and see the world.

Hi, I don't mind staying home if there is enough food and water, plus the internet and tv is working. I would also have my books to keep me company; so I suppose I can stay home for a long, long time.

Id like to think that we have enough food to get us by but I think it might not last as long as we think. I have a pantry full of foods but when I add it all up its weeks worth and not months like I thought. We do have extra food stored else where but still who knows how long it will really take us to eat our way through it.

Interesting thought. Now, if it was just myself I could do it no problem. But, I have two teenage children who would end up killing themselves with all the fighting and arguing they do...so...yeah, what would be the worse of the two evils? I think I'd either have to put them into a coma so they could sleep the whole restricted time or something. Food and water really wouldn't be the issue...but is the trash still being picked up on a weekly basis? If not, I think I'd go for the whole fruits and veggies...and buy some of those worms that eat up the garbage and help with the soil. That is, if it's still safe. *Pleiades

I didnt even think about the kids fighting, wow, that changes stuff. Argh...Screaming and fighting and no where to escape from it. If it ever gets to that point please, please let the TV keep working.

I can stay back very very long time in my house if there are adequate supplies for food water and an internet connection. That's all I really need .... not much of demand I would say. For fresh air I feel opening my doors and windows will fulfill my fresh oxygen needs. Having the internet will anyway keep me busy all day long because these days we generally spend much more time on the net rather than watching TV or something else. If I could afford a cook all the more good for me .... that's the best I can have. No headache of cooking too and whenever I am hungry food will be ready. Now that doesn't mean I do not love cooking but I like to cook occasionally.

I enjoy cooking a lot, but I think when the options started running out then it would loose its fun. Mac and cheese isnt my favorite thing to eat or make but if we are hungry we will eat it.
