I have a 2 year old that has been very clumsy this week she has spilled – milk, water, juice, breakfast (eggs, bacon and oatmeal) and more. Which brings me to this discussion … What do you think about when some thing spills? First thing I think is get a towel clean it up. Then I think well there went 2 dollars or a dollar. I never used to think like that but now with the economy being the way it is and my paycheck hardly making the bills that’s all I can think of. Its funny to because I used to just grab a few paper towels and clean it up but now I get a kitchen towel or rag to clean it up because that’s a lot cheaper then buying paper towels for spills. It is a lot cheaper to throw the wash cloth in the washer with the other stuff then to buy more paper towels. Don’t you think? So when you see milk, juice or breakfast on the floor what do you think about? By the way as I was typing this my daughter spilled my coffee!! There went 75 cents!

I stopped using paper towels a long time ago ,a cloth that can be rinsed out and used time and time again. My fifteen year old son has been going through a very clumsy stage at the moment ,he is going through a growing stage he is now taller than all of us at five foot eight. It is a spacial awarness issue with them, mind you all that tea spilt on the carpet he is so sorry about it,he needs more room around him know but his brain has not caught up with the growth spurt.Do what I do make her sit down and drink and eat ,my boy is not allowed to move around when eating and drinking. It is anightmare my carpet is going through it luckily I do have a good carpet cleaner.Food gets no further than his mouth it is like filling a cement mixer that keeps churning around that is filling up the channel tunnel.x

LOL boy I understand what you are saying ... my younger but very much LARGER brother is just like your son. At 16 he is 6'2" and about 215 pounds! He's a big goofy, clumsy, boy! Anyway back to my daughter... It really doesn't matter if she is sitting or standing these days every thing seems to end up on the floor. As I said at the end of this discussion she spilled my coffee while I was typing so I put my coffee in a travel mug with a lid guess what she walked by and knocked it over!

hahaha i totally know what you mean cos my 1 year old is doing that from her bottle grins, i'm the same too, in thinking that ok, there goes my money or my food, and then after that, for me since i'm lazy, i also think, i just mopped the house yesterday and it's already so dirty but i don't feel like cleaning up:P i too use rags or cloth to clean up the spilt stuff. i also begin to scold my son_

LOL after I got done starting the disucussion and cleaning up the coffee I put more in a travel mug with a lid... what did she do but spill it too! I told her she needs to open her eyes! LOL She usually isn't that clumsy but wow this week I'm ready to scream! I do have tile floor but I have a LARGE area rug I think I am going to roll up the rug for a while. Its really nice and getting ruined really quick!

hahahah again huh, yea that sucks and it's so frustrating. haha i understand about your rug problem too. haha lol my carpet has been ruined umpteen times that i'm now thinking of buying a few metres of nice cloth and sewing it to make it like a cover for my carpet too, so that the cover is the one that gets dirty more and i don't have to wash my carpet as often, thus not destroying even more with the washing.

I think pretty much like you do with the economy the way it is and I'm struggling month to month I still give her cups with straws for right now...But she does use other cups!

I do give her cups with straws. I also give her sippy cups if I know she is going to be playing rather then just sitting eating dinner. Its not just the cups that I give her she spills my drinks too. She will walk by the coffee table and bump into it or bump into the drink and there it goes on the floor.

I usually think about my security deposit. We live in an apartment and my son is 2 and a half and he is just now learning how not to spill. I always keep carpet cleaner and an old rag under the sink just for him. But you are right to think about the money lost even if is only a few cents every now and then. It is just getting more expensive to raise kids. People always talk about the food costs, clothing and education, no one everythings about the house hold maintance due to kids (toddlers mainly). My son can spill anything, yes even a sippy cup with a spill proof lid on it.

I think the household maintenance is one of the more expensive parts of raising a kid. I mean really my couch was really nice ... not so much any more. My area rug was beautiful ... NOT any more! I gave up on the spill proof lids ... she didn't like them and they didn't work! I am lucky I didn't have to worry about a security deposit because this house is owned by my parents. Instead of cleaning it up after the last people left they let us do it instead of giving a deposit. We lived here once before too about 4 years ago for a year and left it in great condition so they aren't worried about it. Differance now is we have a kid then we didn't!
