As some of you may know I love the Dutch holiday queens day. It's because people, especially children, get to go out on the street and sell their goods. As an avid my little pony collector I love to visit this huge fleamarket that takes place all over the country and try to find new additions to my collection. I have made a seperate post about this because I didn't feel comfotable about putting this in the same discussion. This afternoon during the festivities there was a man who has broken through 2 safety fences with a black car and apparently tried to crash it into the open top bus the royal family was driving around the city Apeldoorn. He crashed into a national monument and was cut free from the car and arrested. Of the 17 people who got injured during this incident 4 have passed away, 5 have heavy injuries and 8 have ligther injuries. The victims includes both man, woman and children. The festivities were stopped throughout the country in respect for the victims and their loved ones. It is not sure yet whether this was a terrorist attack or not, for the time being there seems to be no evidence it is. The motive of the man is not yet clear, but they do know that he is a native dutchman, 38 years old and apparently he was concious and sane of mind when he acted. Have you experienced something like this in your country?

What a sad thing! The man may have been conscious ... I think I would question his sanity, though. I am glad that the Royal Family are safe, of course, but very sad for the people who were injured and killed and for their families. Some people do not agree with the rather archaic institution of a Royal Family (and yours is rather more 'popular' than ours, I think). Ours are something like living waxworks, I sometimes feel! (Not that I would see that as any reason to do them harm ... I think they earn their keep).

Thank you for this response owlwings. I agree that this is a very sad occassion and it will be remembered for a long time. I question the mans sanity aswell, but because there are still so much investigation the autorities are very carefull with what to say and what not to say. All they said was that he didn't have a criminal record or a past of mental instability. I don't see how something sane could do this, the images are horrendous.

I am sad to know this and my thoughts go to those whose loved ones lost their lives in this incident. As the attack was carried out by one person I don't think it can be organized terrorism, I think the man must have had a personal reason to want to harm the royal family on this special day. I hope the other people who were injured will recover. The legal process will deal with the man who is responsible for this terrible crime.

This is indeed terribly sad. I don't think this is organized terrorism either. This year our queen mother would have turned 100 (or something similar like that, I didn't quite catch it) they say the motive of this man might have something to do with this aswell. I am curious to know what this mans motive can be, what he thinks is important enough to risk so many innocent lives. Thank you for your response.
