Have you ever been locked out of your own house?

I have been - twice. The first time i had forgotten to take the key with me - which i later found was lost. My entire family was out and the gardner had to break open the lock - somehow, i didn't feel the 7-lever lock was very strong anymore. No wonder there are burglaries happening everywhere. The second time was during an exam and i didn't know the maid had the the evening off and didn't take the key with me. That time after a long wait, someone got hold of the maid's copy of the key - didn't have to break the lock; but i was this close to doing it. It's kind of becoming a habit to somehow leave the key behind. I hope in future these occurrences are less. Have you ever been locked out of your own house?

Hello cambiste, Yes, recently... all the three of us - me, my husband and my two and a half years old son were locked out side our home. I was busy cooking when my husband called me to fetch him from the train terminal. In a rush, I switched off everything and took my son. I went to my sister's house nearby to leave my house keys; just in case if I forgot to switch off something in the house! When we came home, my sister wasn't at her home. She was in a rush to fetch my brother whose motorbike was out of petrol! I have her house's keys but it was in my house! So, all three of us sat in front of the door of my house, waiting for her to come back!

That was quiet the coincidence. I hope the wait wasn't long, though by the sound of it, it would have taken some time for your sister to help your brother out. Thanks for the good share.

I have had lock outs and sometimes it can be "terrible". I must say that I do not like to carry keys with me so I have to depend on who is at home to allow me in. Sometimes my husband sleeps hard /deep and so it can be a long time before he respond. I will just share this experience with you. I went out and came home late and I had to honk on my car horn so that he could wake up and come down stair and open the door. During this period a number of ideas came to me. Some are: Why isn't he awaitng for me? I would and I practise this so why he is not doing this for me? Does he care about my safety? ... Usually he comes and apologise for not hearing.

Thanks for sharing. I suppose he is being lazy or is tired. My sister does this sometimes, but the maid is around most of the time, so its fine. Sometimes this happens when the maid is doing the laundry as well. I would have to call up the residence phone to get her attention as the doorbell is not very loud. Fortunately, the phones ring loudly lol.

Hello cambisite. There were a few times when I locked myself outside because I forgot to take my key with me while coming out. But I was lucky as I have left another key with my best friend. That is why I don't have to worry about it when locked outside my own apartment. My best friend is one I can truly trust, so there is no problem for me to leave my key with his family. Good day.

I have had that happen a lot! I now keep the house key on a separate ring that I keep in the car. The funniest thing that happened was during my Work Comp suit. I had to have testing done in a place over 200 miles from my home. The company I was suing put me up in this motel that dated from the 1920's. Well my Mom and I got to the motel, checked in and went to our room. The first thing Mom did was go to the bathroom. She went inside, shut the door and did her thing. The next thing I knew there was this knocking at the bathroom door...Mom had managed to lock herself in! Of course I laughed like a hyena! I got the manager and he managed to get her out. She was furious!!! Well a few hours later I needed to go to the bathroom, went in and was very careful NOT to shut the door tight. Mom needed to go out to the car for something, opened the door to the room and the bathroom door slammed shut....I WAS STUCK!!! Mom came back in, I knocked on the bathroom door and Mom answered the door to the room. No one was there, so she shut the door and went back and sat down. I knocked again and she went and answered the door to the room...and again no one was there. (By then I was laughing so hard I couldn't talk!!!) Finally I knocked one more time, and Mom realized that I was stuck in the bathroom and came and helped get me out. We both had a really good laugh over the bathroom door!

Take care not to be locked is important, especially when you are staying alone, or you have a little baby in the room. I have such cases too. Once when my husband was on business trip, I locked my key in the room. The other case is even more frightening, as my grandson was locked in the room. I have to turn to the locksmith for help. Since then, I have a set of spare keys for contingency purposes.

One time I had to break a window to get in because I had left a pot of stew on the stove and I forgot my keys. It was terrible, I could see my keys on the table just inside the door. It turned out the stove was off and I was terribly embarrassed to have to tell my Hubby, you can imagine.

i got locked out, but not for long, you see all locks has its weakness, back in the days when my grandpa built this house he put on each lock and knew of each weakness, and as time passed on he only thought my father, my brother and i about opening these locks without the keys, so its not too hard getting in for me, but if the police are passing while im opening it without the key, then im in trouble if nobody else is home, but the hardest thing to do if im totally locked out, is climbing over the gate, wow its high

Once my mom and I locked outside... I was reading a book when my mom called me in the garden "come out to walk with me" we went out together and no one remembered to take the key.. when we came back, we found both of us was thinking that "she must take the keys" at that time, my dad was on a business trip... we had to wait for someone helping us to open the door... and complained with each other = = that was a stupid memory... and after opening the door, you should show them your ID card... since then, wherever we go we all kept the keys in the pocket..

I used to ALWAYS lock myself out of the house. I found that even with a brand new lock I could usually get in. Now we have better locks and we put one of the keypad code things on our garage door, so in the unfortunate event that I lose my key, I just enter the code and can get in that way! It's great and not very expensive. You should check it out. It's a lifesaver!

I have once been locked outside my house, but I have some neighbours I trust, and gave them a key. So anyway: I was locked outside my house, and waited there for a few hours and my neighbours came back home, asked them for the key and voilĂ , I was back in my own house without breaking anything! Some other idea is to leave a key of your house at some places like your work.

3 times...lol. The first time, the door closed while I was picking up my son from a neighbours and the second time, I had a key in the lock while I was trying to open the door with my key on the outside. Both times, luckily for me, I had left one of the balcony doors open (we stay on the 6th floor of an apartment complex and it's safe to do that during the day time) and we had a guy climb down from the apartment above ours and open the door from inside. The third time, my purse was stolen..and my key was in it. After this incident, we got the lock changed with a lock with the handl. No accidents have happened since then.

That sounds awful. I hope there was nothing else that was valuable to you in the stolen purse. But its good to hear that pece is restored. Here too, there have been less of those incidents. I have attached a large and colourful keychain to the house key, and havn't been able to forget about it since. Thanks for the share.

Yes i have been locked out my own house. My mom used to pick me up from school and there used to be no house keys.My neighbors used to keep me in their house.Sometimes we never lock our house a go as it is difficult to open with the key.So we just lock it lightly and go.When we come back we push the door to open it.Now whenever we go out shopping we first see if we have the key then we go out shopping.

I think you must be very alert in the area where you stay.I can't stay safe because we don't entertain strangers often.

I hope in future these things would not happen at all! LOL! For me, I had face this situation only once. It was a door which has two keys but if you lock the door from outside even without keys, it will be locked and you have to use a key to open that door. Accidently, I left my keys inside that room and closed the door! The door got locked up. Now, what! Unfortunately, second key was lost and it was the dya when I needed to home that night(I was at my uncle's house for his son's marriage). I had to come back otherwise I could loose my job. Hence we broke the lock to get my tickets and other stuffs and get back to my place!

We have given a key to one of our neighbours. We also have their house key. Not only do we take care of their cats when they are away, their teenage boy keeps forgetting his key and has to come and get it from us. We've also hidden one outside as well.

Yeah, giving it to our neighbours is the best thing to do. Our tenants often drop their key at our house when they leave. Thanks for replying.

This got me laughing. I could so relate to it. Yeah, I have experienced getting locked out of the house. I never forget my house keys, but there are times when my mom gets a little pissed because I am home really late practically every night. She does not like it and to punish me, she sometimes locks the door from inside. I once slept inside our car, woke up early a few hours after that to wake up our maid to open the door for me. It's hilarious. I still come home late, but I try my best to lay low a bit. Instead of coming home late every night, I've been pretty successful doing it max of 3 times in a week. :)

Atleast you didn't forget the car keys. If i could drive, i would have locked myself out of the car as well. Coming home late makes your people worried. No wonder your mom gets mad. But we have the right to see the night sky too. Great solution and thanks for your time.

I always tell my mom to take it easy on me because she was also young once + it's not like she does not know where I am and who I'm with. Sometimes, I really think that she over-reacts and worries way too much. Moms :D

Yes many especially when time is really late in my work , acting too fast that afraid to be late but still it will be late longer because forgot the key in the room. Angry to feel that time is also distracting that you try to be fast in order not to be late. I climb the on the gate so with the grills and do anything to open the room . I was so forgetable now a days, I dont know what happen in my mind.
