Saving up for

Can you remember the first thing that you saved up to purchase? How old were you? What was it? What color was it? How long did you anticipate having it before you were able to? Were you satisfied with it after you owned it? The first thing I can remember really saving up for was a CB jacket. It was a raspberry pink with navy blue trim, pullover style with a zipper that only came from the neck to the sternum. I was 15. I was making $1 an hour baby sitting for neighbors from time to time... my mother knew how much I had wanted one but it was really too much of a luxery for our family - she told me if I want it really bad that I must save up for half of it and she would pay the other half. IT took a long time but I wore that jacket for years and later my mother took it as her own... so we really got our money's worth. The next thing was a pair of leather fashion boots from "The Wild Thing" at the mall. they were $65 and I was 16 years old. They were so comfortable. The foot part was hard leather while the upper part was brushed suede all in a camel tan. The collar would fold down for a slouch look or could be pulled up for a country boot. I would say that they were well worth the cost because I still have them today more than 25 years later!

um.. i think it was mainly for records when i was really little. $5.98 may not seem like much, but to me it was a king's ransom then(1976). back when a soda was a quarter

I can vividly recall in 1974 my father coming back from a soda machine all miffed because they cost 25cents now! I remember saying, "They'll probably be 50cents by the time II grow up" K-Tel records! I loved when they went on sale for 1.99 to 3.98 and I only had to save a couple weeks of 75cent.

The first thing I saved up for was a second hand bicycle. My mother had me take part of my allowance to the Post Office bank. I was eleven at the time, and when I had saved enough we went to the bank, withdrew the money and then went to a second hand bicycle shop where we got a woman's CM bicycle. I was so excited that I got on it and rode around the block. It was also the first time I ever had a bicycle and I had it up until I was 14.

The first thing I saved up for was a pair of shoes.....I only ever wore used shoes as I had an older sister and I had to wear her hand me downs.....so one day I wanted a new pair of shoes and my mom said....Carole needs them worse and that was the beginning for me. I started babysitting etc.....and by seventh grade had my own checking account and was buying material to make all my own clothes....and actually it taught me so much about money. Learning to save is a hard lesson to learn....but I really learned how to budget too from it...I would save up a bunch. Put it in my account and it had to last me a while....so I learned how to be frugal yet I always had what I wanted....and I did it on my own!

I honestly can't say I remember saving my money for anything particular. I am an impulse shopper. If I see something I like and I have the money I buy it and if I don't have the money I either go back and get it when I do or its just not that important to me. Most of the time if I see something I really want I'll just return to the store when I can.

that is the way I have become in my adulthood. I need to retrain myself for the anticipation and saving.

I don't know for sure, but I think I first saved up to buy a video game console. I was in the 7th grade and my mother said that she would get me one only if I scored good marks and saved up for it. So that year I worked hard to get scores and saved up about 2/3 of the money for the console. When the results came, we went and bought one straight. It was a gray colored console and costed about $15. Oh how I had fun with that. Although not working, it still is there with all my old stuff and I have kept it just like hat without disposing it off. bourne

aw, sentimental :) what brand of console was it? my first one was an odyssey back in the early 70s, then came the Atari in the early 80s. I still prefer those types of games.

I remember the very first thing that I saved for was one of them cameras that you could have the picture right then without sending it off. Back then that was something big, you couldn't just take a picture and then put it on the computer. I worked at a drive trough as what they called a car hope back then. If you don't know what I'm talking about, I was delivering peoples food to then in their cars. anyway I was working for 50 cents plus tips so it took a long time to get this. I was around 16 also at the time.
