Here is a description of how to make a dual-boot installation. Whether you can do this depends on your available hard disk space: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/install-windows-xp-on-your-pre-installed-windows-vista-computer/
If you want to make a completely new installation (and delete Vista), you should be able to do it from the XP Installation disc (which you will need in any case). When you insert the disc in the CD drive and boot from it, you should see the option to reformat the partition and make a clean install.

i gave my vista back what a pain it was ,i now have my 6 year old xp again. from what i understand you can purchase a program for a few hundred bucks to swap over. check with a small pc shop and see what they charge. i cannot find any pc without vista, i use a laptop and someone told me dell has a xp online ive never checked it out but you can.

if you are having dell laptop they are giving you facility to downgrade your OS by simply call or something..
For HP,Sony and other laptops first restart the laptop press 'Del' or 'F8' key for entering a BIOS (don't go to BIOS if you are not familier with computers) then go to SATA cable setting.. disable SATA cable.. now insert the XP installation CD and then it will detect your hard drive.. format your base drive and install XP in it.
make sure you have taken backup of your all data. :)
