With all this new stuff about Gitmo and torture, I wonder one thing...

With all the drugs we have at our disposal, why not give those guys sodium pentathol or another "truth serum"? Why the need to physically make them suffer? I have no sympathies for terrorists but I do think we're at the point in civilization where we should be above physical coercion if we need to get information from someone. So why did we need torture when we had all kinds of drugs that could get at the truth?

Hiya dragon54 Yes, you are right, how can we ever think that we are in the right if we are guilty of the same sort of behaviour as they are.

That thought crossed my mind, too. But I heard that thousands of lives were saved through some of the information they got. I just wish they could have obtained it more humanely, although I have no compassion for terrorists.

First of all I do not think what we were doing was torture. If you read international treaties and agreements you will see that torture is defined in some as permanent physical damage to a person. Most allow for a country to set the bounds of integrations of EXCEPT FOR POW OF COUNTRIES THAT SIGNED THE TREATY OR CONVENTION. Since terrorist do not represent a country they fall inot the same category as a spy and there are no rules.

That makes sense, so why are they letting the left dictate their policies? I don't know, either. This country is going to hell in a handbasket. I do hope we can recover.

Unfortunately there are certain types of people who delight in torture and causing pain. It makes them feel powerful. They are attracted to jobs that let them exercise this desire and get to be cruel and powerful.

And on the other hand, many of the people involved in the water boarding and such still have nightmares about it. I feel sorry for them. With all our technology there should be a way of getting information from those that don't want to give it, accurately and painlessly and quickly.

There was a lot of talk about using truth serums shortly after 9-11. The biggest issue is that it is considered torture under the Geneva convention. Technically terrorists are not protected under the Geneva convention, but everyone on the left wants them to be covered not only by that, but by the US constitution as citizens it seems. You should also keep in mind that what truth serums do is dumb the brain down making it difficult to conjure a lie. That is by no means a sure thing and while they may work to some degree, they are generally considered unreliable.
Here's a good article that discusses truth serums.

I agree. I don't know why they are screaming about the Geneva Convention when we are not dealing with enemy combatants. However, I don't believe anyone should be tortured or physically coerced if there are other methods available.
