Focus is what true masters have adroitly developed and are able to apply effortlessly anytime. As a serious student, do you want to have the kind of sharp focus Oriental martial arts masters of old had? Here are some easy steps:1. First and foremost, live a simple life and adhere to rigid simplicity principles. To further discuss this in detail, continue with the tips below.
2. Never clutter your mind with garbage. Oriental martial arts masters of old were known for having a propensity for quiet environments. Find time to have prolonged retreats in quiet surroundings by yourself. Better if the place is forested with as little man-made features as possible.
3. Lessen your time for listening to loud music, especially with the use of head or ear phones that reduce the hearing ability and empowers feeding of mental garbage in your mind. You may go back to full-time loud music during vacations or semestral breaks. But not when you're deep in study.
4. Take deep breaths every 30 minutes. Correct deep breathing is expanding the belly when inhaling and contracting the same when exhaling. Each 30 minutes, stop studying a while and do 4 to 5 cycles of deep breathing. If you can do more cycles, why not? This refreshes oxygen supply to the brain and to the circulatory systems of the body. Remember that the cell's main food is oxygen.
5. Lessen watching TV or DVDs.
6. Have a soft background of violin or flute music.
7. Before doing anything in the morning, stand and stare at a small detail in a plant: a stem, a leaf, flower, or fruit. Keep still while focusing on it. Think only of the thing you are staring on. And relax. DO this for 15 to 30 minutes each day.
8. Give your eyes a break each hour or two. Stop and drop everything and then stare at a small detail in the distance. The farther out, the better. Try to think of nothing else except that thing in the distance.
9. Stop drinking intoxicating drinks and stop smoking. These stuffs reduce our brain's power to focus.
10. Get rid of anything unimportant in your mind. Here's a tip: If you were to die today, what things would you spend time thinking about? Those are the things worthy of occupying your mind daily. To me, that would be God, God, and God. After all, He advocates deep meditation in His Word.

Wow Lcook! Awesome post! Thanks forsahring. Although I am not a student in "school" I am a constant student of the Word and in life. I think to be a good teacher, one must first be a good student/learner.
I appreciate your list of how to achieve greater focus in you life. I will try to apply some of these in my daily life.

Hahaha. I do dayly chi gong and meditation practices. I have been doing this type of trainging every day for over a year. Their is benifit to such things and nothing in your post is wrong. However it is incomplete, to gain anytype of mastery over the mind requires constant policing of your thoughts and an awareness what your thoughts do to yourself and others. I have found that the best program to teach you to control not only your mind but also your body is the inner circle at http://www.chipowerinnercircle.com
